I love the Grateful Dead. They are so awesome. But at the same time, I understand the problem that they never quite overcame in their career. They are fucking boring. That's why mainstream success always eluded them. Hey, don't shoot the messenger. I'm just telling you how it is. I personally f--ing love them, I think they're great ....

@aboylegolcom I don't know if "boring" would describe them.. not for most of us anyways! It's just that they weren't a 'singles' band, their closest thing to a hit was Truckin'.. they were a live, lsd-fueled jam band, and there's no room for that in mainstream, and that's fine! It's even a bit of the appeal of them ;)

@Spyes23 Oh, hey I know. I absolutely agree. And I love the Dead. Music for adults. I can't believe that something like Jack Straw came out the same year as Seargent Pepper. People always go on about how advanced the Beatles were for their time, and yet they are cardboard cutout cartoon jingles compared to the Dead. But the Dead are kind of like that really, really, groovy friend you have who never gets anywhere in life because he's so goddamn .... Cool. And Mature. And too nice.

Besides, without The Beatles most of the great music that has come out since, would not exist. The Beatles are the most influential band in the history of Rock and Roll. Ask anyone who has ever picked up an instrument and played Rock and Roll and they will undoubtedly site The Beatles as a major influence. Including The Grateful Dead.
