From what I heard, Gage already figured it out... he's asking it in a way that might get the Dean to figure it out but in reality, not for the sake of finding an answer Gage couldn't figure out but so the Dean will really see that it doesn't add up for himself. Then a gear in the Dean's mind might start to turn that questions the official explanation details as not being physically accurate.
