  • Mother fudging phenomenal. Saw this in NYC last March.. one of the best shows I have ever.. EVER seen.

  • it has a story

  • i love gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnday

  • wow so many Spring Awakening alumni in there.....

  • @RaineaTrenton Whatever. Rent shouldn't even be counted as a rock musical. It is like Spring Awakening, just a pop musical. Neither has true rock music at its core. They have one or two rock songs, but neither captures the spirit of rock in their songs. Unlike American Idiot (and Million Dollar Quartet which are about as close as Broadway has gotten to rock.

  • holy shit...he didnt say "ya know"

  • Eh this feels more like Rent's confused little brother who has nothing better to do.

  • hahahaha.... broadway will never be the same :)

  • this was the first 'Whip My Hair' video :)

  • do they warn people with epilepsy before watching this?

  • @JakiLikesPretzels yea... its actually illegal in most states not to warn of certain special effects on stage. you have to warn for cigarette smoke, strobe lights, foggers and hazers... active intelligent lighting even. a notice has to be posted some where, sometimes their even printed on your tickets.

  • LOL Billie is amazingly derpin'. But I love him. And I loved this musical. <3

  • the set reminds me of RENT!

  • so... was billie joe wasted when he gave that speech?

  • @mccall144 nope, just was being himself lol

  • Anyone else wonder how much time and energy it takes to pack up all these sets, bring them to this theater, use it for 5 minutes, pack it up, and set it up again in their own theatre?

  • @zach2992 yeah i do too. it must take hours!

  • It was birthed, huh Bille? XD CUTIE.

  • Oh, BIllie lol..."Hello! I'm gonna pretend I'm not reading right now." <3

  • I understand why this lost, but it does have an amazing musical score and original cast, and it was innovative and brought rock operas back. It gave a whole new look to what Broadway can be, whether it be Les Miserables to AI. The actual reason this didn't win is that it had less than 25% of an original score written by the the arranger/composer. However, a little goes a long way, and Tom Kitt did an excellent job. U had to see it to actually be amazed; a recording does no justice for Broadway.

  • 4:28- get in a tight group... AND PUNCH!!!

thumbs up if you get my refrence...

  • 13 people were too high to tell the like button from the dislike button.

  • god i wanna see that so bad!!!

  • i love john galagher jr. but i dont like this =(

  • [no hating please, i'm a huge AI fan] but i understand why it didn't win, try walking in some middle-age people's shoes, and think of other shows that have won that award, AI doesn't have such a wide audience, for example, my parents wouldn't want to go see AI specially because it has such a small and clichéed storyline. It's such a cshame because the song arrangements and the actors are so wonderful that i've come to love them more than the greenday's originals, and the choreography is awesome

  • @MVlc29 - i can't completely agree with that though. "Spring Awakening" was really edgy and would make a lot of people in the older crowd feel uncomfortable and that musical won numerous Tony's . i LOVED AI but i cant blame it not winning awards on the reason you stated though..

  • @MVlc29 it's not cliched in any way. Johnny and Tunny move away from their hometown. Will is forced to stay home because he accidentaly got his girlfriend pregnant. Tunny ends up joining the army and looses his leg in battle. Johnny ends up meeting two very important people-Whatsername, Johnny's love interest, and St. Jimmy. St. Jimmy is Johnny's alter-ego and gets Johnny to do drugs. Johnny gets Whatsername to do drugs. Meanwhile, at home in "Jingletown", Will's girlfriend heather had the

  • @MVlc29 baby. Will is refusing to pay any attention to heather, his girlfriend, and their new baby. Heather ends up leaving Will in the song "Too Much Too Soon." Later in the show, you find that heather starts dating a roctskar. Johnyy gets enev more messed up on drugs. Whatsername decides to leave Johnny because she is tired of having to put up with his drug addiction. She leaves him during the song "letterbomb." Tunny, who ended up loosing his leg in battle, is in the hospital. When he falls

  • @MVlc29 into a trance, he envisions this perfect girl called The Extroadinary Girl. They fly around the stage in a song called "Before the Lobotomy/Extroadinary Girl." Once Tunny wakes up and realizes that it was a dream, he is in extroadinary pain. He notices that one of his nurses was the girl who he envisioned as The Extroadinary Girl. Johnny decides to clean up. Both him and tunny return back home - tunny is with a fake leg. Johnny never sees Whatsername ever again. And you said it was

  • @MVlc29 And you said it was lacking in storyline. Just because that not many words are spoken, does not mean that the show is lacking in story line.

