Music - The root of music begins and ends with the sound. The sound is what makes the album, it's not just about the beat. It's the real raw emotion of the words and the melody. The hurt, pain, and joy. That's why the Motown sound never gets old and is timeless, just ask anyone over 40. I'm a 90's kid, so this sound is a part of me and will always be a part of my life. I have laughed and cried because of this music, it's in my soul.
This is incredible. Had always listened to Janis Joplin's version and thought it was great, but this is beyond any version ever performed of this song. I love Sharon Jones!
I have just 'discovered' soul, I've known this song since I was a baby, but LADY! I am a lifelong fan, expect your record sales to go up from me alone!!
One of the greatest songs of all time - and equivelent to Shakespeare for an actor - every real singer is compelled to give it a crack ...................... but THIS? George and Ira Gershwin must be shouting down from heaven - "THAT's what I mean... yeah".
Go Sharon! Go Charlie! You unleash and affirm the thing that connects us all - SOUL
@RAMJAMOZ No one could have said it better. Thank you for your comment. This is a fantastic and really elevated performance of this song. I only heard about Sharon Jones recently and I hope we hear a lot more from her. She's fantastic and so is Charles Walker.
I'm supposed to be working and I've watched this video 5X now. I even read an article on the Dap Kings on the HARP magazine website. Tragically, I live in Atlanta so I will have to travel to see Ms. Sharon. On a positive note, Mr. Walker and the Dynamites are up the river in Nashville so maybe we can get up there. Such soul! This duet just reaches into my heart and rips it out.
Wow!!!!! Fabulous!!!!! So intense!!! Just discovered Sharon Jones on TV and I ran and logged on youtube to find more of her performances! What a woman!!!!! Yes, she's got a great gift and she is sharing it soooo well!!!! I want to see her live!!!!! What a voice (not to mention Charles Walker - great duet!!!!!) Amen to the greatest voices in the world!!!!!
It's written by George Gershwin, from "Porgy and Bess". There are countless really amazing recordings too over the years- Janis Joplin had a huge hit with it in the '70's....and it's been covered by every great jazz vocalist as well...
This is a really good version, but I miss the vibes; they're one of my favorite aspects of the piece. Did it originally have vocals or where they a later addition? Most of the Gershwin recordings I've heard are strictly instrumental.
Wow! Gives me shivers... in a positive way... I sure needed that...
