::from an Accounting-degreed black male born in the late '60's who NEVER lived anywhere close to a "ghetto", nor struggled for much in life, and had both well-to-do parents around::
I clearly understand that the intention of this song was to bring some form of awareness to one of America's big illnesses... but, it still seems rather racist. Why didn't Elvis sing of the various Jim Crow laws that helped to produce these so-called "ghettos"?
Thumbs if you're listening to this now thanks to your mom or dad always playing classic music like this in the car, and having some of the best memories of your life just driving around and then loving this music.
reminds me of my childhood only im still alive but now a drug addict and struggle everyday.. but alot of the people i grew up with are now 6 foot under.. the rich get richer and the poor get poorer
Seems like comments are yielding to some fellow that goes by the name of Eric Cartman over Elvis - well I'd reckon that Elvis is second to this Eric Cartman and you Elvis lovers are so remiss and uncouth wrapped up in your yellow fame of a man that was a drug abuser and womanizer. Elvis is equivalent to that lesser than a pile of 6 month old rotting camel shit in an Iraqi desert. Elvis sucks!

Good grief lot of goofy comments. He wasn't singing like HE was from the ghetto. He was singing as an outsider looking on. Telling the story of people in it. Sheesh.

@gettheflickoverhere I agree with you on the Eminem thing for the most part.. but I think people forget the ghetto isn't all black people, although thats how everyone veiws this song as.. The ghetto is real life.. whites, blacks, hispanics, indians, middle eastern, asians of all decents, and more grow up in ghettos too.. This is a song about the struggle of life more so than race thing and I hope people see it like that.

@tyler1245789 The fact that you had to point out an obvious typo, shows how you know you lost and have nothing to defend yourself with. Also learn to use quotation marks and some punctuation. I don't expect you to use it right. Just use it. Not even using a period between sentences is retarded.
@tyler1245789 I'm not a troll, and you started the shit yourself by posting a retarded sign, telling everybody to shut up. If you wanted people to shut up, you should have shut up yourself.
@tyler1245789 Why do you tell me to leave it alone? Why don't you leave it alone yourself? Must you have the last word? It seems that you are the one who can't leave it alone.

2 - I'm not a troll. You act like a troll though, telling everybody to shut up, and calling me names all the time. However, I think you are just plain stupid.

It appears to me, based on recent transcription of Elvis songs, the guitar player was not one his regulars - the style is almost classical-- and well-executed. Its a little unusual to have an acoustic player note out from the bar position--- b flat major, rolling from the root, 5th, then sort of trilling the major third to the fourth---working back to the fifth and root-- creates a haunting background for these somber lyrics. --- one of Elvis' best drawing from his deepest roots.