  • @merbethmango nice summary! but i didn't say it lacked a storyline.. just that in my opinion it had all been said before.. there are plenty of movies of youngters starting a journey to know who they are, falling off the wagon, joining the army.... and then coming back home either in victory or in defeat. That being said, I LOVED THE MUSICAL, every single one of the actors did a wonderful job. So no hating, please. =)

  • @MVlc29 i'm not hating. sorry about that. i was just in a bad mood. sorry about that. haha yeah can you tell i've seen the show before? hahaha

  • how many times have i said that i love them all?

  • I think the first quesiton you should ask is..did you see both and if you didnt u cant say that one is better than the other...that being said. Just because Memphis won doesnt make this one horrible, just different. I dont know why any of you are debating it anyway...love this tho!!!!!

  • What's with the girl in the red jacket at 4:04? Is she hyped on caffeine?

  • the reason why people are hating in this cause it wasnt lipped it was LIVE! too bad oh well STFU HATERS!

  • Why does it look like an odd combination of RENT and Spring Awakening?

  • Billie Joe, can I steal your hair? Just for like, a day?

    kthxbai

  • It sounds wrong without Billi Joe and the guys :(

It's well done, but it's just not Green Day :'(

  • I don't get it.

  • Wow well done on ruining one of my favourite ever albums

  • those guys fuckin suck at singing. should have billie joe do it all

  • Is this punk rock? Is it fuck.

  • @meepage332 kiddy pop punk maybe

  • I remember when I saw this and met JGJ after the show. I was so nervous I couldn't even take a picture of my friend and him. Good times.

  • This is absolutely shite.

  • fucking hell that vocalist sucks!! SO MUCH!! oh wait, theres more! they ALL SUCK!

  • @MorticiaHendrix and from a guy with 'Hendrix' in his name. you should know better...this is horrible

  • @tiddlywinks98712

You really don't have anything smarter to say don't you.

okkkk i'm still with saying GFY.

    peace

  • @tiddlywinks98712 then dont watch the videos

  • okay NOW I know what my drama teacher means by EXAGGERATED movement! This is seriously cool :)

  • Oh I really want to see this so bad!!!! I have wanted to go since I heard it was coming on Broadway and just haven't been able to see it =/

  • nerimon brought me here.

  • Love it!! :)))

  • very powerful. VERY powerful! Love it!

  • THIS IS AMAZING.

  • meu lindo ♥

  • Defo for winning best lighting design... But glad not best musical. (very over hyped musical)

  • Where's the standing ovation? LAME!!! This rocks.

  • I'm not sure what I think about this.

  • I kinda feel bad for the girl hanging upside down. Lol Can you imagine a director coming up to you and saying "Hey during this song we're gonna have you hang upside down for a while with bright flashing lights all around!" And all the blood rushes to her head. Lol. Love this song and so far the musical! Great job guys!

  • @pouncival2003 well she is a trained arielist. she does a huge flying scene later in the showw

  • well first of all the voice is not punk anymore and there are less destruction made. smashing a guitar, flying chair would do but still its great but i don't feel the punk anymore as a GreenDay Fan. Its great after all.

  • which people from spring awakening are in thisss?

  • @sourpatch5559 john gallagher jr is from spring awakening.

  • @sourpatch5559 Also the guy who sings "Well maybe I'm the f----- America!" is from Spring Awakening

  • im sorry but that last pose...very rent lol

  • LMFAO 0:37 <3

  • Billie Joe ... I love you <3

Oh and I love you too John Gallagher Jr <3 !

    December 21st ! 12th row !!

  • At 3:55 you can see all the extras taking their collective breaths like one big creature.

  • I can't wait until I can go to New York and see this. Three years!

  • I love this show so much that I wanna see it again... and again and again. <3

  • This show is amazing!

  • i love that some of the spring awakening cast is in this . . . I am in love with John Gallagher Jr <3

  • dunno why, but this remembered me RENT

  • this BY NO MEANS does the show justice, it may not have much of a storyline or complicated harmonies but the genius of the show is in its energy and the passion of the people performing, something that just can't be experienced in a recording

  • @bluesquirellbaby it just gives a visual

  • ''im gonna pretend im not reading right now'' xDD love him so much!!<3<3

  • I have GOT to see this show =P

  • Stark Sands is amazing!!!!!!!!!

  • This is so cool! I wish I could see this in Australia...

