I agree about American remakes of eastern movies being quite shabby. During adaptations I believe directors cut off cultural and social details only existing in eastern countries so as to adapt the film to western viewers but if you cut out the soul of a plot all you have left are pictures, albeit scary. Just pointless scary scenes meshed together in a weird semblance of a plot :|

i don't get why everyone hates the american version! i just saw it and liked it. at least you know why the ghost is angry. in movies like "the ring" you aren't told why the ghost is evil and i hate that!

@starsweet4 actually, if you read the book you'll see that the story's much more developed and the characters have more depth and humanity. As for the movie, isn't obvious? Sadako was ostracized her whole life because her father was a spirit of the sea (a demon if I remember correctly) and because she was had ESP :)

@starsweet4 if you read the books by Suzuki you'd find there's more to the story and characters than what can be shown in a 90min movie. As for the film, isn't it obvious? Imagine being a sea demon's bastard child, exhibiting ESP abilities and being ostracized for it all. Wouldn't you be kind of pissed off with humanity?

Anyway you really can't understand the presence of the well in the video and all it's consequences if you don't read the book, so I suggest you do ;)

Though fantastical at times, the story was told well enough to allow for suspension of disbelief; the magic tricks are fun, but the story really draws the viewer in. It is really nice movie to see on kookíca. So dont wait, come and enjoy it.

@ClaireBluvNikki ...the reference to the 2 girls was more about spirit photography, the plot device of the movie. It is suggested the "flaw" in the photo may be more than just a flaw since both young ladies died under strange circumstances sometime after the photo was taken.

@AlphaDevilbuster "The Ring" Is a lot more visceral than "Ringu". They match plot almost identically, but "Ringu" allows the audience to use their imaginations a bit more. It's all a matter of opinion really, if you prepare visceral horror to the less well known supernatural horror then its your choice. However, people fear what they do not understand.

Ahhum, why do people diss remakes? i mean common, the original ideas are great, cant you think of it as the director/producer might have been inspired and wanted to make an english version? its like books... you read a book you like and want to make it into a film, I really like the remakes.. Obvestly the originals are always better.. but Im glad they made american ones, cause Im fed up with subtittles and mouths not moving at the same time.. soo yeah I wouldnt diss them :)

@bexy222 Oh Bexy, I SO agree, had to reply to this comment and say thank God someone thinks like me! I'm sure the Asian versions are scarier in a way, but I don't like subtitled or dubbed films. I made that comment once and was told people who can't watch foreign films are stupid!??? No, to me they just seem cheap looking, and I'm either reading and not watching, or I'm looking at mouths that don't sync with the dialogue and it's ruining the viewing for me. So good t find someone who agrees! :)

i know this is a remake but for some reason i like horror films of all kinds for some reason. Shutter is definatly not the scariest one i've seen though. the scariest one i've seen is the Strangers and that one from what i know is not a remake. and i don't know why i just now noticed this, but i finally relized that the gut from Fringe is in this.

@newcoolnarutard1 I might agree with you about everything else, but The Grudge. It was remade by the original director, who remade the movie several times before. The final draft (though with American actors) was that: his final draft. Everything before it seemed, while indeed scarry, just incomplete. The best critique for the Grudge would be why didn't he just stick with the Asian actors? The Grudge II, however, now there's a truly unintentionally hilarious film.
