  • Do u think a quarter could make a size 12 ring?

  • For anybody thinking this is illegal, think of how many zoos, aquariums, amusement parks, etc. have penny pressers! Don't you think Disney has lawyers that check to make sure they're actually allowed to do this sort of thing?

  • A cute punkish metal working chick.

All i can say is keep up the good work And put out more video's.

    Ohhh and i subbed

  • @vorvek wrong. Read the laws associated with coinage. You can turn any coin into anything you like. The legality comes into question when you change the value.

  • its defaceing and you can get in trouble for it. i worked at a arcade once that would flatten pennys and stampthem with your name and we hade to shut it down do to a federal offacer came in with his kids saw it and thretened to arest the owner for running a defaceing operation. we whare told the only money that can be defaced is silver coinage and only in certin years.

  • @vorkev1 - Then the alledged federal "offacer" was lying and is probobly just some douche who gets his kicks from lording authority over other people, even when he doesnt have any. Defacing means altering or changing the value of something by changing or modifying the depiction, and *then trying to pass it off as legal tender*. For example, bleaching a 1 dollar bill and stamping it with a 100 dollar bill image and then attempting to use it as if it were a 100 dollar bill. Hence *fraudulently*.

  • really impressive

  • brava

  • that nose rong does not do you justice.

  • That ring was huge.

  • oil ur dapping punches

  • @metalsmitten thats friggin awesome,1 a ring made from a quarter,2its still got its markings rather than just being "blank",3 dont see to many ladies working with metal, hammers etc;(not because theyre incapable as youve shown)keep it up

  • your Semi-Creepy Basement Studio is pretty legit, ever try tapping silver coins to rings then drilling them out? its much more time consuming but its a ring none the less,

  • terrorist lol jk

  • Citizen,

You have violated the Coinage Act of 1792 by defacing Government Property. Report immediately to your nearest Department of Homeland Security Processing Center. Your failure to do so may result in your erasure.

  • @johnlopez123 you cant deface government property such as coins and put them back into circulation

  • Great work! Both you and your art are beautiful : ) . Keep it up.

  • What kind of file are you using? Could you please help me and tell me what kind of tool you are using at 1:50 to 1:52. I would love to make my wife a coin ring for our anniversary. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • Those are called needle files, and you can find them easily at tool stores or on e-bay. Used in jewelry making.

  • could you make me a ring inbox me

  • I never thought about doing this! I love it. Keep up the good work. Too bad pennies aren't large enough, that's about all they are good for!

  • Great video ! Thanks

I think it's wonderful that you make stuff and sell it. I know how hard it can be

I made a living doing blacksmith work for years and think I'm going give this a try

Little confused what you are trying to do when you tumble it in the shot

  • Any advice on getting the ring in a nice circle? I've made 5 so far (each one better than the last) but I can't seem to keep it round & not smash in the features on the coin. Basically you can see all the hammer strikes when I try to flatten the coin.

  • Very Nice!..How do you center the quarter in the punch?

  • I love the way you highlight "fraudulently" and think that by saying what you're doing is art not fraud. By altering in any way you are defacing U.S. currency and if you're actually selling these things for profit then you're definitely breaking the law because a quarter is a quarter, and not intended to have any greater worth because you mutilated coinage. Nice try, but "Artists" have been arrested for this kind of work before and their claim of "it's art!" didn't fly either.

  • @KatieCottingham Go be a faggot somewhere else please.

  • @nubzpwner Grow up and get real. Promoting illegal action is stupid and that's all you're doing by supporting this video in any way shape or form.

YouTube should have removed this because there are cases of arrest of persons making profit from the sale of defaced coinage, but, in my understanding of the rules, it apparently doesn't matter since no one is being physically harmed.

Also, love how you cannot even form an intelligent response; it makes my argument sound even better.

  • @KatieCottingham It is not illegal to make jewelry out of coins. Defacing currency is not illegal as long as you are not making it something that it is not. To change the date of a coin to one that is rarer is against the law. Defacing coins or paper money to commit fraud is against the law. can not melt down for the metal..This was done by the treasury department due to the fact the cent and nickel are worth more than face value due to the cost of the metal in them.

  • @KatieCottingham If it was illegal how would every amusement park and museum in this country be allowed to have those machines that press coins into little logos?

  • @Omega52 My lil bro tried to tell me the same thng that i could go to jail or what ever. I said what about the ones you can press at a zoo or what not. He replys he has no idea. So if the zoo can do it then heck i can too!

