This is absolutely remarkable. I've always loved the power hidden within taiko drums. I've always wanted to get one. Now, after seeing this, I may just manage to get one within the month. Absolutely stunning.
@LionEntity Depends on what you're looking for. Professional groups like Tao and Kodo produce high-quality DVDs. If you're looking for training materials, some groups like Tamashii NZ can provide full teaching modules for schools - but taiko is best learned from a sensei or as part of a performing group.
when i feel the sound waves reverberate through my body, the feeling is so soothing. no idea why, it just is. that is why i love aisan percussion. they know how to soothe.
@Mundicantus So true! Just saw one again today - it really is incredible in person! A few years back I did a one day workshop and it was really a lot of fun to bang on drums for a few hours! It can get really intense, especially when everyone is moving together in unison! :)
@Irion It's even more amazing to watch Taiko in person. Every beat makes your heart stop. It's pretty amazing. So much power yet elegance behind it. I luckily have several friends who've grown up playing it and allow me to come to their concerts. :D
Yes, no doubt about watching Taiko in person must be marvellous. Maybe someday i could do it too, at the moment i only can afford watching them by video hehe.
I'm music composer, and lately i'm trying to make Taiko Drums and asian style tracks too, but i can't find Taiko drum hits for free on the net (i don't have money, hehe) but well, i'm trying my best.
@mr2wari Compared to the bagpipes and the snare drum I reckon you would shat bricks if you hear this being played by a military unit headed towards you
These guys were great! I can just imagine how performances were like in traditional feudal times in Japan. Must have been so amazingly performed even in those times.
I heard this kind of music many years ago and loved it I know nothing of it`s history or technicalities,I am completely ignorant of anything about it,,,, Buuuut I know I absolutely love it all of it.. That`s it.!!
@ZigZagnut357 Smaller sticks are used for the shime; easier for finer control of the instrument and less chance of damaging the skin. However we also change positions often between different drum types, so performers often carry several different types of bachi. Smallest for shime, medium for Chu-daiko, largest for O-daiko.
It's a spiritual thing. Taiko to me is the sound of a warrior and the beat of the drums makes your ki stronger with each beat. It pumps you up so much. Adrenaline and endorphins mix and you feel like you can take on the world.
Omgomgomg for the upcoming season of marching band we're playin something like this the show is called the last samuri. I cant wait! Im such a geek lol
its a guy on youtube that plays taiko drum master with two drums.... and he is REALLY REALLY REALLY SKILLED O.O
his name escapes me but i bet he can do that with two drums...... lol he is super skilled not as much as them but still he cirss-crossed and flipped his sticks while playing 2 drums!
@mikew7 You say you're unsure of the climax's origins. Maybe I can clear it up for you. The movements and rhythm are almost identical to the open domain song called "hachijo". Hope that helps.
(there are tons of versions of this song, but if you're interested, northwest taiko's version looks pretty similar to yours)
Some of the rhythms played here are from YATAI BAYASHI and some are obviously from MIYAKE DAIKO. However I can't identify the rhythm sequences at the climax and ending of this piece. Are they derived from another source too or did the Haere Mai group create them? Just curious...
@NCTaikoDrumboy We refer to that as the Miyake Chorus. Miyake is typically played with a series of solos, and ends with the Chorus played all-together. Since this was a mashup of two songs the solos were cut. Unfortunately I can't trace the origins of that part; but it was either created by our teachers' original group IPC Kodama, or it may have been brought to Kodama from japan at some point in its history (Happy anniversary Kodama! 20 years this September)
@mikew7 I see. Well at any rate, it's an interesting blending of rhythms from different sources. Our group has done similar things in the past as well, incorporating rhythm sequences from various origins that we thought were neat or catchy. BTW, our group goes under the name of Triangle Taiko of North Carolina and I'm one of the founding members. We also have our own webpage here at YouTube. We'll be celebrating our tenth anniversary on January 20, 2012!
@xEverAfter It's "so-re". Our teachers Saho & Midori said that it does not translate as a word, it is simply a kakegoe [a verbal cue that the rhythm is about to change].
I remember when my one of my Sensei's learned Taiko Drumming, and taught a bunch of the other students at my dojo. We'd be doing class, being pumped by them practicing in the back room.
@bodiza420 Hi Bodiza, no I don't think there's any relation but I know the Kodo song you are talking about. The rhythm you're hearing is a well-known traditional Japanese song from Chichibu; it's very possible Kodo was using elements of that song in the Rising Sun intro as well (love that intro; great visuals too...)
@r0ck0n360 In Arvada (Denver), there is a well known group called One World Taiko that was the official team at Disney Epcott for 4 years. There is also a Childrens group in Ft. Collins named Shinboku Taiko, but I do not have any contact info for them.
@xX0Jota0Xx They're shouting "so-re!" which literally means "that" but accented differently, I guess roughly you can compare it to somebody shouting "c'mon" during a performance.
