@xPokemonPlayerx yup. It's because of Goku's Japanese voice that people prefer the English version of DBZ despite the fact that the scripts and dialogue in dubbed DBZ are terrible. Goku's Japanese voice is an instant turn off for a narrow minded person. Even if you get used to it, that voice coming from villains or badass people like Turles and Bardock just sounds odd.

Masako Nozawa is one of the most talented seiyuu's ever. She has a unique voice, and has a lot of passion and emotion in all of her roles. Sonny Straight just falls short in comparison. Sure he has the right voice, but his acting just comes off goofy and forced which really takes a lot of the weight scenes like this had.

My only complaint concerning the Japanese voice acting is Bardock's voice. I actually like Masako Nozawa as Goku (a lot better than Sean Schemmel, at least), but I think Bardock needed to have a deeper voice.

Agreed. Nozawa's voice fits Goku's personality because he's basically a happy go lucky hillbilly whereas Bardock is some evil badass. Should have given him Raditz voice because it was fucking awesome in the Japanese version.

Masako Nozawa is Bardock because Toei is lazy (which they are notorious for) and they didn't want to pay Nozawa for just Goku's three lines.

I wouldn't mind the English dub so much if they didn't actually ALTER the dialogue! That should be rule No. 1 about dubbing: Don't change what they're actually saying. But they do. The English voices add whole sections of dialogue that aren't said in the original Japanese. It actually changes the storyline. Not cool.

For example in the Japanese version Frieza says lots of really scary and evil sounding things that makes him really feel like a terrifying, evil and cruel monster that cant be stopped and also made him sound like a sophisticated noble but in the English dub they made him say lots of silly and stupid things that made people think he sounds gay.

@masterjake75 I know what you mean. Bardock's personality differed greatly in Japanese and English. The English dub tried to make him more heroic and noble, most exemplified by his thank you message to Goku.

Whereas, he's actually a ruthless warrior all the way through and demands Goku avenge the Saiyan race and his death. It wasn't necessary to make him kinder because pretty much everyone is rooting for the underdog in the situations Bardock is placed in.

@callxmexac U just gotta love the Jap version's voices, some of the most legendary actors/actress with real TALENTS. I started off watchin with Eng Dub..some talentless junks with non-existant voice acting ..they just ruin the characterizations..Bardock's voice in Jap Version is in fact, excellent with soul as well as intensity..Masako Nozawa gave a cold-blooded killer instincts with saiyan cockyness..its a world knwn fact that DBZ dub is the worst in the world with lame one- liners, etc..

@Thilieph1 Well the english dub for the bardock movie was terrible. Everything from the voices(except the main characters: bardock, frieza, etc...) down to the script was down right atrocious. They made them babble during silent lines, they pointed out the obvious in the scenes, they were too quiet during the space fight when it should sound like a battlefield like the japanese version. But, I still like the eng version of dbz better, but not this one.

@Thilieph1 I'm not saying I like everything about the dub. They did make a lot of mistakes but yet have fitting voice actors. I really can't see another voice actor for goku or krillin. That's why I was hoping they would remaster dbz over again instead of Kai. While Masako Nozawa is a great voice actor, I still believe it was stupid for her to continue to play goku and his family. I understand that she was very popular, but that's what they had gohan and other kids for.

Let me rephrase my other comment. This special was the creation of the character of Bardock, but I fucking know it's canon. I was trying to explain to another user that this wasn't based directly from the manga, but that Torriyama added a reference to this specific special into the manga making sure it's known as manga canon. Filler based on the MOIVES is the only thing in the anime that can't be canon in the anime, cause they can't be fit into continuity. But there is lots of canon filler.

@TerpaX89 ummm this is bardock story regardless of his character being int he manga... its canon no matter how you put it... it still happened and this is the story of bardock, same with the trunks movie thats canon as well... only movies and GT are alternate realities, they happened in another sense but not to the main storyline in db and dbz... filler is an exception to the animated version of the story though, and has become a part of its own official experience within the anime.

Even the Japanese gave them a lot of credit because they felt that the entire cast was done quite well and they conveyed the characters nicely. Everyone spoke the way they should and there's nothing stereotypical or foolish about that. Just great and solid voice acting.

Nah maybe Bardock but the rest of the Japanese DBZ voices are some of the best and most respected voice actors in all of anime (Freeza, Vegeta, Cell, Trunks, Kuririn, Yamucha, etc). I can speak English and Japanese and IMO there's a lot more emotion in the Japanese version. English version is good but it seems kinda like a pro wrestling parody version of DBZ instead of the actual DBZ.

This is actually the best DBZ movie. Same with Future Trunks special. They actually develop characters and crucial parts of the story that didn't get much attention in the series. The rest of the movies are just recycled crap.