  • haha bille ur awesome :)

  • this is why I stopped watching Tony Awards

  • Is the guy in the skull cap Silas from "Weeds"??

  • i've been to the broadway theater a total of 18 times, and out of all of them, american idiot was the best.

  • @lovegood1girl you probably haven't seen it live...so you can't really talk until you've seen it live.

  • Green day broadway musical TOTALY ROCKS

  • Comment removed

  • the guy at 2:39 he kinda reminds me of tre cool a bit

  • oh yea. this is punk.

  • this seems like it's for stoners and spazzes. .....IT'S PERFECT <3

  • American Idiot may be a non traditional musical, and I'm not knocking it, but when I went to see Memphis, it was so powerful the whole audience was moved and there was not a dry eye in the house. American Idiot covers current issues of the day and Memphis tells a story of overcoming racial persecution at a time when it was most difficult.

  • I loved Memphis and I think they won the Tony because it was exactly what the Tony’s tend to award: a big “Broadway” musical, it fit all the descriptions for a classic “Broadway” show. I just think people need to accept American Idiot for what it is and stop hating it just because it isn’t classic Broadway.

  • (Part 2)I actually didn’t see the Tony performance until after I had listened to the music and I was blown away by the power and freedom the actors had. THIS is what a real rock-opera is suppose to be like. I’m proud to add this show to the ranks of Rent, Hair, and Spring Awakening. It’s a show that’s not afraid to push limits and shock the eyes. And no, it’s not for everyone, I can definitely understand that.

  • (Part one of my comments)Wow, there are some amazing discussions going on in these comments(no sarcasm, I'm serious). When I first heard about American Idiot I was a little apprehensive because I wasn’t familiar enough with Green Day to truly trust them to give me a good story. But as soon as I listened to the cast album and discovered the rich, powerful lyrics I was put at ease.

  • I'd also like to say the Billy was being an ass during his opening speech :/ Shocker. Couldn't he pretend to be polite for 2 minutes?

  • "Gonna pretend that i'm not reading right now... Ready?"

I heard only like 5 people laugh. D:

  • I saw this on broadway and while this number was absolutely INCREDIBLE (along with a lot of others that blew me away) the story just wasn't there. I saw Memphis the day after and Memphis was absolutely incredible, they deserved the Tony! American Idiot WAS amazing though....Just...not ment for children either! haha

  • kinda RENT rip off.....still nice though

  • I love his face at 37 seconds!!!

  • i love green day, but i have mixed feelings about the musical itself. the music was amazing and very well performed and used, the cast was good and the set was totally cool. my problem was that i had a really hard time following the plot, because there was very little dialogue and everything was very metaphorical, so it's a little hard to understand with how fast everything happens in the show.

  • LOL, I love how Billie said "Honor"

  • I went to see this show on Broadway in June... OH MY GOD!!! It was AMAZING!! I absolutely loved it.. I'm a super green day fan.. but my sister who was with me never really cared for them.. she changed her opinion after seeing this! This is genious! :)

  • i can assure you that memphis music would never win a grammy.....

GREEN DAY DID WIN A GRAMMY WITH AMERICAN IDIOT..... and so much important awards; that loosing one its not big deal... so Memphis can keep his tony... is the only thing they will win...

  • just saw the MEMPHIS performance at the tonys.... and i must say......

WTF..!! THE BROADWAY STEREOTYPE AGAIN?? just because the music is "original"?....

AMERICAN IDIOT WERE, IS, AND WILL BE THE BEST MUSICAL OF 2010....

  • ahahahahaha extraordinary girl is doing the trout dance :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

  • "I'm gonna pretend i'm not reading..right not. Ready?" Really, i couldn't fail to notice XD

  • Stark Sands <3

  • rock musicals ftw

  • how the hell memphis beat this?? this is not the typical broadway musical, but it's till GREAT!

  • @werejilla

If I were the "King of Broadway" no show where performers wore mikes like that would be eligible for a "Tony"--a "Grammy", "Emmy" or "Oscar" maybe but a "Tony".

    No way.

  • @YD8189 luckyly, your you are not the king of broadway, clearly you are a person of closed mind and little criterion

  • @mOntsecOrdOm

I can see where you might feel that way. After all who wants to hear the beauty of

an unamplified voice that is the product of years of formal training when you can mask its flaws with tinny, overamplication that blows out eardrums?

And who would actually want to see the shifting moods of an actor's face if you can blind audiences with more strobes than you have in the entire KMart chain?

