So what power is this kicking out? It does seem quicker than my stage1 lpt, video attached... love these motors... ps. dont fancy being the camera man in the last shot., eeek.
I bought a saab 9-5 and it blew up the next day so not too reliable. The turbos go after 100,000miles and they have sludging problems. I think they are shit up to 2002 but nice in other ways and has good pefomance and a nice inteior and they look prity cool too.
I see Saab 95's as old mens cars, having driven quite a few (Company cars not by choice) they are soggy and dull to drive with bland interiors. Observers are conned by the swedish exclusivety of them, this is an illusion dont be fooled. @MrTR500 Correct ! you got that spot on, if i were spending my own money i would buy a Honda every time, not because i am loyal to the brand but because Hondas are reliable, i dont give a stuff about badge snobbery. My Dad drives a 2005 Saab 9-5 aero 250bhp. Zero problems since he bought it in 2006. I hear nothing but praise for the 9-5s reliability. Go to parkers.co.uk. In their words "saabs rarely go wrong" I think i'll take their opinion over yours.
Honda might be reliable, but any real car lover does not buy a car for reliability.
Hell i currently drive a 99 megane. You'd think being french it would be breaking down every journey? Nope solid!
Yes, google it. Very fast, in fact there is a video on here of it on the autobahn, first it kicks an M3s arse and then shows it driving up to about 280kmh! must watch
This isn't very fast at all I was expecting this to fly its quick compared to other Saab's but my XR8 ute with 339HP at the wheels and would smash this. Also cost far less to build and maintain.
@hjalmeeen1 LOL not at all my dad had a 1993 9000 CS that got 3 hits in the rear end where the other cars were written off and it still had the original rear bumper.
My XR8 took a hit in the rear at 40km/h and I had to replace the whole tub.
Saabs are very safe and are great value for money when purchasing one a couple of years old. They're great and comfy to drive but they aren't really what I would call a performance car.
Since GM has owned them they haven't really done anything with saabs.
Faster than a 911 40-70..........Last time I looked a 911 was a performance car?I bet your ute cannot boast the same? Probably down to its not so very revvy engine and huge kerb weight..........
This thing is fast, I just borrowed me dads for a week, and me thinks he will recieve a speeding fine, the police had the "big blue" gun on me for a around 600 metres, before and after ... This car is like giving a commercial pilot a fighter-jet and tell him to go "slow" ... that just wouldnea happen .. Its faster than a 911 Turbo from 60 -110 ..... Ive handed it back before I get a driving ban ;-)
I had a Saab 9-5 HOT Aero (230bhp version) and miss the great turbo-acceleration between 40mph and about 110mph, which I'm sure was quicker than the car I traded it for (BMW 540i sport 6-speed manual, 4.4l engine, 286bhp). BMW better car (just) but Saab designed for real-world acceleration, and will keep up with just about anything to around 100mph. How often does anyone go above that sort of speed nowadays with all the speed-traps around? Handling a bit under-steery, but decent and safe.
proud saab owner! even tho they can be a pain in the ass sometimes. i got a 99 9-5 lpt. which is the non - aero, i love my saab i actually heard its more tuner friendly compared to the aero
i'm thinking of buying a saab 9-5 but find the line up really confusing. they have so many different 2.3 turbos, some producing about 185 hp and others about 250 (HOT aero???), i'm sure ill end up buying something wrong.
im after a HOT aero but i think some are 230hp and some 250hp... confusing.
Did you misunderstand me? My comment was not against Saabs in any way. All I said was that most people can't tell a stock Saab from a tuned one just by looking at it. And there are plenty of Saabs with 150 or less hp. I didn't say which Saab I meant, did I? Saab93V3ctor, the internet flamer -_-
The swedish government is holding off b/c if it does buy Saab, then it will end up w/a bunch of contractual agreements w/GM that will continue to cripple Saab.
If they let Saab go bankrupt, and then buy, Saab will once again be allowed to blossom.
I sure hope not, poor GM got stuck with them, good money they good of spent keeping Pontiac! And making a Firebird again! I would take a Mustang GT over any saab even if its faster, Saabs look trashy.....
I agree with andy, I'm on my third and learned some valuable lessons on maintenance etc the hard way..saab central is the place to go, there are some really dedicated saab folks out there & that site is where it's at.

