Hi! Nifty piece! I'm assuming this is acrylic? I'm just starting out with laser-cutting acrylic, and had been hoping to cut gears for an art project ... but have been reading about crazing of laser-cut acrylic pieces. :-( Have you experienced this, and if so, what do you do to prevent it?
Is that how you're going to blow it off? What personal issues have got you so down that you're out ripping on people to build yourself up? The most tragic part of this whole thing is that you've been on the losing end of this on the technical side as well as the social. Your original comment was so factually incorrect it was irrational. I pointed that out & you've just been dodging & weaving ever since.
Please, go get some counseling. That's not meant as a put down.
Instead of being an arrogant kid who doesn't know any better, you're a grown man??!
Your entire chain of comments displays your lack of proportion, grace and class.
You're an engineer & you slam a guy's shop project w/ a school yard meaness, even calling it shit. I have no doubt that you understand gears but It's clear to everybody that you don't understand civility or kindness.
If you were the only person on the planet your definition would rule, but you're not.
The point of this conversation was that you slammed the video poster's gears - how do you know they aren't laid out w/ all the finest mathematical calculations? I'm sure he used CAD software that has gear patterns in it. I doubt he drafted all those teeth by eye.
It sounds like you're an engineering student & vastly proud of the classes you've taken & want to brag about it. That's pretty sad.
The amount of effort needed to design anything is commensurate w/ the potential damages from a failure & the degree of initial cost & operating efficiencies that are desired.
There are many applications where gear trains & other mechanical devices don't require "engineering", just some common sense. I never said my hand drill's gears were easy to make, just that 2 gears are a simple gear train. You should watch some videos on making & using wooden gears.
When did he say anything about "industrial applications"? He said he was going to make a piece of art out of it. There are a lot of products out there that have plastic gears & they work great because they were properly designed for the loads they were meant to carry. BTW, gear trains can be complex or very simple. There isn't a minimum complexity test for gear trains. I have a hand crank drill w/ two bevel gears, I suppose you wouldn't call that a gear train.
Wanna draw accurate, TRUE INVOLUTE gear teeth? Let me show you how. Maybe you would like to know how to draw a sprocket too!
I have uploaded to youtube several vids for creating TRUE INVOLUTE internal and external gears with backlash and even sprockets using Autocad. The vid of the GEAR Word Document has the formulas and the gear terms to help with your gear and sprocket designs.
These sketches can then be imported into Inventor, extruded, and created on a 3D prototyping machine!
Reall Neet. Its still A planetary Gear Set but the Additions can be considered Moons. The previouse 'planets are the Gravitational perimeters of those planet -moon bodies.

so what does this actually do except for moving the gears? is it somehow fascinating or what?

Not if you have a light load. Gears should be in proportion to the load.
