@theultimaterockr If you roll back the volume, you get a cleaner sound (I've found). If you roll back the tone, you'd get a muddier sound. All that being said, Ive removed the tone control from the circuitry. :D
When you're playing on a "clean" signal (at around 3:50), is there some gain on the amp? It just sounds very slight, but it could be just me, I can't tell
@AcousticRocker1118 coil splitting selects one coil in a humbucker, giving you a more single-coil type sound. Coil tap is when you "tap" a pickup at a certain point in the windings. This allows you to get the full output of the pickup, or the output of the pickup at the tapped point.
@AcousticRocker1118 Errr, I know coil splitting is just turning one coil off. Coil tapping involves something extra... like some capacitor or something being added to the circuit. Maybe someone who knows more would like to comment...?
Nice sounding rig-- I've got a Kramer with a Fred and a FS1 ( keep in mind it was done about 14 or 15 years ago ) and I love them both. FS1 is great with distorted tones as well as the Fred. Love ur amp by the way.
Well if it helps at all I don't think you sound like Vai at all lol (sorry if that offends, I've been drinking). It'd be pretty hard to tell you sound like vai with that shitty camera mic anyways.
I thought you got that idea from their website. I read that from their website, which is what led me to buy and eventually become very disappointed in the EVO2.
Evo2 sounds way different than the Evolution. I have to identical RG550s with the exception of the bridge pickups being different. One Evolution and one Evo2. I hate the Evo2, it has too many lower mids and not enough highs. It's not articulate at all, very much unlike the Evolution.
Nice review, I just wanted to say something about your Evo2 to Evolution statement, "The Evo2 is just an Evolution with more headroom".
@oriont618 That's a fair point. When I said that, what I had in mind was what DiMarzio has on their website: The Evo 2 has the "same basic tone with increased headroom and dynamics." I haven't had the opportunity to wire in an Evolution bridge pickup into that guitar. However, people have commented in my tone as sounding like Vai's... even if I'm playing a Satriani song.
i was thinking of putting a tone zone in the neck and an evo 2 in the bridge although i know the tone zone is for the bridge pickup i really like the tone in the nneck but will the evo 2 work well with the tone zone ????
Hey man, love the sound. I just put a tone zone in the bridge of my Ibanez RG and want to put the Evo 2 in the neck position but I see everyone uses it in the bridge. What do you think of that combo and the placement of the evo 2 in the neck?
@ironman4life89 Well, there are two main reasons why some pickups are considered "bridge" or "neck" pickups: power and eq. Bridge pickups are almost ALWAYS more powerful than their neck counterparts on varying degrees. Also bridge pickups eq are generally more focused in the mids and beck pickups less so (although there are exceptions to both these rules). Putting the Evo 2 in the neck position might be interested, but I wouldn't recommend it. It kinda breaks both the "rules" of pickup placement
ok thanks dude, and would you think if i got a evo2 on my bridge and evolutuion on the neck it would give me aa rob zombie sound? and i have a j5 telecaster
im going to order the evo2 off of guitar center.com and i was wondering if they came in a pack of neck and bridge pickups? if they dont what is your opinion on a neck pickup that will complement the sound of the evo2, because u rock dude
@SqRp777 When you order an Evo 2, it's just the one pickup. Recommendations for the neck pickup are: Evolution neck, Breed neck, PAF Pro, PAF Joe, Fred and anything else someone might recommend. My first choice would be the Evolution neck.
@coffeeflush Well, what kind of metal do you like? What do your favorite artists use? If your gonna get an active pickup in the bridge, you'll almost certainly want an active in the neck. Also, I hate active pickups, so if you ask me, don't bother with them. :)
@samdubusc : Bands like death, behemoth for the rhythm, i prefer the evo's because they are more smooth sounding and don't need batteries but i am worried about the low end as in palm muted riffs and triplets. My current pickups lack the clarity at low ends.
@coffeeflush Well, the Evo 2's don't have that much bass, but prolly not so much that a little EQing can't fix. The thing about bass is that it can make your palm mutes sound big and powerful, but it can also muddy up your sound. If you have less bass, your sound will be more focused and clear... which is great for stuff like triplets.
@WithFullDistortion Yeah, the Evo is in the bridge. I told you what I know about the differences in the PM. The only way I can describe the sound of the Evo 2 is that it's midrangey. It's not really fat sounding, it's focused... it's not thin either though. It *almost* has a nasally sound... however, not in a bad way.
@sensational1982 I'd guess the bumped mids of the Evo 2 would level out the "combed out" mids of a swamp ash body (jemsite has a page about body woods). However, there might be a risk of it sounding thin. For that, something like a Tone Zone or Breed might be better, giving you a fatter tone. But again, I'm just guessing.
Do the evos stay, pretty, clean with a bunch of effects on them? I'm debating between getting either evo's or emgs...though, I am leaning more towards evos, now...from what I've heard out there, on the internet.
One of the plus of emg's are that they stay quite clear even with lots effects...how would you rate your evos to effects. I can hear the usual delay / reverb on your tone...but I'm talking about crazy spacey effects...phasers, flanges, wahs, moog filters...et al...
@novanine9 The Evo's are bright so they stay quite clean. I don't really like active pickups at all compared to passives. I don't really have too many spacey effects, but I'd think the Evo's could take em like a champ. I mean really... we're talking about pickups made for Steve Vai here...
Great demo and playing. I'm curious...what are you doing exactly with your fret hand at 1:57 to around 2:01, to get that most awesome squelch harmonics?
@novanine9 Haha, it's Satriani's signature move! Check out some of his stuff and you're bound to hear it. If you watched some of his live videos, you can see how he does it.
@samdubusc O yea, what are the amp settings? mostly the eq. For my sound i like to crank the mids up to about 8-9 and have the bass about 4 and treble 4-5. I got a duncan jb and it sounds pretty good with that. I was just curious to see how it would be with an evo 2.
The EQ settings I'm using are: Bass 0, Mids 5, Treble 3. I also normally have the gain at about 3. The reason for all of this is basically because is boomy enough with the bass turned all the way down. Also, it starts to sound bad if I turn the treble up too much. I usually record with the gain at about 3, if I'm practicing with the band I normally crank it to about 5 and crank the mast volume.
sweet amp bro have the same one i luckily got mine for like 350$ i own an ibanez rg370dx its got INF4 in bridge wat did your ibanez have? im lookin to upgrade to EVO but i want it to be an upgrade not a midgrade n waste $...thx :)
The DiMarzio Fred was originally in my JS1200 and I've since moved it to the neck position. Yeah, the Evo 2, or any other related DiMarzio pickup, will kick the ass of whatever came stock with your Ibanez.
@samdubusc haha thx dude and ur sound will be similar because we own the same halfstack...i bet u love urs as much as u love mine...even tho its not tube
