YAHOO NEWS -- May 20. 2010 -- Toyota, the world's largest automaker, battered by a series of high-profile safety recalls in recent months, said consumers have complained of steering wheels that came off-center during certain driving maneuvers, out of alignment with the directon of the car's wheels. Toyota received 12 complaints in Japan, but said it knew of no accidents caused by the problem.
YAHOO NEWS -- May 20. 2010 -- The latest issue involves a computerized system that oversees how the steering wheel controls the tires. The steering system comes standard in Japanese models, but is optional in some other regions. It varies the amount that the steering wheel turns the tires on a car, allowing drivers to turn the wheel less at low speeds when attempting to navigate or park in tight spots and providing finer control at high speeds.
Compareing toyota to german giants is not fair. I mean they might match some standards but most lexus cars (and similar brands) cost around three fourth the price. As to all the recall talk going on. Every major manufacturer has had some black mark in ttheir records. In my humble opinion you should let your bank account decide, not reviews or youtube comments made but 12 year olds:)
I am so amazed at all the insensitive assholes here blaming this poor man for being killed by a DEFECTIVE car. The next time someones house burns down due to defective wiring, let's blame the owner. The next time a baby dies from a poorly designed crib, let's blame the mom. The next time someone dies from eating bad food in a restaurant & getting food poisoning, let's blame the diner. The next time a girl gets raped while wearing a short skirt, let's blame the girl. Get the point asswipes? Good.
Let's all hope this car doesn't have the problems other Toyota & Lexus vehicles are having with their electronics, which just a few years ago would have been unheard of in a Toyota. As the head of Toyota just told the US Congress, maybe they grew too fast for their own good.
And let's not forget that poor man and his family who died in a Lexus due to the accelerator malfunction. This is why Toyota is in such trouble now. I for one will stick to my S Class Mercedes because I know it is safe.
Tell that to the police officer, who was trained to drive and stop a speeding vehicle at high speeds, and who is now dead with his ENTIRE family. This man wasn't an idiot, so let's stop blaming the victim here. No one here should have to know how to stop a vehicle like this other than by normal means, just like I shouldn't have to know how to stop the airplane I'm flying in from crashing to the ground.
Everyone forgets that when a car is speeding, you barely have time to react.
What an incredibly stupid & ignorant comment. Do you realize when this problem happens, on a congested highway, that you barely have any response time? Any professional driver will tell you that. Add to that your natural hormones kicking in, fear, panick, your family screaming around you..and it is very easy to understand how this happened. This didn't happen on some empty race course where you have time to maneuver and stop. His car hit others which caused it to spin out of control.
There's no controversy about this on the mainstream news. It's only on YouTube, where every insensitive asshole who can type likes to come here & act like they are superior to some poor dead guy who didn't have a chance in hell to stop a MALFUNCTIONING car. Toyota has admitted the car malfunctioned, & so have the scientists who studied the car. Yet assholes here on YT forget that and act like the public should know how to do something that ISN'T suppose to happen in the first place.
Let's bottom line this thing once and for all so we stop going back and forth with this shit, ok? The car was malfunctioning, we all know that, Toyota admits it. People aren't required to know how to stop a malfunctioning car nor should they be. Yes, it would be nice if they did know, but then it would also be nice if I knew how to fly a plane in case the pilot died midair. The bottom line is don't blame the victim for not knowing something they aren't required to know. End of story.
Why are you defending Toyota? This company has admitted publicly that they grew too fast, & because of this started using cheap parts & did cheap build quality. I have nothing against this company, I am not faithful to one brand, I am only faithful to a quality product. Toyota USED to be great, but even the car reviews here show they are now using cheap quality products, which led to this man & his families death. Why blindly support a company that does this to the public? Think!
Well if you really are a Toyota employee, don't you feel bad the upper management of Toyota has publicly admitted to cutting corners on quality & materials because the company grew too fast? I don't hold Toyota employees responsible for this, there just doing their jobs, I hold the higher ups in the company responsible, as they are the one who make the big decisions, not the employees. You work with a bunch of "redneck toyota hating morons"? It must be the San Antonio, TX plant..lol.
@Nightbird its still great. every company makes mistakes. TOYOTA did too. they got over confident. but, if u look at the stats lexus is on the top in luxury brands in last 4 years. do you homework. i own a ls460 and let me tell you, i dont have to spend any money on maintainance. night bird every company have their ups and downs. u sound like a illiterate right now.
And thank goodness they can't match Lexus, especially since a Lexus with a bad accelerator killed an entire family recently -google it. I have NEVER heard of a MB, BMW or Audi doing that, have you? The head of Toyota just told the US Congress that his company grew too fast and bought cheap parts for their cars -that's not what I call "quality engineering". At least I know my S Class MB isn't going to kill me, people who drive Lexus' can no longer say the same thing, sadly.
Not for Sporty handling, TO be pampered, comforted and spoilt.
The LS is by far the most refined and comfortable luxury car out there,.
It also has quite good handling , but the steering does lack feedback.
And the quality and engineering is second to none.
No wonder TOYOTAS TAHARA plant (where the LS is made) has one consecutive platinum J.D power awards for quality, effiency and build quality. German cant do that
YAHOO NEWS -- May 20. 2010 – Toyota said Wednesday that it will recall a line of luxury Lexus sedans in the United States and Japan to fix a computerized steering problem.
The recalls will affect 4,500 Lexus "LS" vehicles in Japan and the 3,800 2010 "LS" models that Toyota has sold in the United States. The line is Toyota's top-priced luxury sedan brand, and includes the "LS 600h" hybrid.
***Adam -Now, what was that crap you were saying about "quality"? Whatever! LOL!...***
04-07 audi A8's have bad electrical issues though, my friened forkerd out 1400$ to AUDI to get his cd player and a bunch of buttons in the console to work again.
What makes you think Lexus cares what is popular with Europeans? LOL They're not trying to gain any ground in sales in the heartland of direct competitors
Probably the best production car in the world, overall. Take one for a test drive and you'll see. Also, unlike some of the other brands, they don't break!!
Speaking of practicality, I wish MB's S-class had the auto-park. It's a longer car than the Lexus and has a much larger turning radius (40 ft versus 35/37 ft for the Lexus) and could use that autoparking feature for people who aren't such expert drivers.
I apologize, I'm getting conflicting figures for the S-class' turning radius, ranging from 40 feet to a hard-to-believe 20 feet, so I'll have to do some more research on this.
the autopark is a fraud. it only works for space so big that u wont even need it. I really wished they have a non-hybrid AWD version, i will tell my dad to trade in his ls430 in a flash.
All three brands have their pros and cons. MB is a classier car, BMW handles better, and Lexus is the most practical and their reliability isn't as questioned as the other two's are. I've heard MB's really been trying hard to get better at reliability so their newest models may be a different story.
I understand people who are loyal to their favorite brand, but have you driven or ridden in the LS 460 for any length of time? The quality of materials and engineering will stand up to the German automakers and do so for $20k less. Example: the paint is polished by hand between coats and the silver paint of our test vehicle had a beautiful sheen. The amount of engineering that worked on reducing vibration/noise pays off with a very smooth and comfortable ride.

Listen I completely agree with you that a cars' value is not just determined by 'sportiness". Something that a lot of reviewers tend to do.
But to say it's "by far the most refined and comfortable luxury car out there" is just as weird/ stupid to say as "BMW is the best brand".
It's subjective.. the best doesn't exist.
