The most tragic element of this movie is the kids. The title and the end reveals that the children are the "uthiri pookal". All the up-grown human activities have a direct lifelong impact on children.
What a brilliant, brilliant film! My all-time favourite tamizh movies are Iruvar and Paruthi Veeran - I decided recently that I must go back and watch some movies from my childhood period which I might have not watched properly as a child/forgotten, to see if there are any movies that will beat Iruvar and Paruthi Veeran for me.
Uthiri Pookkal comes close. This movie was just brilliant!
I would rate this supposed to be the best ever movie in Tamil Cinema History. It does not mean that no good movies have come..but this movie still positioning No.1 place in Perfect Direction, Action, Absolute Herat breaking Music in every scene by Great Ilayaraja which are blended with great Story and I wish another Mahendran to born to break this...
WOW !!! JUST WOW

No wonder Mani Ratnam cited this movie as his inspiration. The climax is probably the best among those i have seen.

@pinkpurse1234 i have watched and read "pather panchali". The reality and feel was very tragic.

I would compare this film with 'Pathar Panchaali' for the reality it portrayed.
Brilliant narrative style:)

Tamil Cinema gifted with some Great directors unlike other Indian Cinema right from 50's till date.
Excellent Emotions shown till the End in Script and Making.
God of Music - Illayaraja - Man Gifted to Tamil Nadu.
One of Worst Culture prevailed in those periods in TN shown here Flawlessly.
Next to,
1) Pudhupettai 2) Uthiri Pookal stands in true Narration among Very Few Others like
Guna,Mahanadhi,Anjathey,Mullum Malarum, Johnny - according to me.
Heart was broken into pieces after seeing.