  • @KatieCottingham I was always under the impression that defacing any money for the purpose of counterfitting was the purpose of that law. What about people who use the machines that imprint pennies? Are they breaking the law? Or how about those who make the machines themselves found at local truck stops and amusment parks? Obviously its legal.

  • @KatieCottingham if a quarter can only be worth a quarter..then how do they get away with selling 1964 and older quarters for 5 dollars..?

  • @kymopar well great... now you just shut down e-bay >.<

  • Wish I had the tools

  • nice tips. i wish i have a studio like yours to be able to work properly.

  • AWESOME i wanna make one but dont have all the tools yet mwa hahaha

  • Cool! Really liked your video - just starting to get into more crafts with my hands, so don't know much. This might sound dumb but when you heat it, what type of torch was that? Is that your own workspace?

  • @Purplegirl321 that is a jewelers torch, it is much like a welding torch only it just runs off propane. i am assuming the reason for heating the piece is to anneal it making it soft. a regular propane torch would heat it enough for that purpose.

  • Lovin the Semi-Creepy Basement Studio. I'm workin on my own.

  • what is the name of thing u used to punch a hole in the quarter i am trying to make one my self

  • You're a organic fruit eating HIPPIE ! Your acoustic guitar music and your hippie garb tells me you're just a Berkenstock wearing vegetarian that most likely travels to weekend flea-markets in your Volkswagen van to peddle your crafts. You're the type that motorists see on the street corners with signs that read, Wage Peace Not War. How does it feel to be merely a stereotypical hippie? Pretty rings, btw.

  • einfach nur geil

  • NICE IDEA I,AM GOING TO TRY IT

  • Awesome rings, I browsed your website too, you've got talent, beautiful pieces. I get the whole process of how to make the ring, I'm curious though as to how you figure out what the finished size will be for a particular ring? Is this done when you make the hole in the quarter that determines the ring size?

  • Your hands are beautiful, all the more for what you are able to make with them.

  • make me 1

  • Please tell me that this isn't the type of music you listen to.

  • @epohnopulse What's wrong with a nice acoustic guitar tune? Maybe your ears suck.

  • Your video's probably the best one on here. :D

  • Thanks for sharing, nice craftwork. A semi creepy basement studio is better than a really creepy shed studio, especially when you have to share it with cranky groundhogs.

  • Can this be done with a pre 1963 (90% silver) quarter? I think this would make a nice present for my GF.

  • must it be a solid silver quarter or will the mystery metal we now have in circulation do? thanks and I love your workshop...kinda zenfunk

  • That is a great way to show how something is done! Perfect!

  • Very nice, video. I just checked out your Etsy story and your stuff there is very good looking. I like the recycle theme integrated with ...actual recycling (of coins, spoons, etc.)!!

  • Not that it's terribly relevant to this vid (which is good), but I personally find septum piercings to be the ONLY facial modification which consistently enhances beauty rather than detracting from it.

  • THIS IS ILLEGAL !! ahaha

  • @manvstaco this video is from 2009, and your reply is roughly 2 years later.. yet clearly at the beginning of the video it shows that is is NOT illegal....................... please pay more attention before commenting.

  • @rhadiem i was joking and yeah people are gonna reply years later while you have the video online. or i guess years late in your eyes..

  • Beautiful snot ring in your nose. Lol. So attractive.

  • i made a ring in welding class today but it kind of sucks ass. i think i'm going to try to make a quarter ring instead. it will look cooler too ;D

  • I always wonder how it was done.thank you

    FABIO -SP BRAZIL

  • If u were 2 sell one how much would u sell it for?

  • Thank you so much for showing exactly how to do that. Your video was fun and very clear. I appreciate the time that you took to make that.

  • I'm confused. Wouldn't all the details on the ring get flattened out with all that hammering?

  • that's awesome. :D i wish i could give it a try, but me and power tools don't really get along. lol

  • nerd

  • How much the varue of the metal. That's all I care.

The rest is just stealing money & Adding more money for nothing. Also, it's not really artistic. it's been done already not original at all.

  • @maxinpains just because it's been done before doesn't mean it's not art. stop being a clod and stfu

  • @ishouldplayzelda

Destroying valued antique coins as an art ...Sure! You can put it in that way. but then, where is your creativity as an artist?? BYW, I do love making cockies from cockie cutter.

