  • 1:54 : WOW, im sure this is the only sentence Diana would have on earth if she had a second chance : "Complete these dear unfinished tasks of mine"

  • Lynne dawson has the most wonderful voice.

  • Lynne dawson has the most wonderful voice.

  • Lynne Dawson made me cry when she sang the requiem all those years ago and sends a shiver well almost as i hear it each time, but she should be commended for her singing, well done lynne.

  • Dramatic interpretation of Verdi Requiem, the mistery if death seem here most profound and terrific.......... R.I.P.

  • io penso che la lingua latina ,lingua che per secoli ha rappresentato la lingua del mondo e poi è deceduta ,rappresenti al meglio la caducità del nostro essere.Diana requiem rescant in pace

  • Lynne Dawson has the most beautiful voice that i have ever heard.Jordan

  • What gives you that idea marcio 1216?

I'm a Freemason and there's nothing Masonic about it. I wish the Masonic choir could sing so beautifully.

  • this is not a catholic ritual cerimony, this a maçonic ritual cerimony.

  • Anglican, dude.

  • Wow, they're singing a Bathory song.

  • Stunning voice. Simply stunning. I remember watching it on the Box and it gave me goosebumps. It still does.

  • No one knew who this woman was before this funeral. And suddenly, a billiion people are watching and listening to her sing this incredible piece of music. Lynne Dawson represents what is best about the English musical tradition.

  • Land mine awareness.

  • Christopher Philippe :you are 100% right. I didnt know this lady b4 the funeral and was HIT by this performance at the funeral. REST IN PEACE MY BEAUTIFUL ANGEL DIANA I LOVE YOU FOREVER

  • God bless the Brits, good Catholics save for the shennanigans of Harry 8,

  • I think she sings beautiful... really does.

  • Lynne's high note is the scream of horror that the whole country felt that terrible morning when we woke up to the news. The same feeling that we all had when we watched the second plane live on 9/11.

  • Very impresive this take 0:24 Diana Requiescat in Pace

  • this hymn has me soo sad....she had it sung at her wedding...:(

  • hazel. Which hymn? I don't remember them singing Libera Me at the wedding. It is for funerals.

  • First of all, Lady Sarah: What a prim and propper British lady! Secondly, Lynn sings as if she was elevating Diana's Soul to our Father. Both powerful voice and controlled at the extreme. And last, but not least, I am a Catholic, but not even at Vatican ceremonies we see such well arranged ceremonies and chorus. The British are the best for solemn ceremonies. Congratulations from Argentina.

  • Yes, in Britain they do it better than anywhere else in the world. I agree with you very much.

  • Swaingles, I don't agree, in the Vatican there are beautiful ceremonies!!!! 100 times nicer than this, in itself this is a funeral so we respect it as a very very solemn occasion, but come one I was once presentg for a mass of Pentecost and there where 3 choirs singing, a major one which sang the main parts a second one which sang the responses and a third accompanied both choirs whence needed, I think you would trust that the Pope has the best service people :) lol

  • Priest. You have to admit that Lynne sang "out of the box" for this one. I have never heard a more heartfelt rendering of this great piece. It was as if she had been "assisted from above".

  • What is the name of the man doing the voice over, he has such a reassuring timbre.

I wonder if he has done any talking books.

  • It is the Scottish Actor, Tom Fleming. The only TV work is to provide the narration of state occasions for the BBC. I'm sure he's done audio books, you should google him.

  • did u no that lynne is my auntie

    shes the best!

wen i was younger id go round hers and we'd compare voices

i scream at her and she would sing amazingly!!

  • Dawson's "Verdi Requiem" piece still gives me the chills...

  • I saw her funeral on television and it was sad, but she was a wonderful person with a beautiful soul. RIP Princess Diana.

    Carina X

  • There are very few people who could have done this. If you notice, I think that Lynne is actually crying during her performance. It is as if she has transcended for a moment and become almost superatural. I doubt she or anyone else could repeat what she did here. It was certainly the most genuine and natural part of the entire funeral service.

  • A fitting tribute by far the most beautiful thing I have ever heard

  • Why are you even discussing Susan Boyle???? This is Dianas funeral, not Britains got talent!!!

