hey there im starting to clicker train my umbrella cockatoo! I so far im working on the CLICK + TREAT! My next step is target! after target where i go from there? what i use the target for?
@vidgirl4444 Hey, Vidgirl, thanks for stopping by, and sorry I took SO long to reply. I'm not a real clicker training expert, but I think once they target the stick you can move it to wherever you want them to be. I did that, then moved on to an object she can lift, like a paper clip. There are some good books, and forum about clicker training. If you Google Birdclick, I think that's the name of one. I've been neglecting Shemesh's training lately, I'm afraid.
@ShemeshandMom hi there thanks so much. i have done target with my birds. :) but i also have been busy traning my new pup that i have not had much time traning my birds. But i will this week :)
AFAIK, all birds have great color *perception*; by discrimination, I mean her ability to choose a color based on cues.
But if I may make an unsolicited observation. When you're asking for a specific color, you talk a lot, which may be interefering with her ability to learn/pick up on the cue.
Rather than say "pink!"... you say "give me the pink paper clip, can I have the pink one please, nope that's green, try again, give me a pink one"...which might just sound like a lot of noise to her.
Very good points, 3ponymous! Thanks a lot for the constructive comments. We've slacked off of training, but when I return to it I will try gabbing less (which is mainly to entertain myself, I admit!)
He's so cute, could u tell me where u got the clicker

Very impressive! Color discrimination is tough. Nice job!

Thank you. Her color perception seems good, but I'm not so sure she makes the connection between the color and its name.

Until she's got the cue down pat, it's really best to keep the cues very simple and short, or you risk confusing the animal with way too much input.