So, plz, call me as an Artist, stincky jack ass. LMAO!

  • @maxinpains if every artist only did things that had never been done before, we would have ran out of ideas so long ago

  • @ishouldplayzelda

sure, I'd keep using cookie cutters my cookies so i won't runs out of idea....LMAO!

  • I hope your layperson's interpretation of "fraudulently" doesn't get you in a jam. The statute's use of the word refers to knowlingly defacing of coinage with intent to remove them from circulation thereby negatively affecting national commerce. I know, lots of people agree with you, and the government isn't keen on prosecuting... so far. I hope U.S. v. Metalsmitten doesn't appear on the District Court's criminal docket. Write a letter to the local U.S. Attorney and ask for an opinion.

  • Very cool!

  • I've been playing around with this and the heating definitely helps soften the quarter a lot. I also found that a 'rathburn' ring sizer (20 bucks) REALLY reduces the amount of pounding you have to do. I can't seem to get anything to come out smaller than a 9 1/2

  • I'm sure you've been doing this for awhile and have your system down... but I just wanted to note that letting the coin cool completely to room temperature by itself will do better to anneal it... rapid cool down by water will cause the grain structure of the metal to harden. someones probably already mentioned this... but just wanted to throw it out there :-) rock on with yuh bad self!

  • awesome vid thanx.

how long do you have to heat the quarter for?

  • wow, those look very cool!

  • Great video! I really appreciate it!!

  • very cool. Who's playing the guitar???

  • @imranino itss a song dickhead

  • Thats cool!

  • can u make me one????

  • what is the background music!?

  • are you using a silver quarter or a base metal one?

  • @derekHSmith

brain cells got flooded with cum, u gotta wank more m8.

  • Great video Jess, thank you for it!!

  • Thank you very much. Excellent tutorial.

  • that's awesome!!!

  • I am using a oak spindle that i got from home Depot LOL! It works ok but I am waiting for my mandrel I ordered from ebay. You do need quite a bit of toolage to get this done. Its also a lot of work and dont expect perfection the first couple times.

  • Yay, when you said anneal and put in parenthesis what it meant, I felt smart. Smart because I already knew the technical definition!

  • How would you put a gem or a stone on it

  • why do you have a nose ring. it's gross

  • Jess, this is a great video and your work is very, very nice, /Vince, from Vinces Jewelry Gallery.

  • great video thanks so much .. looking forward to any new videos

  • Thank you. I made my first "quarter" ring today, inspired by and with help from your video. Thank you for sharing techniques and methods.

  • @JeffW77 You had all those tools? :0 I dont have any of those and i want to make one :(

  • Love it

one question though where did you get the jig thing you used to put the hole in the quarter

    ?

    Help please

  • Love your videos! Please make more! What kind of desk do you use?

  • This is my fav of your videos. Thanks! :)

  • awesome video! i was just wondering, how do I control the sizing of it? i don't gave that handy mandrel/ hole setup or anything too terribly similar, and i'm trying to get a size 10 ring out of this...

  • .. you should dye your hair red i bet itd look really cute just sayin:D

  • What is that piece of metal in your nose for?

  • Thank you for actually knowing the law and showing it to people! It bothers me so much when I'm messing around with sculpting coins and people are all like "OMG you're defacing currency you're gonna go to jail!"

  • @jyciusvid How right you are. I am a former Police Officer who quit my job and left the Police State known as the US(S)A. I am so sick of hearing people on the Internet make these false claims that this is in violation of the Coinage Act. It is not illegal as you are not trying to fraudulently pass them as something they are not. They are art people. These people worry more about these coins, and don't think at all about the Federal Reserve as 'Federal'' as Federal Express. Sad.

  • nice music jk

  • What do you do with all of the middles? lol

  • no hatin lilgoon

  • What's the tumbler for?

  • i know this is a weird question but where did you get your jewelers workbench?

  • Does anyone know the song name?

    Cheers

  • @MikeTTE1 I think it's a loop from an Apple program called Garage Band.

  • Does anyone know the song?

    Cheers

  • Cool, can I get you to make me one?

  • Wait, so I can just heat up the coin by putting it on the stove top and then cooling it in water once in order to make it workable? I've never worked with metal, only with wood so far :/

    thanks! I love your video!

  • You are cool.