@SHEGOTADONKKK check out saabnet.com and look up saab classifieds. Lots of good cars on there. I have 3 saabs in the family 94' 9000 cse, 03' 95 arc, 09' 95 aero.
@SHEGOTADONKKK I owna 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero, cosmic blue exterior tan interior, 5 speed. This was my first saab purchase. I was hesitant at first but have not paid for repairs beyond tires, and oil changes since purchasing the car 15K miles ago. very powerful c ar, LOVES to exceed 110mph and will very easily hit the legal speed limit. Extremely safe vehicle also. only downside... not made in an AWD version. recommend this car
You probably know more about the subject than me but
If the GT-17 is fitted to the B205L then yes that one - but it died due to sludge caused by a bad engine layout imo. As previously stated, the sump gets boiled by the exhaust - having the pickup screen and sump flushed at 25k and 50k should have solved this problem...
I seriously doubt the 'stronger' Aero / Viggen turbos would've stood up to basic oil starvation.
yeah you had the gt-17. your right oil starvation would f**k any turbo really.lol im just saying that it was prolly near death anyway and the oil starvation just finished it off. did you ever do the pcv update? just curious. but yeah if you dropped the sump, used full synthetic oil every 3-5k, and used the proper oil filter, then you shouldn't have had oil starvation problems. sorry to hear if did though.
Yeah, I had the breather and oil trap mod thingee done quite earlier, though as you say the turbo could have been weakened.
If I'm honest Oil changes every 5-10k, averagely around 8k I'd say. Always Full syn - not excessive by any stretch.... have you seen the ridiculous service intervals on the new models!?
18k between oil changes!
This whole oil sludge thing is not just Saab either: it's a problem across all manufacturers and these extended service intervals aren't going to help.
how is trionic 7 a bad design? its a very complex impressive ecu. what turbo do you have? if it was the gt-17 then having it blow around 75K is not uncommon at all. their weak little turbos that rarely make it past 100k...
The tachometer (revolutions per minute - RPMs), or as you put it as the "rev gauge" is on the left and turbo boost gauge (which says "turbo" below it) is on the right. A boost gauge is a pressure gauge that indicates turbocharger pressure.
Turbochargers are engine driven air compressors (exhaust driven to be exact) and provide varying levels of boost according to engine rpm, load etc. Quite often there is a power band within a given range of available boost pressure and it is an aid to performance driving to be aware of when that power band is being approached, in the same way a driver wants to be aware of engine rpm.
@andy28277 You should be careful when you say, "engine driven." Technically a super charger is engine driven as it runs off a belt (or chain) off the engine where a turbo is technically "exhaust driven" because it uses the exhaust gasses from the engine to spin the turbine to force air through.
The boost gauge is upper right - you can see the turbo boost going from white to red when shifting or taking the foot off the gas. Not much turbo lag on the 9-5 at all, though. You can also see the tach on the left is not always redline upon shifts or just hitting the gas.
'04 and above is very reliable, though I'm not big on the '06 facelift. Pre-'04 you should have all service records with full synthetic oil changes as sludge is a concern, but you can easily solve that issue by updating to the PCV#6 for about $200 and dropping the sump. The Aero has a stronger turbo that will not fail on you, unlike the non-Aero 9-5's. Otherwise, wear and tear parts are expensive as BMW and Benz, but Saab is an easy DIY car with inexpensive after market parts all over the web.
yeah man thats the shit lol. my dad has a 2000reg 2.3lpt se. took it to abbott racing about a month ago got an ecu upgrade hybrid turbo higher boost setting dump valve and sport exhaust its now rated at about 255 horsepower. same power as aero but it delivers FULL tourque at 2000rpm its insane at low revs beat the shit out of an aero anyday raced fucking evo's on bypass up to 145 just like that lol. and its all with heated and cooled leather seat and a smooth ride which can 5 peeps and a dog.
Turn of that crappy music next time so we can hear the engine...

naireland 3 years ago
The boost gauge is upper right - you can see the turbo boost going from white to red when shifting or taking the foot off the gas. Not much turbo lag on the 9-5 at all, though. You can also see the tach on the left is not always redline upon shifts or just hitting the gas.

I'm thinking of buy one of these. What is your opinion how reliable are these cars? Especially the Saab 9-5 Aero. What's your experience with yours?
kicsirepi46 3 years ago
'04 and above is very reliable, though I'm not big on the '06 facelift. Pre-'04 you should have all service records with full synthetic oil changes as sludge is a concern, but you can easily solve that issue by updating to the PCV#6 for about $200 and dropping the sump. The Aero has a stronger turbo that will not fail on you, unlike the non-Aero 9-5's. Otherwise, wear and tear parts are expensive as BMW and Benz, but Saab is an easy DIY car with inexpensive after market parts all over the web.
