That piece from DC-10 was actually illegal one made from worse materials than certified ones, and thats why it fell off. Blame continental, not DC-10. Also in normal airliner it wouldnt have been disaster, its not that unusual to get hit by piece of metal on runway and it would not cause massive fire on normal airplane.

Spanair is not a bad company. They're getting rid of Md's. Their planes are much more comfortable than many others airlines'.
I used to fly very often with spainair (germany-spain & within spain). I liked them for always being on time and never losing your baggage, unlike Iberia. but something changed with that company over the years since 2003 and since THIS crash I've never flown again with them & never will.
This was clearly caused by time pressure, together with louse maintenance & incomplete checks of the aircraft. Last week I read Spanair still has money problems, so I wouldn't recommend ANYONE to fly with them
its all about MONEY. the CEO and leaders of airlines do the very MINIMUM maintentance and keep those fucking hunkers flying all day. do you think the CEO's reallly care if one or two might go down?...i dont think so, as long as they get their money, they re happy...plus why do they care if the aircraft are maintaned when they have their private jets to fly in.

my brother was in the airport to take the following fly to Gran Canaria. I was speaking with him few minutes after the accident and nowbody Knew at that moment nothing about the accident, And my neighbourhood saved the life of her son but lost a daughter. The son was only 5 years , he was one of the 28 survivor.
i was landing at madrid airport when this happened....from the skies i saw the smoke...... i thought it was a forest fire ..... my next flight got delayed 5 hours....... and still i didnt know it was a plane crash until i called my dad to tell him the delayed flight..... and he told me the sad news...... sad but true...... rest in peace to all those in that flight.....

My mother and sister departed from Madrid-Barajas right 15 minutes before the crash...
I was calm as I knew her flight was to Morocco instead this plane was announced on TV that was on course to the Canary Islands...
Anyway I was aware she flew Easyjet and they had bullet proof fleet of A320´s...so nothing to scare of...unlike Spanair crappy MD80´s...

@bestamerica Some sort of logic-bomb. It has been programmed to fail the day of the disaster. The infection caused the presence of faulty and unruly informations on the airplane flight deck, not showing the real status of the airplane (that it was already crippled).

my brother was in the airport to take the following fly to Gran Canaria. I was speaking with him few minutes after the accident and nowbody Knew at that moment nothing about the accident, And my neighbourhood saved the life of her son but lost a daughter. The son was only 5 years , he was one of the 28 survivor.

As it took off it stalled and skidded on the ground and slammed into an underpass!
Nevermind that comment i made, only a few had design flaws but overall safe aircraft.

i was landing at madrid airport when this happened....from the skies i saw the smoke...... i thought it was a forest fire ..... my next flight got delayed 5 hours....... and still i didnt know it was a plane crash until i called my dad to tell him the delayed flight..... and he told me the sad news...... sad but true...... rest in peace to all those in that flight.....
p.s. i was heading to tenerife, in the same spanair airlines...

How even one plane crashes and everyone dies and yet people continue to step on board to them amazes me. 100 years of aviation, advances in performance and size, but yet, nothing for safety and they still burst into flames, WTF?

This was truely terrible, mostly as those killed were just kiddies. I hated the way Spanair said they had a dedicated team to comfort the relatives, if they killed my kids they would be the last people on the planet I'd want to talk to.

holy shite, i was at the airport that day!!! i just couldnt believe it. i was waiting for my iberia flight to malaga looking out of the terminal and watched the plane and it crashed i can still see it like it was yesterday and i dont think ill ever forget it

I remember in 2005 I flew with this airline company from Prestwick International airport (spanair's main hub) to Alicante airport. I must say what a fucking shitty airline it was such a load of bollocks. If any airline for flying with for 2 to 4 hours fly Thomas Cook or Thomson 1000 x better.