  • Epic video I just got something for my gf off your site

  • That was a creepie but effective Basement Studio. I was going to put about 100x more effort into making one of these than was needed. Thanks for this awesomely amazingly insightful demonstration. Plus your Cute so it was even better.

  • I have the same tumbler as you ;D i use it to polish rocks. they come out really pretty.

  • First, I noticed that you switched hammers halfway through. Any reason for this? Second, would you say a 12oz plastic mallet would be ideal? Thanks for the post, it's great!

  • nice work! what a clever girl

  • can you use the punch and die set on a quarter that you haven't annealed?

  • What size of hole do you use to punch out the hole? I used the 3/4 and it didnt look right. I used a quarter. What is the biggest size ring you can get out of the quarter? Great work by the way!!

  • Wow! can u make me one and mail it to me? Please? I'll pay 20-30 bucks

  • I'm wondering if a steel tapered punch would work for my mandrel to hammer against, or if the steel would be too hard and press the design out of the inside of the coin. Also, what type of hammer is that? Looks like a shot-filled mallet. Wonder if a brass mallet would be too hard? Great build!

  • THAT IS AWESOME! Haha to bat I do not have any of that nifty stuff :(

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! U may need to make me some (for a price of course) cause that seems like a ton of work! And im no mechanic. How much are all the tools you used, total?

  • woah, holy shit that's awesome! you should make an instructables page for this so it can be more detailed.

  • where did you get your tool to cut the hole in the quarter at?

  • Wow you go girl.............. nice

  • how do you size the ring?

  • Holy crap, I cant believe I somehow managed to get all the materials I need from my house, but the coin itself! How in the world dont I have a quarter in my entire house!

  • very nice, great work.

    your pretty cute if i may add, dam i need a woman that knows what there doing as much as you do :}

  • is it a tattoo on you arm? anyways. very nice video :D

  • absoluely love your work, your motivating this ole gal over here to get started.. would love to hear from you on where you got that awesome cutter for cutting out the center of the coin. I am also now subscribed to your videos.. and by the way, love your website too.

  • wheree did u get the blowtorch?

  • its kinda nasty cause there is copper sandwiched in between 2 silver faces in the american quarter and copper has an unpleasant smell

  • @furiousThinh Quarters made before 1964 are silver though :) I heard 90% silver, a lot better than the current ones

  • Hi there,

I'm Neil from England, I now live in WV.

    Is this Hard to do?

How much do all the Tools cost?

I Love the way you make the rings So Cool !!

I would Love to buy some also.

    Many thanks,

    Neil.

  • wow so cool to see how u make em ; ) where can I get the equipment u use?? anny online store? I live in norway

  • So Hammering it on the mandrel doesn't take out the design on the coin? That's awesome! That's the one thing I'm afraid of when making these....

  • love it...i used the exact same music for my first video i ever made! lol

  • ok, never mind. I figured out the answer to my question.

  • Where did you get the circle punch shown around 1:03? How much did it cost? Thank you for the video.

  • at 0:59 seconds where can i get one of those

    and what is it called

  • Comment removed

  • You should use silver coins. Would be cool! Great video of how you make em. I wanna try this way now.

  • do you know where i can buy the tool you used to punch the hole?

  • @raracher you can get that at Harbor Freight. Search for 9 piece punch and die set.

  • ha ha mac loop music, Awsome ;)

  • Hi , I made a couple coin rings when I was a kid using the spoon and tap method. Like yours much better ,and am about to try my first one.

Quick question ... what size die should I use for a size 11 (men's U.S. ) ring. I ordered the disc cutters and should have them tomorrow.

    Thanx

  • Thanks for the tip Jess!!

  • the tumbler has steel shot in it, which work hardens the ring (as well as burnishing it). actually, just hammering it on the mandrel so much work hardens it pretty well too. i just like the tumbler step to ensure even hardness (and to burnish).

the handy jig i use is a cheapie disc cutter from harbor freight :) there are definitely nicer ones that exist, but the price was right with this one.

  • @metalsmitten yes thank you, i just found the same one at HF last night!

  • @metalsmitten did the disc cutter come w/ the plastic see through top plate?...or did you have that made?

    thank you...love your work!!!

  • Looks like that tumbler will only polish the ring. What do I do to harden the ring again?

  • where would i get the "handy jig that cuts out a circle".. the one used 0:58..link or the name of that tool please..thanks

  • What can I do to turn the ring less malleable again? Since I dont have that appliance.........Would heating the ring again with a torch and then dip in water be ok?
