Another good video Barry. How I wish our platforms were this empty. As a Man of Kent who regularly saw the GA at Tonbridge I started reading some of the other comments. Just as a point of interest I guess you know the reason for there being two Man of Kent trains in each direction each day was simply because of the difficulty in changing the roof nameboards on the carriages between trains? Chris
Yet another good vid Barry with an excellent factual intro description, well above the efforts of most especially me.
Have a good Christmas yourself and keep the vids coming, I'll have to consider re-locating from the Midlands, but at least it has it's benefits for my main passion visiting Model Railway Exhibitions. Cheers Graham.
Nice One a cute little whistle nice to hear it winding up - Caught her further down the line at Taplow where she seems to have a bit of an uneven beat, and lord knows what they were burning but very smoky and a heavy sulphur smell.
Like your history bit in the vid description, however the vid title needs to have 'Up' removed as it was as you say on the 'Down' when you filmed it. It was on the 'Up' from Rainham to Willesden then on the 'Down' from there. I am surprised NR considered this loco out of gauge on the Southern, given that they worked the 'Golden Arrow' and 'Night Ferry' services in the latter days of 'Dampf' on the 'sarfeastern'
@englischlokfuehrer Hi. The train and the rails it runs on are different. The train is Up because Bristol is a more important place than Rainham. It's not unusual for cross-London trains to be Up trains (or Down trains) but run on the opposite track. I don't think the Arrow or N Ferry worked through to Rochester on the old LCDR line. They turned off and went through Orpington and Sevenoaks (South-Eastern). Thanks for the comment and for watching. Barry
@bkendlerA4 Hi, I don't know what you do for a living, but please do not insult railwaymen of 33 years standing with such drivel in the first part of your reply. For your information, all lines to London are classed as UP, all lines away from London are classed as DOWN, The exception to this is in Scotland where all lines lead to Edinburgh as the focal point. As for the GA & NF not going via Rochester, Sorry but I have been on these trains that way hauled by E5000's (class 71's as they became)
@englischlokfuehrer Hey, calm down. I have not insulted anybody. I have passed onto you what I learnt from railwaymen actually. I am well aware that tracks from London are Down and tracks to London are Up. However, no-one has told me that the tracks affect whether a train is Down or Up. If a train is going through London then surely its arrival and departure points are what determines whether it's Up or Down. A train, during its journey can't switch from being an Up or Down train. Barry
@bkendlerA4 In theory it does change direction depending on the line it is on, Cross Country trains in particular are notorious for this. To add more confusion, I understand the former Midland railway's focal point was Derby and this is reflected in particular in the Birmingham area - for instance, going from Tysley to New Street, the directions are Down, Up, Down - The Up line being the short bit by the 'City' football stadium.
@englischlokfuehrer Hiya, I've done a bit of checking on what you informed me and I agree that you're right and I was wrong. I like to learn so I do not mind being told when I mistakes or am not accurate. However, please do not say my writing is drivel because drivel is "nonsense". I wrote something inaccurate not nonsense. Also I was not insulting anyone and my working life has nothing to do with either. So thanks for correcting me but please do it next time more gently. Barry
@bkendlerA4 I did not say at any time that your writing was drivel or nonsense, in the first instance just merely correcting your vid title words, but point taken anyway. Drivel is what the tabloids write !
@englischlokfuehrer - Hi. It could have been that the E5000's locos which hauled the GA and the NF which went via rochester went that way because of engineering works because their regular route was Orpington and Sevenoaks. I lived near Sevenoaks and regularly went to the station, and Tonbridge and Tonbridge shed.
@beowulf3075 I did the GA run shortly before it's demise and that was a Sat PM from Dover, and the NF run was a Sunday Morning, nice sight from the back of the NF train after crossing the Medway at Rochester.
@englischlokfuehrer - Obviously I don't doubt what you say, for sure the Thanet Belle/Kentish Belle ran via Rochester but the regular route of the GA and NF was definitely through Orpington, I would see the GA daily, NF not so often, because of its timing. BTW I have your remembrance quotation to railwaymen everywhere on my profile so we have chatted before. I had an uncle who worked the Dunton Green to Westerham branch line, we'd see the GA from Dunton Green also.
@beowulf3075 And 'The Man of Kent', which I believe and open to correction did the 3rd side of the triangle near Dover (2 sides are in use today with London bound and Ramsgate bound trains).
@englischlokfuehrer - Ah, the Man of Kent, I had forgotten about that one. Do you know, I am from Kent originally and still don't know if I was a Kentish man or a Man of Kent.
TBH I am not sure about that particular train, I certainly saw it but being so near to London (about 20km) there wasn't much that I didn't see.
That's some good action Barry, got a green tick from me. Looking forward to seeing Brittany tomorrow when she does her first Cathedrals run up to Chester at NMP.
Nice one Barry, I am afraid I won't be uploading anything for awhile as I have just been diagnosed with the full blown Flu and I had the Jab.................I am not Happy, 4 weeks indoors is going to be angony keep them coming.

@khankadet Hiya Chris, AML is a quiet station as it only has a half-hourly service. I regret I didn't see the Southern more when I was a kid. Barry

@beowulf3075 I understand it has something to do which side of the Medway you were born and / or live
englischlokfuehrer 2 months ago
@englischlokfuehrer - That's right, I have only lived (and of course born) one side but nearly went to the other, but that's history.
What unites us all here is a love of railways, steam diesel and electric, and respect for all the devoted work by the railwaymen (and women).
