  • its fair to mention that the qashqai/uality is buit here plus the Nubira was designed here

  • Any competent artist can draw a good looking car. Turning it into reality takes a bit more.

  • I am america so i would want to drive american it should be the same in for you limeys surely you want to drive a british such as rover but limeys prefer to drive toyotas and stuff and they wonder why volume automobile manufacturers have gone down the shithole

  • @hamster700 If you could speak reasonable English, then I'd take you seriously, but as you sound like a demented Iraki, I can't...

  • haha i dont count, i drive a reliant rebel, still british :) lol

  • name another manufacturer that can squeeze 103bhp out of a n/a 1.4 petrol engine

  • Sad as we all know Rover Triumph etc etc built some world beating cars and were the first with so many inovations yet we didn't back the idiology and let the Unions crucify the firm... Even the much maligned TR7 from the seventies was let down by them as you look around today it seems it really was the shape of things to come with it's swage lines. and comfortable sports cars... all the same excellent video on missed oppurtunities and our own Brit bashing

  • I've owned MG's and Rovers - brilliant cars. My ZT-T was probably the best car I'll ever own. I was upset when they went under, but not half as much as when I saw Clarkson hosting 'Have I got news for You' that week, guffawing away at MGR's collapse.

2 problems though - the P4 seemed more interested in ludicrous fantasy projects like the V8 and SV, and, more importantly, they didn't have any mates in the government. Witness Mandelson and Jaguar. He couldn't stop throwing money at them!

  • I have owned Minis,Maxis and Rovers. My latest a Rover 45 is brilliant quiet comfortable and very well built 96000 faultless miles. Its easy to blurt out Rovers are crap. In the seventies when loads of people ran out and bought Datsuns proclaiming they had to buy Japanese to get a decent car they very quickly all collapsed in a pile of rust!

Many people in this country rubbished Rover . Clarkson, when he heard Rover had gone and all its workforce thrown on the scrapheap said "GOOD"

  • It is also important to remember the periods between late 90s-2000 were dominated by a strong pound, which was not curtailed by the Government. This means, British Products cost more in the domestic market, and abroad. Rovers would come at full price, where as cars like BMWs or Peaugeots would be weaker, and import sales increase as you get more (foreign) things to the pound, like wise, in export markets, people buy non British as they dont want to spend extra to purchase and match the pound.

  • It is a shame that they are gone. But you have to ask why did the British public get the love affair with the Euro boxes and Jap crates? Easy, the late '70's and early 80's. Britain was in turmoil, 3 day working week and car manufacturers on strike more often that in the plant. Shoddy workmanship and unreliability of the cars produced forced the public to look elsewhere. That's when the Euro and Jap cars sales increased. Better engineered, better workmanship, reliable and value for money..

  • Why does the EU allow the French government to subsidise French car manufacturers yet it totally forbid the British government to do the same here.......double standards. I never buy anything French and always buy British where I can, although I haven't a clue what to do when I have to replace my MG ZR!

  • very well put as a ex MG ROVER WORKER would like to thank for the support that ppl had for us as was shown when ppl came LOWHILL LANE LONGBRIDGE to show their support from all over. and still goes on again thanks .......

  • Well if you want any of these cars i'm sure the chinese at Nanjiing motors will sell you one, at a cheaper price too and just as badly put together, most of those cars looked terrible as well. Can't really blame the british public, if you make shit cars no one will buy them simple as. I almost bought a MG ZR once but it was already a 20 year old design, i only even considered the MG cos' it was british but it was about the same price as the new mini cooper and i wanted a good car

  • An absolute and utter disgrace to have lost MGR,could you imagine the French saying,au revoir to Renault, the German's shouting Auf wiedersehen to VW or the Italian's saying ciao to Fiat,no of course not it just wouldn't happen.

Blair sat back and let MGR die no real cash support was given while new buyers were found (SAIC/Nanjing/Magma Holdings/SAIPA and Sir Richard Branson all had expressed an interest) the amount needed was pitifuly little when compared to that used to keep the banks afloat.

