  • Love that Tone!

  • its rediculous that he can do that while he sings...

  • excelente musico! Dios le inundó de mùsica

  • I don't think that's even his GUITAR! He has that cherry sunburst, and in all the years I've seen or traveled with him, I've never seen this axe. Steph? Robin? Mark or Fr. Ron if yer out there--borrowed guitar?

  • For LOTS of reasons Phil Keaggy is a hero to me.

  • Amen +

  • I love that in an interview when Jimi Hendrix was asked how it feels to be the best guitarist ever he responed with I don't know ask Phil Keaggy. I also love that the best guitarist ever is an open Christian.

  • @bergdaddy11: Dude, that's urban legend. Phil himself said: "Keaggy has long insisted that such stories are completely unfounded, noting that "it was impossible that Jimi Hendrix could ever have heard me...We...recorded our first album at Electric Lady Studios two weeks after his unfortunate death, so I just can’t imagine how he could’ve heard me. I think it’s just a rumor that someone’s kept alive, and it must be titillating enough to keep an interest there...So I don’t think it was said…"

  • @nsbear1

But is it untrue that Phil is fantastic; a creative artist in his own right? Skills alone but someone that uses his skills to bring about music to the Glory of God.....

  • @texasfan1971 No it's not untrue. I wasn't disputing Phil's talents, just the urban legend about him and the fiction that Hendrix said Phil was such a great guitarist. I've seen Phil about four times over the years and he never ceases to amaze me at his talent and humility.

  • @nsbear1 Thanks for the clarification nsbear1. I try not to be distracted by urban legends but try more to focus on talent vs. posers. Phil, in my opinion, is pure talent regardless if he is thought to be better than one person or another. As he, and we, grow old, we can only hope there are others that will follow in his footstep to deliver Gods music with such talent.

  • I love his licks on this songs, on the album Crimson, with the delay or reverb, it is so cool on the album. Very sensitive and moving version of a classic hymn.

  • SIMPLY THE VERY BEST.. !!LYRICISM,TEXTURE , EMOTION,AND NOT THE LEAST H..E..A..R..T oh YES JUST FOR Sure .. THE .MOST ..VERSITLE GUITARIST OF OUR TIME..

  • if 'of our time' means the past 10 years, then check out Shawn Lane. Enough said...

  • Keaggy OFTEN refutes that story as legend but not true. Besides it usually is Jimi Hendrix rather than Clapton that gets name-dropped.

  • @shawnuel it was Chet Atkins.

  • A reporter once asked Eric Clapton how it felt to be the greatest guitar player ever? Eric answered,"I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy."

  • While Keaggy is indeed a wonderful musician, I'm not sure this exchange ever happened. Other versions of the rumor have Hendrix saying this after Johnny Carson asked him who the greatest guitarist alive was. Keaggy denies that it was ever said, but Keaggy is a very humble man. I just wish we had some documentation of such a statement from Clapton and/or Hendrix.

  • I would hold his talent against any guitar player who has ever or will ever live.

  • DanTheIceCreamMan007??? Rarely see such musical talent in christian music???? Bro, get outta the contemporary service and check out some gospel churches and artist!!! Israel houghton, Tye Tribbet, Fred hamond etc.

  • yeah I agree, some of the best keyboard playing of any style is the old fashioned gospel music and the artists you listed. One of my problems with newer stuff is its to easy to play

  • You rarely see such musical talent in christian artists(they rock lyrically though) but Phil Keaggy is a great musician by any standard, one of my favorite artists.

  • We have a piano player at our church that would make your hair stand on end! Hearing her play Amazing Grace makes you feel like you're standing in Heaven.

  • @DanTheIceCreamMan007

I've seen him in concert since the mid-70s and each time I can't believe that he can get any better, but he always does! He's really incredible! (And funny too, though hedidn't start out that way. He didn't use to talk nearly at all between songs!)

  • so smooth

  • Thank you again!!!!!

  • Phil Keaggy is such a great musician its a blessing listening to his music

  • What a beautiful rendition of this song. Thank you for posting.

  • This is one of my favorite songs of all time

  • Missed all three of these guys at CMS this year.

  • I love this song..heard it by another Christian group in the mid-70's...but I love Phil's arrangement!!! Thank you, Lord, for Phil!!!!

  • very nice - God bless you in JESUS name+ our Savior & King!!!!

  • AMEN AND AMEN

  • :) amen!

  • Phil knows how to groove, but it's cool that he plays old hymns too! He did this song on the "Hymnsongs" album. No matter how music changes, I hope some of these songs live on.

  • Dude is ridiculous.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Phil Keaggy, live, electric. I hope everyone got a chance to attend The Master & Muscian Tour 08. He is a class act!

  • There's a studio version (solo: 2:45) of this one on "Crimson & Blue"; very rich in guitar texture & harmonic patterns and very spiritually moving also (probably out of print). Check "Stark Raving Jams" collection from Phil's website. It lists a 6 minute version.

  • this was awesome getting to see it live i have videos of Lincoln Bruster's band from overlake also

  • This song have in any Phill Keaggy's DVD??

  • Not to my knowledge. This was shot at a concert of his in Washington State.

  • I fairly certain (without looking) that there is an instrumental version on Philly Live as one of the extras. Him on his Zion guitar in his home studio... (I think)

I also think the vocal version is on "Crimson and Blue".

  • This guy is just AMAZING on the guitar. Eletric and acoustic guitar.

    God Bless You,Phill!

  • If you like him you will also love Tommy Emmanuel, an amazing Australian artist who, like Phil appears, is so humble, and seems would play his guitar the same way if no one was listening. Phil and Tommy connect with people on an emotional level, very special.
