heez a welshman as far as i know...from wales...has written and produced van morrison.
wiki...born in Sale and brought up in altrincham, cheshire, b4 moving to wales, coastal town of solva in pembrokeshire...l8r moved bak to england to attend University of Liverpool...first album big break in 1993......
ah.... London eh? what a crying shame it means other things to others, like black hoodlums running through tube trains and attacking ordinary people. Or ...black "man" stabbing a white youth to death for absolutely no reason. Oh well back to the rosy images created by David and his band through this sound..........
I used to walk through those subways almost every Sunday when I visited my dad back in the early/mid 90's. They were near Royal Oak/Paddington tube stations.
Ever since I saw that subway network in this original video I always think of my dad when this song plays and remember my weekly visits to see him after my mum and dad separated.
I wish I could take one more trip back to that time so I could see see him again.
This guy does not speak in a welsh accent ergo he is not welsh. Without looking it up i'd take a stab at him (not literally) being from near Bristol or even being a move about army kid with an indisguishable accent.
Ive just looked up and interview i'm still non the wiser
Babylon is one of the BEST songs ever written in British music history. I love it so much but in the same time I hate it too because it always puts me down and makes me feel really upset....
No other song I've ever heard expresses the lonely aimless drift that many young men experienced in life. Babylon hits a nerve & somewhat painful to listen to but beautiful & powerful all at the same time. A great song touches your soul. Anything less is just music.
hes not irish or welsh he was born in sale in cheshire then grew up in altringham, then moved to wales when he was in his teens. i live in cheshire around a half an hour drive from sale
I remember when I first heard this song *sniff*, it was on a beautiful sunny afternoon of July... It was my birthday and everything was so beautiful and we were perfectly happy together... but then, what we were doing was considered ''indecent'' and they cut us into pieces like vulgar meat... When I walk under the heavy rain without an umbrella, when my heart cry for you... I remember the good times and I desperatly hope everything will be back like before, some sunny day of May 2013... ;-;
I love this song, I love his voice, I love the lyrics. I feel so many different emotions when I hear this song. Thank you David for being true to you!
@danfloun True, one notable exception was Donal Dineen's "No Disco" programme in Ireland. One night he played a video and said "...and that was from his latest album 'Sell Sell Sell', something which it Didn't Didn't Didn't !".
@danfloun Funny that he RE-released his overlooked material after the success of White Ladder as if to say..It is really good you just haven't heard it. Er...no, it was rubbish you arrogant head wobbling twit!.
never claimed he was Irish. He did however get his big break by being played on Irish TV when no-one else wanted to know anything about him, and he has the biggest ever selling album in Ireland.

Furthermore, his 'big break' was his White Ladder album, everything before that was overlooked by most.

Yup, but Sell Sell Sell was pre White Ladder which is why I mentioned the last part.
Have you got any other old stuff of his by any chance?
danfloun 1 year ago
@danfloun Just the acoustic version of 'Hold On' from the No Disco sessions which you probably seen already.