  • I own a Rover 25 and I absolutely love that car. But if you ask me the Rover 75 effectively symbolises MG Rover from 1999-2005, for me it's a car I'm planning to get one day, personally I absolutely sucks that Rover collapsed and now all the designs and rights etc are owned by overseas companies. Really I would love to see Rovers and MGs turning out of Longbridge today on 60 plates, but it's just a sad thing I guess

  • I think that a part of the blame had to lie with Rover's pricing and failure to release new models. I had a 1998 Rover 414i (the cylinder head gasket went twice - thanks K Series!), which was a little bigger than a Astra and Escort but was priced to compete with the Vectra and Mondeo. The 200, while excellent against the Fiesta or Corsa were priced in the Astra/Escort bracket. The 25/45/MG updates were little more than redecoration, and even the later models weren't significantly different

  • I think the designer was living next door to a guy who kept hiring Vauxhalls.

The British Public are indeed overfond of foreign cars but actually did buy loads of Rovers (look how many are on the road). I have 2 rovers. The company were turned over by BMW and let down by the labour gov. NOT the public.

  • Sincerely agree, although there were some quality issues and some cars badly placed to appeal to the strong market sectors,in all, it was good to see a British brand in the mainstream car market, (Rover est. 1904 as a car maker) nowadays 'patriotism' seems to only go as far as sticking a 99p England flag on the top of your car when the footies on...

  • The Labour party should hang there heads in shame in letting MG Rover go bust.so much for them being the scialist party of the working man, instead they relied on the banks and finance in the city for prosperity and boy did that fail.We must have manufacturing in this country which has full british backing and we must export.

    Thanks BLAIR AND BROWN.

  • they should of launched these they would of saved the company! I would of bought so many of these cars!

  • i could not agree more with the closing statement.

British people buy from abroad and then moan about rising unemployment and loss of trades.

  • its partly our fault - we didnt want to buy rovers for the simple reason the designs of the cars were outdated compared to renault and even fucking seat for christ sakes!

BMW were the other party in blame - they bought rover for one reason and one reason only; they wanted the mini

  • Rovers from 90's on were good, some issues but as good as any mass market european car except GM Opel and VW. The blame for Rovers demise lays with bad management and disastrous quality in the late 60's through to mid 80's. No car company could recover from that mess. Skoda were a laugh until VW took over and started doing things properly. They could have fixed Rover but BMW only know the top end of the market and Rover needed to sell into mid market: competing with Peugeot, Renault and Fiat.

  • Very true in that last point you make. Rover needed volume selling small to mid size cars with BMW in executive and Rollers at the top. There was some confusion over the 400 and what exactly it was trying to do/be and the R30 was needed so BMW could help rover wind down sales on the 600s and 800s which were rivals to the 3 series and the 5 series and turn Rover into a alternative brand in volume smaller models.

  • who sing this song?

  • Luther Vandross.

    The Impossible Dream..

  • Really nice and sad video... In Spain we love English cars.. It is a pity

  • Just makes you wonder what other potential world-beaters Rover could have produced had they had enough funds to design, develop & produce them?

    Dave

  • one more thing, this headgasket thing early k-series engines did have a fault but if you do your homework youll see that it was an amazing lightweight engine 15 years ahead of its time, toyota bmw and a number of other manufactures have tried to emulate it and failed miserably you cant beat british engineering just look at F1 all the top designers engineers etc nearly all brits

  • all british people drive bmw or jap cars what a load of rubbish, i got a 216 gti for my first car and 10 years on im still driving rovers, this is the thing if you drive one you love it if you listen to people who dont know sh*t and slag them down having never driven one then you get a bmw cos thats a cool car even if it looks like an old ladies asshole

  • Rovee Wrong Way!

  • okey rover 75 men off you love the 75 bhat lets

thr rover thident have a market old pipel bat toyotas kids bye bmw audis mersedes not rovers they ar agli bad on cool cars that whay no whan but a rover and thats whay it god onder and 1 more thing

all britis pipel drive germen and japanis cars not rovers

  • Blaming the British public for it but the reason why people bought from the Germans, French, Japs & Koreans was because of the major headgasket trouble on Rovers. I mean I wouldn't want a car that blows up more often than the cambelts working life. Rover couldn't be arsed to put it right on the K-series but the wordspread about it & its cost them a loss of customers very dearly.

  • What a huge shame, some of those cars look good too..

