This started on April 15, 2000 when Dave Stevens was abducted and killed and several of his friends who came to his calls for help were beaten unconscious. By the end of April more than 2000 farms had been invaded. The pattern of war veterans squatting a farm is always the same: gangs armed with axes and machetes move into a farm, beat workers and force them to attend all-night pungwe a meeting where they have chant party slogans and are forced to submit. Others get beaten or killed.

Next, a farmer gets rounded up, overpowered and beaten or killed. 18 April 2000 Martin Olds was surrounded this way by 100 war vets with AK47 shooting at his house. One of the bullets smashed his leg bone. He radioed for help, but local farmers could not get to him because police set up roadblocks around the farm. Olds managed to splinter his leg and for three hours held off his attackers with a pistol, crawling from room to room. Finally he was outgunned, dragged out and hacked to death.

After the farmer is evicted or killed, war vets pillage his personal belongings and farm tools, they even pull up irrigation pipes and sell them for scrap metal, they tear out baths and toilets, remove window frames and electrical wiring all for sale. Frequently the marauders turn weapons on each other fighting for their share. The farm turns into ruins and very little farming goes on the farm. The invaders have no seeds or fertilizer and absolutely no idea about running a large farm.

From a witness who visited such a pillaged farm few months after the invasion: The squatters thought that we came to reclaim the farm and seem disappointed. We heard the whites are coming back says one. An old man pulls out a sheaf of withered-looking tobacco leaves. We dont know what to do, we are hungry and no one comes to help us. The farmhouse has been striped off all furniture and fittings; several families are squatting among dries faeces, cooking from fires on the floor.

Pillaging mobs on a rampage, farmers and their workers beaten and killed, houses robbed, equipment stolen or vandalised, land laying waste, professional and skilful people emigrating by scores. And reaping the sown, the very same people who plundered and stole are starving and dying from diseases while blaming for this those who they drove out and robbed.

I'm African and Black and really do sympathize with the plight of white farmers in Zimbabwe. Yes they gained huge tracts of Land unfairly but what is going on right now doesn't benefit anyone. This issue should have been settled in a civil way because most of these farmers inherited the land from their parents and some were born there. Have some kind of farmland tax, or make farmers contribute to their locality, something! Not kill, maim, and go hungry. Days to destroy, years to rebuild!

very true and sane words - however daniells71, farmers, like my family still on the land in Zim, have contributed more than the government over many years. they have built schools, clinics, provide transport and food. but yes, a tax would be one way, but that's not what ZANU want. their agenda is greed and power and not the welfare of the nation. sadly, this tragedy has to happen, so the population understand how they have been conned. it is the long hard road to democracy.