  • Lyn Dawson beautiful as ever, wonderfully done one of the most talented british singers

  • Enough about Susan Boyle! This is about sacred choral music, not contemporary pop. It's heinous to compare the two.

  • Lynn Dawson and Susan Boyle are in different galaxies as far as artistic talent and training are concerned. I don't say this to belittle Miss Boyle in any way, as she has her own niche in the genre of music she performs. The comparsion is equally unfair to both of them. I agree that Britain is fortunate to have them both.

  • I like Susan Boyle but, I'm sorry, you just cannot compare Susan to Lynn. I think Susan has a beautiful voice but there is no way on Earth she could handle Verdi and especially not this well.

  • I don't think SuBo has the requisite grasp of Latin you'd need to have in order to professionally attempt this.

  • I dont know that she has the range either. I think she did well on I Dreamed a Dream because it was in a lower register. Her tone in Memory wasn't nearly as good and you could tell she was straining to hit a lot of those notes. Plus Lynn's voice is just fuller and more capable of handling a piece like this.

  • nor does she have the voice.

  • No one will remember Boyle in 5 years.

  • i will and millions of others will for the rest of their lives

  • Her popularity is based on pitty votes for her looks not for her talent (ALOT of people can sing better than her). Its about as superficial as you can get and nothing that superficial lasts long.

  • One could not begin to compare Lynn Dawson and Susan Boyle. There is such a huge difference in their experience, training and vocal style. However, they both have the ability to move the listener with their wonderful instrument. Britain is fortunate to have them both!

  • The way Lynne Dawson sings reduces me to tears. I've never heard anything like it before. Beautiful singing.

  • Better than Susan Boyle?

  • no.

  • What a performance by Lynne! She reminds me so much of Barbara Bonney, who I also love. Lynne just couldn't have done this better. It was just as if Diana's spirit was singing through her. It is one of the most memorable singing performances in my lifetime.

  • This is beautiful. Appropriate considering the beautiful person's funeral at which it was being performed. God Bless you, Diana. You are still missed 12 years after you've left us.

  • Interesting that they skipped the first half of the Libera Me fugue (pp. 187-200 in my Schirmer vocal score) to go directly to the coda or stretta part where the fugal entrances are 1 measure apart instead of 8 meas. apart for the beginning of the fugue. I would have enjoyed this lovely soprano singing the whole thing.

  • One of the music piece verdi did was Dies Irae, which is one of my favorite pieces by him

  • Verdi's reqiem is always comforting.

  • Watching this is what introduced my to the voice that is Lynne Dawson. Simply amazing. Melts my bones every time I hear her voice ♪

  • She wasn't perfect, but she did her best and helped a lot of people.

  • Jamaica's national song is of this same rhythm they were singing

  • Yep,I get stoned to this piece!!!!

  • I think the Organist who played on this day deserves such a huge well done, from what I hear the playing was faultless and wow what pressure what with tens of millions of people watching the world over..well done to you.

  • Well, actually it's oft cited that over 2 billion people watched the funeral: so just over one third of the world's population in 1997!

  • then thats even more impressive! it just goes to show how the world felt about Diana

  • yes, agree completely.

    everyone did their bit flawlessly.

in a weird way it was an amazing moment for britain.

i think the whole world was mourning and what was done in london helped us very much.

  • On the Brits can ever hope to put on something as grand as this - the rest of the world must simply 'look and learn'. Lyn Dawson was sublime and that ancient great pipe organ and choir singing 'I Vow To Thee My Country' was spine chilling. It was a fitting tribute to a Princess. As the camera pans upwards and away from the coffin during the Hymn, it was as though her soul was making the ascension to Heaven at that very moment in time. I hope her tormented soul has found her peace.

  • What a Beautiful Soprano.Lynnes voice is the finest i,ve ever known it.Lovely.

  • she was a lovely lady and truly human!

  • (Jsy91), sorry, you are inocence

  • Alexmeister25! Judging from your grammar you are not from this country. . So how about you dont pass such horrible, unjust judgments upon "old Queen" No such orders were given by HM to kill diana. . she died in a traggic car crash! An event which shook this country deeply! Comments like yours are why people around the world are intollerant to other cultures! You leave ours and we'll leave yours!! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!

  • Sweetthang9, you are an IDIOT !

  • Lynne's performance touched me so much that i had a tattoo done depicting some lyrics. Just so deeply touching

  • I did the same thing. I have "Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine'" on my arm!