  • Nice tribute and I agree with the statement at the end too. The 55 however, under the Phoenix administration was far more likely to be a rebadged Proton Gen 2, following suit from their cheaply produced Tata/City Rover solition for a mini replacement lol

Honestly I think BMW have alot to answer for, Mini would have regenerated public interest in Rover cars and if BMW had not clawed Rover from BAE and Honda, their collaboration with Honda may today have produced some very exciting MG's

  • How the hell does the 55 look like a GEN2!!!!!

More like Jaguar stole thesd plans 4 the XF ?

    im Right.

  • The problem with MGR was that,if The british public where to blame

Then why was the British Goverment saying we need the money for WAR in iraq, So my point is if the British people didnt care why did the goverment feel they had to explain to a not very bothered British peoples.Well The British people where extremely pissed of with them cockfaces! And thats why the Goverment was bricking it!!MGR ARE DEAD AND ITS BMW,CHINESE AUTOMOTIVE-WORKS THE BRITISH GOVERMENTS FAULT! 100 years Gone.

  • 1000s lost their jobs. Over the last 50 years the quality of British cars suffered because of short term thinking of the managers (bean counters). The foreigen manufactures know the skill of the British engineers and craftpersons and employed them to improved their products. The British government was too busy claiming for their various houses to care about concepts like manufacturing. I suppose we should be greatful we at least have some good memories from the past.

  • The British Public remained faithful to Rover and MG till the last! Poor management and squandering of funds on logo re designs all did damage and the `rape` of Rover/MG by BMW for the mini just left her down but hobbling on till she was gone.

  • Video was good, but at the end that BIG lie! The British Public did not destroy MG Rover. It was the Goverment fault for not funding car company's like MGR and they still don't care about British car's today because Vauxhall would not be going down the gutter if that was so. Also I blame the Chinese for stealing MGR and the company I blame the most is BMW or selling the car's when thing's looked a little down.

  • Very true, these days the gov don't car about car firms. BL was starting to be killed off in 1988, because the government just wanted to keep their pride for the sake of our British industry!

  • British Car Industry i mean.. (:

  • Great tribute, great vid, I have a Rover 75 :) Wouldn't swap it for any merc BMW or any other common car, Rovers had the soul which Mercs BMs and other lack, lets just hope Jaguar won't go down.

  • Haha, says someone who types like a twelve-year-old. This negative opinion in Britain of our own cars goes no way in helping our economy. We have none left to sell to other countries, yet we buy everything in from them. On top of this, MG Rover had terrible management since the take-over in the new millennium. Instead of wasting money and time on the MG SV, Tata Indica and various race events, they should have looked at introducing brand new models, not the same ones as in 1996!

  • honestly though look at beemaz, mercz n porsches.........omg sexc n original, even the 80's benzes n beemas luk more sxc then a brand spankin new rover!!! haa haa

  • german cars r thebest in the world, y wud any 1 want to spend money on a load of crap like rover , even them concept models look shyt , half of them copys of other cars, not one of them attractive at all , rover deserve 2 b dead!!!

  • i know german cars are the best like BMW but Rover was not crap, it made a lot of good cars

  • well let's exclude out Opel/Vauxhall.

  • Mercedes-Benz are way better than BMW. BMW believe it or not are in money troubles of there own.

  • BMW are actually way better than Mercedes-Benz. You are forgetting the Legend that was the E30 3 Series, looked so much better than the late 80's early 90's Mercs!

  • cock end

  • good video but not liking how you blame the british public. UK was by far the biggest market for MG Rover throughtout it's whole life. It wasn't becuase British people bought too many foreign cars that was the problem. it was because while these companies diversified into the UK market, MG Rover didn't seem to look beyond our borders and was never really marketed well enough abroad.

  • Is it me, or is everything that is in that video resemble a Renault?

1:42 - New laguna from the back

    2:51 - Vaxuahll Vectra front

    3:15 - Renault Megane?

    3:55 - New 08 Fiesta Front!

    4:33 - Renault Safrane

Me thinks anyway...good video though, shows what the british can think up on a good day :p

    JT

  • I saw some of them of them were patch with Chinese license plate and it is ShangHai. I believe some people in China want these stuff come out from either SAIC or NAC-MG. And should the Rover 45 be replaced by the car from project W2 (as SAIC 550 now)? But that may take years.... any one wanna join my trip to the parallel universe which MG-Rover did not gone bankrupt? (Just joking...)