It's brilliant --if sensory waterboarding is your thing and you need more "Rent."

  • @YD8189 you can say all the shit you want.... with all your "mask" language.....

If you dont like American Idiot as a musical, i can asume that you prefere the typical broadway style, silly dancings, repetitive themes, and all the "formal" things you want to add....

Music is about freedom, and theatre and musicals are expresions of the society, made for the people..!! the society is diverse, this musical its only for a part of society.... clearly you're not in it....

  • @YD8189 so if you're are not going to admire this master peace and respect it....

STEP BACK AND STAY IN SILENCE.....

  • @werejilla thats reason why it's not the typical broadway musical twhich i think is lame ass memphis is ok but this show should be way more popular than it is for sure but for some reason some cirtics hate it cause it's not cutesy lovey dovey crap lol

  • @werejilla Did you see both?

  • @werejilla simple. Memphis is original music with a legit and wondeful story line. American Idiot is mainly just good dancing.

  • @THodges09 first, this is not dancing, because PUNK its not about that, second, original music or not, American Idiot was/is better than Memphis... in music, cast, energy... besides, original music?? the 50's, 60's musical is so used, the typical "imposible love" betwen people, music, history... HAIRSPRAY DUH..!

  • @mOntsecOrdOm i'm going to go out on a limb and say you are a green day fan? as in, your view would be biased.

    ok, let me explain.

"a disaffected youth who flees stifling suburbia and his parents' restrictions to look for meaning in his life"... yeah, as if that hasn't already been done.

imo, the reason memphis beat out american idiot, is because of its overall stature. imo, memphis has better vocals, stage work, choreography etc.

plus, american idiot reaches out to the younger viewers.

  • @THodges09 dude..! whatever..! yeah Memphis won, but it was not BY FAR the best musical... Memphis has better vocals, stage work? yeah, sure... like Memphis got Tony Vincent right? John Gallagher Jr? Davey Havok? Melissa Etheridge? like the creators and writters of the songs of Memphis stand up in a stage like BJA right??? and yeah sure, American Idiot reaches out to the younger viewers.. HOW OLD ARE YOU? 60? is the punk music just too much for you?

  • @mOntsecOrdOm I have seen AI twice; liked it a lot but can understand why it did not win best musical; it was too heavy on musical song and very light on story; ie almost no narrative. To be a complete broadway musical it has to have a good story line as well. Having said this i recommend everyone to see this before it closes last week of April. and try to spring for seats closest to the stage; it really makes a difference.

  • @THodges09 if i have to be like an old and closed-mind person like you.. yeah i rather be a "younger viewer".... see you..!! im tired and you're a really boring person....

  • @mOntsecOrdOm "old and closed-mind person" dude, i'm actually younger than you. all i'm trying to point out, is that American Idiot has more appeal to the fans of green day, and the younger viewers. Memphis has more appeal to everyone. and the majority of the people involved with deciding the winner of the tony, were some of the older people/ non fans of green day.

  • Why didn't people stand up?I would be screaming my lungs out! Loved it! I love John Gallagher Jr,although his voice didn't sound so good in this one.

  • @Tyanes17 he sounds AMAZING live though. and he's such a sweetheart if you run into him on the street :)

  • @Tyanes17 people dnt stand up coz its a bunch of brodway snobs who think it has to be perfect. that was rock not some opra crap :P

  • because the average age of the audience was about 60.

  • woah, how knackered would the cast be for the rest of the show with THAT opening number!

  • The score seems so 80's! I love it.

  • billy joe seams so fucked up

  • now this would be an epic musical to be apart of....

  • the singing is rather fantastic, but the dancing just makes me ask what the fuck?

  • @clownrus hahah really? i guess i could kinda see that but for some reason if eel like the dancing fits perfectly

  • @x3nicoleey They're just running back and forth...rather clumsily too.

  • @clownrus umm it's obviously choreographed they wouldn't just run around.

  • @x3nicoleey No shit it's choreographed, did I say it wasn't? It's just bad choreography.

  • @clownrus its supposed to be like that. american idiot is about teen angst, it would look silly if the dancing was typical broadway style.

  • @guitaura You're right. Because having rehearsed actual choreography is SOO YESTERDAY.

  • @clownrus Hahah I'm not quite sure why you're being so sarcastic. I'm trying to explain why the messy chaotic choreography works with the edgy style of the show. No need to argue, take it down a few notches.

  • @x3nicoleey Yeah, I feel like the chaotic dancing of it all really fits into the punkiness of it.