  • Pricess Diana for me is eternal women, but the old queen is problematic for life of Diana, and for me the queen is a killer of diana, y see meny books and studind tha life of Diana and merried Layd Diana and prince Charles is a politic show in the wold, and the old queen ever don´t like Pricess Diana, and the acident of Diana and alfayet in street is a mistery for me. Sorry, but the old queen, now is died, never hat a good head and heart, steine hertz, but Diana for is eternal angel.

  • oh, shut up. people have accidents all the time. being a public figure doesn't rule out probability.

  • Don't listen to anything Dodi's father says about Princess Diana's death. He's just making things up to cover up the fact that, in a way, he was partly responsible for it. And he's mad because his son's dead. It was an accident, nobody knew it would happen or planned for it to happen. If there's anyone who deserves the blame it's the intoxicated driver and the paparazzi. Not the Queen at all. Oh and somebody made a comment on your grammer, yes it is terrible. I'm not British and I'm saying that.

  • hey well said all true

  • What is the name of the first hymn?

  • Look at the description or Part 14.

  • The first hymn was used in Holst's Jupiter from his "The Planets." Absolutely beatiful.

  • why do people make funerals? it's not for the dead is it? because if they r already dead they cant see the funeral...

  • That is an awful thing to say br34 - have a heart! That lady was incredibly special to her nation and all of the British Commonwealth

  • it is for people to say their goodbyes and to show their respect for that person

  • That is an insensitive thing to say br34 - Princess Dianna was an icon to Great Britain and to countries of the British Commenwealth - you are from Brazil - with respect, you cannot understand.

  • You are insensitive br34 - you are not from Britain or Her Coomonwealth - you cannot understand

  • even though i kinda agree with you, even though for a different reason, its really insensitive what you said. It's obvious that people will get mad at you when you say something like funerals are unnessecary

but like i said, i actually agree with you, but i think funerals are unnessecary because i don't think the dead loved ones would want the still living to be sad, but to continue living a good HAPPY life, even without them.

This is at least what i would want when i die.

  • I can see having a funeral with music, eulogies and things to honor them, but the viewing part has always been a little barbaric to me. It is a closure thing I guess. I like to remember people as they used to look.

  • Only the Brits can put on something as grand as this

  • This performance is perfect. She is simply divine.

  • What a voice!!!!! God blessed her with such gift!

  • MAGNIFICO!!!

  • I prefer Lynne to Renee Flemming singing this!

  • You as an I think Brit? Comparing to me...a Fin born in Sweden have such wonderful voices in your country that I´ve never known...So as for your answer..Lynne has her wonderful voice making her a voice of the world! But I must say also Renee although my scepticism have a voice that truely touches my soul and spirit!

  • As said....I think that I prefer Lynne to Renee...but however..this contribute that Verdi has done is "enough" despite our voices of today...:-)

We all have those voices inside of us...lets just bring them upon the surface and make them ours!!

  • singinciaran. I agree. Renee couldn't never approach this - no in a million years. This recording is one of the most shattering experiences for me that I have ever heard from any singer. I was at the performance at the proms when this was sung and Diana was there. I remember they played a strange slow version of "God Save the Queen". The singer was Michelle Crider.

  • From the first time when I heard this performed by Lynne Dawson, as I took part of the funeral as so many with me when Princess Diana was brought to her everlasting rest...however I was so overwhelmed and touched by this Requiem. Never, ever heard about it and never ever heard it sung it so beautifully since then! So, thank´s Lynne for having such a great voice, and such an ability to touch one´s life without knowing it!:-)

    Kisses and hugs!:-)

  • This part of the libera me is sung beautifully

  • wow the soprano soloist is amazing! how have i never heard of her? what's her name?

  • Her name is Lynne Dawson. The performers are from the BBC Singers.

  • What an honor for that woman to be chosen to sing the Requiem for this funeral. What a great job she did too. Thanks for the post.

  • I had this wonderful dream last night... Princesse Diana told me to keep my faith strong for a brighter future...

God, I am glued to all her videoes on youtube for hours...

    lots of love,

    Ms. Ben Hope

  • You're so lucky. I think that's a very message we really need right now...

  • This music is piercingly beautiful. Thanks.

