Almost all people think that fontains and Cascades powder formulae are less ofensive (dangerous) but the trully is straight inverse.

These formulations do not contains the good ratio between combustible/oxidizer but are very good in termic transmission (metalic excess). Is these that make occurs the transition (burnning-deflagration-detonat­ion) at each 1ºC more the decomposition reaction increases exponencially  (one zero per degree - ex : + 3ºC =10^3x =1000 faster reaction)

Waterfall composition is very simmilar to flash powder much used in salutes., Only taht coarser aluminum particles are used and dextrin is added to slow the burning effect and make it hold together. I highly suspect detonators were used in this demo or they were all ignited at once.

I think it's just that it reached critical mass. Gunpowder will explode in an open pile above 500 lbs. The heat and pressure compounds itself. Type in sparkler bomb 1000 on youtube and you'll see that a bunch of sparklers tied together acts very different than 1 sparkler alone.
