  • AWWW SUCH SEXY SAX

  • A great player & a nice guy as well!

  • I am just happy that there is a Buddy and Butch to listen to. Why not enjoy them both?

  • To all the musical illiterates who populate this blog....mentioning Butch Miles in the same breath with Buddy is the height of ignorance and raging stupidity.

Buddy's body of work entitles Butch to lick the perspiration off Buddy's Ball Sack.

  • i met this guy in person, this guy, i'll tell yah, he is really fun to be around!

  • Butch is an amazing drummer and a very sweet person. One of my idols since I heard him on the "Basie Big Band" album from 1975. He had just gotten the gig with Basie through Buddy Rich´s recommendation and one of the tracks on the album is "Wind machine". Before that he was Mel Thorme´s drummer. Butch´s playing has gotten slightly more mellow through the years as happens with many drummers. Butch belongs at the top of the list of big band drummers!

  • I have enough hw to do for physical chemistry; I dont have time to do YT hw too.

  • Really? This is too slow.

  • @osborl12 the original basie chart is much slower than this..do your homework.

  • That's sweet!!!

  • At 3.21...to stroke gently... MMMMMhhhhhhh!!!

  • Very sad how the dirty aspects of the music biz have polluted every single corner of it -even drumming. You have this Buddy Rich Memorial Concerts featuring players who are known either for sheer technical prowess or because they are part of some famous Rock band but can't recognize a phrase of the Jazz idiom and are a shame to witness trying to drive a big band.

I will attend that event or buy the dvd if they ever invite REAL big band musicians. Mr. Butch Miles would be great on that bill.

  • @MusicLessonsComp Right you are! The Buddy Rich Memorial Concerts are a joke. 95% of the "drummers" playing with B's band have zero concept of swing or Jazz or Big band playing. It's a shame that Cathy is just doing everything she can to make a buck off B's name.

She should have had guys like Butch, Joe Morello, Donny Osborne, Ed Shaughnessy, Louie Bellson - Buddy's peers, if she wanted to do these concerts.

As they stand, they are a disgrace to Buddy's memory and Legend ~

  • @MarkR1957 An absolute disgrace, yes! Back when they did the first one I remember lots of young people going "Wow! Check out Louie Bellson!". Cathy could still run a decent business if at least she cared to feature ONE of the drummers that you mentioned every year, so that the wonderful legacy of Swing music that her father contributed to and, literally fought for, stood strong. But she's turned it into a variety show, such a shame.

  • Butch is so smooth. He makes it look easy and he looks like he is really enjoying himself. Please stop with the Buddy RIch comparisons. They are two totally different drummers. We all know Buddy was a maniac but that's what made him so great.

  • I don't understand... you see 2 monsters of any instrument and instantly you feel the necessity to compare them, come on!! who of as, mere mortals between this guys, can do a little of the things they do...? enjoy!!! the rest is shit

There is a distinct difference between Buddy + Butch.

    Namely...

Buddy was a bona fide GENIUS on his instrument.

If you believe Miles played with greater joy, drive and musicianship than Buddy...well, that level of ignorance remains forever an incurable disease.

  • the nutty professor?

just kidding, great drummer and yes would have gave Mr. Rich a run for his money

  • He's SO relaxed! I Love it!

  • I actually go to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and i'm a jazz drumset player in the jazz band there. I get to see Butch play a lot during the semester, mainly because I take drumset lessons from him and he also directed my jazz orchestra this past semester. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and one of the best jazz drummers of all time. Imagine getting to see stuff like in this video, but all the time. I'm truly blessed. Haha.

  • @drummermike6380

do you really take lessons from him?

    dayum

  • He's no Buddy clone. Buddy could have used a few tips from him. For one, how to really enjoy what you he was doing and not be so pissed when playing. His drums have better tone than Buddy's. I think Buddy smoked too much pot and ruined the type of joy Butch Miles exudes with while he played drums like Fred Astaire did with his dancing shoes. Elegance in action... Relaxed and never trying to outdo himself, like Buddy seemed driven to do too often.

  • @genemz5 yea, plus it seems like butch actually enjoys drumming...

  • @genemz5 buddy is the best drummer to drive a big band, butch is more laid back. to be honest, i like buddy's better, but it is a matter of opinion

  • @genemz5 Jazz isn't about lookin good, it's about soundin' good.

  • To me, he doesn't seem to be a "buddy" clone. I can see their play styles are clearly different. Both good (no, amazing), but also different from each other

  • that cymbal shit was crazy!

  • @tammilopa Yeah, I saw them in Plochingen on 15th March and even stood on stage with them, because i play guitar in the local big band. Butch Miles really is an amazing drummer. And like loujug1 already said, he always seems to smile and have a lot of fun. It's a great experience watching him.

  • I saw him together with dan barrets international swing party at pforzheim on friday ;)

  • Smooth and awesome drumming!

  • When I first saw Butch with the Basie band it was on TV and it wasn't just his drumming that caught my eye. I was struck by how dammed happy he always looked. Watching this video the same applies, every so often this huge smile appears, and his enjoyment makes me feel good. Great drummer.

As to being a Rich clone you could argue that since Buddy went back to 1921, ie before big bands, then most drummers were Rich clones. Also if you had to be called a clone then who better than Berrnard Rich.

  • Loujug said it ! Guy is still great.