  • I remember having gotten up at like 4:00 a.m. to watch the whole thing on tv. Unbelievable!! Thanks for posting this.

  • Gosh Lynee' voice is staggering. Cannot stop listening to her emotion.

  • a royal funeral befitting a royal lady queen of our hearts.

  • I wish they would put this to DVD. I would buy it and many probably would! The money raised could go to a charity she supported. I have a VHS copy from 97' but not sure of the quality will have to check it.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It is the most beautiful rendition of the few I have heard, and yes, the emotion of her performance biased my opinion and judgment, but there you are... Slainte'.

  • An excellent example of British skill.

    Still makes my eyes water.

  • Did he say 'The BBC singer Lyn Dawson', well she is truely amazing and sings with the most earthy feeling I've ever heard!

  • The whole day was sullied for me because Tom Cruise was there. Keeping an eye out for aliens probably.

  • That singer, she's amazing!!

  • I would rather like thoce guys to sing Verdi's Requiem at my funeral. Does anyone have their number?

  • She didn't destroy the royal family, she gave them a reality check. She woke them up from their stiff upper lip attitudes. Look at them now, having a reality TV programme about them and now more approachable to people. They understood that Diana was right from the beginning, unfortunately it took her death for them to realise that. If charles only treated her right, she would have been an amazing Queen one day.

  • Damage the Royalty, HUH the Royalty damaged themselves by being tight and anal. Diana, dead but will live in the hearts of all forevermore,,, I Bot a Gay, you are so just as your name applies.LOL

  • Both Holst and Verdi in the same video.

    Wow.

    Heart stopping.

Dies Irae and "I vow to thee" from Jupiter.

    My heart stopped.

  • Hearing this must surely cause one to thank God for the ability to hear at all. It is sublime.

  • There is no "God".

  • of course theres not, pshhhh, silly hopeful

  • just for clarification tho, this hymn was created from the Jupiter theme. Def one of the most beautiful tunes ever!

  • yes it's in the holst. the song is beautiful!

  • Isn't this theme used in Jupiter?

  • I can feel the emotion in this Aieu to the Princess Diana. All the world can feel sorry for her soul.

  • I've been recently listening to various artists' recordings of this, and I can hear much more emotion in the voices here at Diana's funeral> therefore I find this far more moving because the singers were actually I believe for the most part sincerely singing for Diana, as they were personally mourning her passing.

  • why do people love princess diana so much is because she was very nice

  • I've got a question... Why British people love Diana?

  • Personally, I'm not sure. She tried to damage the Monarchy, something which as a loyal subject I find truly indefensible.

Yes it was sad that a woman who was a great charity worker and celebrity died - but unlike when true members of the Royal family have died I wasn't any more upset by her passing than when some of my favourite celebrities have passed away.

  • the hymn is very fitting of Diana.

"and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace."

    RIP HRH Princess Diana

  • this makes me cry everytime. overwhelming beyond words

  • The way her soprano voice goes up at 5:06-5:12 is just exquisite singing voice, so pure and clear like a bell!

  • Beautiful. Another woman sang at Diana's funeral, anyone remember who or what song that was?

  • If you look at the other clips of the service, you might find just well find out!

  • The power of emotion that Lynn gives this around 7:13 is just about everything any woman could give.

  • truly powerful rendition that still gives me goose bumps

  • 00:07 The vertical zooming away from the Diana's coffin as 'I Vow to Thee My Country' is played, is one of the most intense and emotional images of the 20th century.

  • Oh, you're so poetic. /facepalm

  • /b is thatta way.

  • Yes, quite.

  • The finest Soprano i,ve heard,singing Verdi,s Requiem.Fantastic voice.Love it

  • wow...still moves me to tears..

  • We love you. Thanks for careing. RIP

  • There are some parts that remind me of Holst's 'Jupiter' from 'The Planets.'

  • that's becausee the tune to "I Vow to Thee My Country" is in Jupiter.

  • actually, the theme is originally from jupiter

  • thats becuz the beginning is....holst's jupiter....

"i vow to thee, my country" took that melody from holst =)

  • Tribecatom, I respect your last comment but truth be know no one here has a right to opinion on something that clearly is the unknown.