  • FUGLY

  • I have a 75 which is the best car I've ever owned , before all you knockers of Rover reply just take a look at the Auto Express Top 100 cars for 2008. Very sad bmw pulled out as the 75 & ZT show just what superb cars Rover group could make with proper investment.

  • yeah and look at the mg zt reliability its quite impressive

  • They wasted far to much money on stupid projects like the MG SV. Yes it was a supercar but there wasn't enough demand for it. They could of invested the money in developing a new car for the general public. That would of kept them afloat.

  • Had Rover been given the investment they would have really cleaned up with the RD-60.

  • The resion mg rover went bust was because the number of cars made was far too high for the demand out there . The new owners of Rover have plans to make these models . British buyers hate Korean cars because they are cheaply made .

  • Really, I drive one (a 75 CDTi). It is a fine car. On a par with the new Golf GT TDI Hire car I recently drove.

  • What could HAVE been. Not OF.

  • Does it really matter how it's reads the whole point is the video which you seem to of missed totally, you seem more interested in pulling my grammar apart.

Are you an english teacher or someone who just doesn't get out much.

  • to you it may not matter - but if you want to be taken seriously and for your views to have real credibility, it is good to be able to speak and write correctly - after all, none of us would want a new MG 'wivt them daws not hung proper', would we?

  • the point of the video is not my bad grammar or spelling but what the british public have lost because of the fact we keep buying crap euro boxes

  • Its is a great great shame, very sad.The mistake was selling to BMW and not Honda.Had it sold to Honda Iam pretty damn sure Rover's would still be being made in Birmingham.

  • @70Mack

    Totally agree!

Honda are now a global organization with factories all around the world.

Honda seem to be very well run and are always aiming to expand rather than close factories.

Remember the Honda built Rovers of the past, quite a good car!

  • @OzzInter Your not wrong my friend, BMW just wanted the Mini and Landrover tech

  • @70Mack i guess they sold to BMW because it was German. From the same continent. Who would dare to sell it to a foreign company on another continent? but in the end they were tricked by the chinese.....

  • @mhorsburgh1 no offense ,your english is terrible

  • Some smart designs in there that look like a lot of recent models that are out at the moment, the New Mondeo, the BMW 1 Series, SEAT Leon and the Skoda Fabia !!!

As for the closing comments, ROVER is defunct because it was Dumped by BWM with no resouces to build new models only re-hash old ones, the british public bought loads of Rovers and MG's, just look arround you on the roads !!!

I own a 25, not the best car in the world but sturdy and reliable !!!

  • Why did the Brits not buy Rover? Why wasn't the entire fleet of police cars sourced from Rover? Why didn't all poloticians use Rover's as their cars? Why didn't driving schools like BSM and AA use Rovers? Asking these questions is a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. I know this response os going to be met with alot of negativity, but the British public voted for the demise of MG Rover by purchasing other brands like myself. There has always been alot better out there.

  • Rover 25 45 offer far better performance, and equipment then say the same citroen saxo or vauxhall corsa or ford fiesta.

the sad thing is the british public love to buy french bread bins french vans with windows in and call it an mpv wood trim chrome and v6 refinement and buying british just isn't important anymore to anyone this saddens me but we need it for british jobs and industry.

  • @mhorsburgh1 K series engine head gasket failure, KV6 piston liners working loose and general crapness of anything that came from MGR. People bought other brands simply because they didn't want a car that fell apart 30 seconds after it left the forecourt, and was worth more than 10p at trade in time. You wont like this, but Rovers were crap, and at least 10 years behind the competition. It all went wrong when the links with Honda were cut. That was the beginning of the end.

  • Big questions; I think anyone claiming to know the answer probably doesn't. My view is, as ever, that there are many reasons and not all of them easy to fathom. In response to 'why wont Brits buy British' the answer is 'they do' - the Astra's coming out of Ellesmere Port, Honda's from Swindon, Nissan's from Sunderland (etc. point made) are all world-leading cars and all make a profit for their parent companies. Look to the top of the hierarchy - the 25 and 45 were 1 or 2 generations behind.

  • ...very nice!!!

  • R.I.P rover