  • Who cares what he's called by dimwits...the guy's a friggin dynamo..end of story.

  • Butch unfortunately has been maligned for being a Buddy clone. Admittedly he is. But I still accept him as still a great player.

  • 0:46 Trumpet enters early

  • yeah... but in time.

  • listen

    butch isn't a buddy clone.

  • Butch is so much like Buddy Rich, even the expression on his face.

  • His playing with Count Basie's band at the Montreux jazz fest (1977) is some of the best big band drumming I've ever heard. Get a copy!!

  • I met Butch Thanksgiving of 1998 at "Birdland" in Manhattan. FANTASTIC DRUMMER!!!

  • Interesting arrangement. And it seems a tad bit slower too.

  • Mike Van Allen is better

  • no , he isn't, have a seat.

  • this is close as i've heard it come to buddy rich good job butch!

  • I recommend you get the WDR band concert tribute to Buddy, with Butch on drums.

  • Sammy Nestico! gran autor y mejor arreglo!!!

  • Great arrangement!!!

  • Dude, i got 3 days of hour 1/2 personal lessons with Butch the week b4 he left to the Jazz Fest in Indiana. He is so AMAZING and he's definantly the coolest jazz drummers i've ever met, truly inspiring. He blew my mind and left me with many new ideas. if you dont know him, LEARN HIM! XP

  • I had the honour of meeting Butch when he came to Paris with Eddie Jones pklayng witha French group. I wish he could have emulated Buddy leading his own band. Allas economics!!!

  • Yeahhhhh Butch was just here in Elkhart,In at our Concord High School Jazz Caffe And Butch if yer reading this THANKS MAN ! It was unforgettable ! See you this weekend at The Elkhart Jazz Fest WE LOVE YOU MAN ! KEEP JAMMIN ! ED MAN

  • Dude, anyone who swings in my book is a good drummer. Butch not only swings, he actually comes close to emulating Buddy, Butch just doesn't have the fire like Buddy did. Nonetheless I think its a pretty good chart, and the sax player is awesome too....

  • amazing, i was lucky enough to have butch come and clinic our jazz band

  • This is cool.Rich and bellson do their versions of this.

  • hah wow, around 4:00 i was thinking, how can there be another 3 minutes left, this is the end of the chart, theres no way in hell Butch is gonna drag it like that

    then i thought, buuuuuuuuuutch

  • Can you imagine Buddy vs Butch?

  • Comment removed

  • Cully? he's a good drummer but he can't swing, oh and uh he's a dick on top of it...literally! I guess the ng rating you got bears me out... eh?

Butch is not only a great drummer but he's also a very nice man and not only can he play with chops he also knows how to SWING! and in case you aren't hip to this? ALL music MUST swing, Mozart on down ,

you may thank me for the free lesson ANYTIME!

  • No contest. Buddy all the way and I should know.

    BUTCH MILES

  • Man, daddy-o, Butch's solo here is one of the all time best drum solos I've ever seen.

All you kiddies who think Peart is so great, but you guys don't even know that guys like Butch and Donny Osborne are even alive.

You can go to any major city in the country and find 25 -at least - bona fide Jazz drummers who are light years ahead of Peart, and Mr. Miles is one of, if not THEE best, drummer alive on the planet right now .

Great touch, dynamics, power, ideas - he has it ALL ~

  • idk, man. you need to give some lovin' to sonny payne, too. him and chick webb laid the foundation for big band drumming

  • Well, since this is a Butch Miles video, not a Sonny Payne or Chick Webb video, what's your point?

Read my bio on my profile - I wasn't born yesterday, and I've been involved HEAVILY in Jazz for 40 years now. I've seen every big name (Jazz) player on every instrument in one form or another.

I repeat - This is one of the best solos you will see anywhere, by anyone, and Butch Miles, along with Donny Osborne, are the best drummers alive right now - slight nod to Butch.

    Case closed ~

  • Sorry, I didn't know there were YouTube profiles. I'm a little old for that. I wasn't criticizing your choice. It was just a mentioning of past greats who came before Butch. No need for hostilities.

  • Actually, I think the YT profiles are a great idea - you get an idea of the kind of person you may be chatting with, their interests, and a little about them personally, for better or worse.

You're a little old for that? Too old, at 22, to list some of your favorite musicians, movies, etc, so that others can learn a little about you?

If you want to be "too old" for something, why not try being too old to type "idk" instead of using actual English.

Back to school - in more ways than one ~

  • I prefer to keep my information off the Internet, especially from people who actually bother to look up my age to rebuke my previous claims. At your age, you should be mature enough not to "flame" other YouTube users. Using "Idk" is perfectly acceptable Internet vernacular. I've been playing and supporting jazz for a long time (not as long as you, obviously). You sound like the "uncool" pedant that cuts-down anyone who mentions something off the page. Try acting your age and not your shoe size.

  • Fifty-two IS my shoe size ~

  • BINGO Mark! like I typed it myself, reading through your many posts throughout the years, I find you to have taste and a better than average working knowledge of the instrument.

    Thanks man

  • What a great band - Butch is outstanding.

  • "The Wind Machine" was written by Sam Nestico and was played by Count Basie's band many times. It's still an important part of the Count Basie Orchestra's book.

  • this seems like it was once a Buddy Rich song

  • I love Frank Wess
