This is an alternate version of YJMBTO, different from the one on their Headquarters LP. Many of their songs on the TV show differ from the album or single versions.
@joeyc09 Mickey had to learn to play the drums for the show. Davy was an actor, Mike played folk music for a couple talent shows and Peter played music in the local teen scene of Greenwich Village, NY. which hardly qualified them as accomplished musicians. They may have co-wrote some of their stuff and learned to adequately play an instrument, but face it, when their show was done, so were they. With the right studio musicians, anyone anywhere can make a pop album and sell it.
The Monkees show was written to be a spoof off of the Beatles, " A Hard Days Night." Screen Gems hired a bunch of pop music writers to write music for four cute boys who wanted a job, told them we need you to clown around on camera and learn to play basic stuff on an instrument. Here Come The Monkees!
Great Nesmith tune and this isn't the same version as the LP.Vocally, they are awesome and Mike and Peter can play, probably alot better than most of the downer people who chastise them!! They do a great job looking the part, playing their instruments, unlike the Partridge Family!!Now THAT was campy!!(but still loved them as well)Good times, good music, good TV!!
@bloodythinandfast David Cassidy was a musician prior to the PF and Shirley Jones was in several Broadway musical's before The P F show.
Mickey Dolenz had done a few bits of acting before the Monkeys and Davy Jones was a horse jockey before the Monkees. Mike Nesmith was a hick from Texas and no musician. Peter Tork was the only Monkee that had any established musicial abilities. The rest were as fake as Danny Bonaduce.
@kitty29551 wow,...a real hard on...I was around in the sixties.I gave you some actual facts about the songwriting...Mike Nesmith is a terrific musician, but you want to call him a hick from Texas and no musician,...you've proved your ignorance...go talk at someone who will listen to absolute bullshit...

larry, i totally agree. i think their campy show made them less believable as musicians. my favorite tunes are Nesmith's. still...love them all and always will
@stanofsteel211 You have to remember that they did not write any of their tunes, which is a big reason Nesmith won't have anything to do with reunion's or appearances today...unfortunately.

"Davy Jones gets upset after being asked about retirement on live radio program!" Plug that title into utube and then tell me again how misinformed I am.

I wish that people appreciated The Monkees more. Everywhere you go it's Rolling Stones, The Beatles or Pink Floyd shirts, never The Monkees=( Not fair!
@mcflyfreakify because people consider Beatles and Rolling Stones to be cool and the Monkees to be somewhat cheesy....but you go and order up a Monkees shirt and wear it to your hearts delight.
@Sigillalith I agree that afro was not a good as the long straight hair So true, though Micky will always be Micky :) :D <3 (gah I love micky) for full episodes try finding DVDs to buy of 1st season (a lot of electronics stores sell them) theres one or two full first season episodes up here on YouTube and I know theyve got full ones on viddler.com if you make an account.
Mike always stood out as a great singer songwriter. I even recognized that as a 7 year old in the '60's! When I got older I sort of disassociated myself with the Monkees as it seemed a bit uncool. Now in my fifties, on revisiting this music, I am reminded how great that music was, particularly Mike's.
I was born in the eighties and as a child would sneak out of bed to watch The Monkees on Nick at Night. This song is one of the top played song my iTunes!
I think the Monkees had the most interesting story as a band. First a media product. Then an admission as such by the band. Then a conscientious attempt a legitimacy, and finally a genuine band. It would make a great story in the right hands.
(continued)..and Yes, Mike ..tired of the "Pre-Fab Four" image they had after the first 2 studio albums (primarily done by anonymous Hollywood session men) managed to shape them up into a real band eventually..and with the release of "Headquarters" (which was released the same day as Sgt. Pepper as luck would have it !)(..and which I remember so well as a 13 year-old) they came into their own. (part two)
@ Colleen : your point is well taken, but not entirely true...Peter was an accomplished folk artist in the Wash DC area before he joined the band...but true.. Davy (though well established in English musicals) was (and is) a singer primarily..while Mickey (being an actor on "Circus Boy") had only recently learned the drums by the advent of The Monkees..and he certainly developed into a fantastic singer as well. (part one)
I love the Monkees so much! I like their individuality. Mike's the cowboy, Peter's the hippi, Davy's the englishman, and Micky's...Micky :) I do wish i could find full episodes of season one. I miss their matching outfits :) and Micky's non-afro :)
I love the Monkees and always did! They sang great and awesome songs! The show as kind of corny but the talent was awesome! Don't put them down people they are a legend!
I love the Monkees and always did! They sang great and awesome songs! The show as kind of corny but the talent was awesome! Don't put them down people they are a legend!
Over the past 2 weeks me & my hubby have watched the series again. I grew up watching the show, and my hubby remembers seeing the shows with the 80s resurgence of the Monkees. He dedicated this song to me when we first started dating. And now almost 9 years later (almost 5 years married - YIKES!) it DOES look like he IS the one :)
Peter is bending down pretty low to sing in the mic lol. Love this song. I remember watching this in the mid 70's and loving the energy of the performance even if they are only lip syching
Well, it may be a bit fast, but this is the TV version and not the one released on record. This recording is on "Missing Links 2". It's 2 minutes long there, so it's slightly sped up on this episode for more Kellogg's commercials!
Absolutely untrue. Even Mike has admitted that Peter was the only one of the Monkees who was professionally trained and truly a skilled guitarist and excellent on banjo too. Peter is also the only one of the Monkees who can actually arrange and orchestrate music, fact.
The Monkees may be the most underrated group of all time. They made some GREAT music, yet no one seems to appreciate them. And Nesmith is a genius. The man pretty much invented country rock in 1963 when he stated releasing his "Michael Blessing" singles...then he was heavily involved in the team that invented MTV in 1981. Plus, his mom invented Liquid Paper!! Guess it runs in the family...
I agree The Monkees were awesome back then and gave the Beatles and Rolling Stones competition. They outsold both of them musically in 1967. The Monkees created and self produced some of the best music that I have ever heard. The headquarters album is only one example. Long live the Monkees True Rock Legends. I am so happy that I am able to see them again on Antenna TV. I will not watch the phony, political and superficial Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until the Monkees are inducted.
PETER IS THE MAN!! (But I think he was hittin' the hooch before they shot this!) I wouldn't say "no" to any of them, but I would have gone home with Peter.
Mike's a great song writer. I like his songs because they have their own distinctive sound and atmosphere. The music and the lyrics are both great. And his voice matches the music he writes.

I think that in the beginning, at 0:06 Mike notices that Davy's not lip syncing along and just kinda laughs at him like 'aren't you gonna sing?'. And then at 1:35 Davy shaking 'nooo' at 'you just may be the one' lol. Love this video.

@42feenix hey!....i too noticed!....Peter is simulating "head" on that microphone....whether it was intentional or not, only Peter knows for sure!!!....
@42feenix - so Peter's a spaz......probably why they chose him for the series. Don't believe that equates into what you're saying. C'mon, people......

willomina1990 6 months ago

42feenix 6 months ago 4
@42feenix hey!....i too noticed!....Peter is simulating "head" on that microphone....whether it was intentional or not, only Peter knows for sure!!!....
willomina1990 6 months ago
@42feenix - so Peter's a spaz......probably why they chose him for the series. Don't believe that equates into what you're saying. C'mon, people......