  • I read in the inquest transcripts the other week Mohammed Fayed was accused of being a liar and fantacist during an investigation into his take over of House of Fraser in the 1980s. I think the same criticism should have been bluntly levelled against him in respect of Diana. I think we already know what happened and it is far from "something that clearly is unknown" as you say. Check out the Operation Paget Report and the inquest website.

  • Mognolia. You are right. Diana loved this this requiem. I attended the Proms when they had Verdi's Requiem. Diana was there too. I think it is the only Proms she attended.

I had never heard of Lynn Dawson before this. The perfomance she made at Diana's funeral and shown in this video was absolutely phenomenal. It tore my heart out when I heard it. I am sure that Lynn put a special amount of emotion into her singing for this special occasion.

  • Yes...stunning performance from Lynn Dawson. Unforgettable.

  • Diana loved Verdi's Requiem very much. Rest in peace, our Princess!

  • Lynn Dawson is a stupendous soprano. I will never forget that Verdi excerpt from watching the funeral live.

  • That excerpt from Verdi's Requiem is my all time favorite operetic pieces. So beautiful and yet so haunting. I'm speechless

  • The many conspiracy theories are being put about my mainly just one man: Mohammed Fayed. He has an agenda to deflect attention away from the real cause of the crash which was systemic failings in his corporation's security operation and the drinking habit of one of his most trusted employees.

His persistent making of allegations which have no foundation in reality and in some instances are plainly absurd, such as trying to get a Fiat Uno to make a 2 ton Mercedes crash in a pre-meditated way.

  • No "requiemaura" you have got it all wrong, YOU ARE THE EMBARRASSMENT, with all your verbal crap, stop reading the SUN & the STAR newspapapers.

  • lol the royal family had her killed you morons

because if she had a kid with an "outsider" that guy she was seeing it will cause embarressment to the bloodline.

  • This was so sad. It was befitting a great princess though. I will always love Diana AND England.

She was a great person and England is a GREAT NATION.

  • Ironic you should say that about the Princess of a Celtic country (i.e. not England)

  • Well, great music, very inspiring. Not fitting for her though, I mean, there have been far greater, far less promiscuous princesses in this great nation's history. If she looked anything like Camilla the response would be far less sympathetic I can assure you.

  • it was a royal accident... she was divine, the music is divine, her sons are devine...

  • God Save her in HIs Great Kingdom! Poor princess, I'll always Pray for her, and I'm Spanish, but I Want to be English, and I'm going to be it. God Save the royal family

  • I don't know why I am watching this, depressing

  • You cannot say they did kill her or didnt! You have to accept many things you do not understand. It works both ways really. People who say she died from an accident cannot prove that. So either way it does not matter. Yu will never know the truth.

This is the most moving piece ever sung and truly the best.

  • It was proven to be an accident.

  • The fact that there are many many conspiracy theories going around, and many investigations STILL says to me it was never 'proven', merely assumed

  • Strange. Started off by Holst - I Vow to Thee my Country

  • Not strange really. If you look at the previous part you'll see the first verse and the words in the description. The Requiem starts at only just over 2 minutes into the video.

  • Why did they kill her she did them no wrong ,we all believe they kill her.she was a lady of our hearts, they keep telling lies on her,.you will be always in our hearts forever Queen of our hearts...Love you and miss you so much our lady....

  • She wasn't killed, it undeniably was an accident.

  • Thank you, For someone from Ireland, That is much respected, Maybe Diana could of brought much closer together.

  • That section of the Requiem is so moving and appropriate :-(

  • dis makes you proud to be british. Princess di R.I.P YOU WILL BE FOREVER MISSED BY ALL

  • Why is it that only the ordinary folk cried @ the funeral? none of the celebs did!

  • I'm a grown man sitting here crying 10 years later. I'm almost embarassed to admit it, but that's what Diana did to us- you couldn't help but love her.

  • Please don't be embarassed. I am the same as you and I'll never stop grieving. This was such a tragedy as she had so much good in her. God bless

  • Thank you for posting this. It brings back my memories of Her Highness Princess Diana and her short time on this Earth. I know I'll never forget her.

  • Ten years nearly to the day - the combination of 'I vow to thee my country' and Verdi's Libera Me sums up much of the emotion felt in that tragic week. Diana, Princess of Wales, we will never forget.

  • Some people ARE touched by God. Verdi is definitely one of t
