Hi Venkat, Very nice to see ur Video. U r really a good man Because give us free lesson. Could u please tell me Where is Lesson 12 and more? Thanks. Again u r very helpfull
Hello Venkat, for some years I played piano, but now I travel quite often and as a result I haven't played in years. I love music, and decided to get a portable instrument ; I love music, and I have watched your videos. Today I will buy tabla and follow your lessons.
It's quite interesting - only twenty years ago I would have been forced to choose an instrument that people near me can give lessons. Thanks for your careful explanations and good sound. :)
I bought Tablas a year or 2 ago & couldn't figure out how to even get close to some of the notes I hear played on videos. I had no idea how to use the hammer, tune it, or any of the basics. I thought I may have bought a defective set or something, but already noticed a major difference in the sounds it was making after watching your Lesson 1 video. My bāyāñ doesn't have the tuning sticks in the strings, but I'm hoping if I make some it'll make it sound better.
I bought hand made Tablas from India 12 years ago. They were shipped her via boat (cheapest). The leather cast they came in was destroyed and they weren't tuned at all. They ended up in a closet for the last decade. Thank you for this video. Perhaps I will finally be able to add this element to my sound.
my name is mosawar and i am from calgary alberta and iam playing tabla for one year i didint have a ustad or a teacher and i learend tabla by my self and its been 1 week waching your tabla lessen its relly helping me but i need to learn how too tune my tabla. if u want too contact me it well be wonderfull because i need a electronic tunpura. at 403.2549464
the tuning of the note will stay the same if you have nut and bolt but not laced because when you store it the skins relieves itself and the gajara will go up in due time but i have nut and bolt and it stays the same but the YOU ARE RIGHT
man thank God for the internet aye, I'm buyin Tabla drums soon as an experiemental thing for my band and I was like crap how do I tune it how do I play it etc... good ol' youtube is teaching me everything I need to know XD well not everything cuz nothing beats a Tabla teacher but y'know
I'm sure he is slightly nervous, and mumbles something under his breath in his native language. Probably the word for "Various Factors", which he had a problem recalling if you listen to 3:45 to 3:50.
Some of you people out there are so bored with your lives that you have to be disgusting in order to entertain yourself. God Bless America.
He says "frankly" not "faggot" and "cut up some of the bits", not "son of a bitch".
Really, guys. This is a great video where someone's teaching a valuable lesson. It's pretty lame to come on a video for tabla and make fun of someone with an Indian accent.
get a thin string like sewing thread and make it a little bit thicker but like making 4 circles out of it and then place the thread under the kinar and the tabla will ring
The straps of my tabla are very stiff and seem stuck in a certain shape even after removing from the ghatta. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to loosen these straps? I would add a little water, but I don't know if it will damage it.
to fix this the best thing to do is remove the blocks and then take some sort of spray to spray down the whole tabla. and then pull the string all the way through and put the ghatta on one strap giving your tabla a better sound and strap
venkat sir thank u very much for all the lessons that u post i really learnt a lot i hope that you will constantly post videos on tabla so that we can keep learning from you keep it up thank you
this guy is taking a step to teach tabla to people and if u think he is really a beginner then why dont u start posting videos of ur own if u cant then u stop disgracing this men because he is kind enough to teach at least a few beats rather than commenting
I bought my Tabla in Bangalore while I was there a few years ago and really appreciate your video!! One question - I do not have the wood dowels in my large Tabla, should I? I also do not get that twang or really nice high tone on my smaller Tabla - how do I get that sound? THANKS!!!!
hey im a 16 year old girl....and i amazed all my friends and families by playing the tabla out of no where....they were all amazied...and i showed them your youtubr website and told tem that u were my guruji...thanks alot....
You see when you strike the edges downwards or upwards as he shows it stretches or releases the skin, which changes the pitch from high to low, like if u got a balloon and stretched it and tols someone to flick it it will make a high pitch sound opposing to it being normal or stretched very little... hope that helped

ez bhaiya venkat me n ma older bro luv playin the tabla n seein u play ma bro wen n got a pair n since we'v learnt a lot infact we'r actually competin wid each ada!u da man
my teacher told me when you tune you shouldn't hit the straps with the hammer because it damages them, you should hit the braid instead (in between the straps)
It isn't easy. Had 2 go2 the maker. I can explain how he did. Find the one end tied to the bottom ring. Hold dagga between feet as \U/ (slash are ur feet) Use a metal rod keeping it under the strap Pull one by one strap rotating the dagga till u reach the other end of the strap, then tie the other end
You should not move the pegs up on the tabla everytime after you play. For the bhaiya this is okay but not for the actual tabla. Tune the tabla and leave it, then fine tune. Even after tuned the tabla was out of tune...try to play closer attention to the sur of the tanpura. Other wise good caring techniques...keep up the good work.
Very informative. I hope to buy some Tablas as soon as I can afford them...well, after I get a drum set, some new amps, maybe another guitar, some congas, a new mixer, ect, ect...LOL! I want all instruments!!! One at a time i guess...

generally...some are made without adjustments dowels on the base side.......don't ask why!
as for the high pitch tone......try tuining it to high c(or sa). If that doesn't work.....then it depends on the size of the tall side.

it helps you tune the tabla
Pantz05 3 years ago
I figured as such, but how is my question.
How does striking the edge of a head raise its pitch?
soursimon 3 years ago
You see when you strike the edges downwards or upwards as he shows it stretches or releases the skin, which changes the pitch from high to low, like if u got a balloon and stretched it and tols someone to flick it it will make a high pitch sound opposing to it being normal or stretched very little... hope that helped
