Too messy. Most railroaders prefer spray painting the rail sides and ties while using the eraser to clean off the top of the rails. So much faster and cleaner than your way. I must say I've never see rails done this way. Cleaver, I guess.
@slendersausage - I agree to a point. The information (and it *is* great information) could be delivered thoroughly in 1/2 to 2/3 the time. Things like explaining how to scrub the track, how to rinse the track, describing to us the male and female fittings on the PVC (we understand that screwing a cap on anything requires a male/female connection) just draw the video out. I found myself too often drumming my fingers wanting the demo to move along.
I actually like the "clean" look of black rail. I'm not too talented in weathering, so I'll probably use just use black, or keep the nickel color the rails come with.
You can control how much the rail "blackens" by how long you keep it in the solution. If you keep it in the solution for just a short time the rail comes out a more reddish brown.
How would this method work with concrete ties?

@flew69er Hmmm...I don't know. I've never tried it. I don't think the plastic would get blackened.

Yeah it does. You can buy a bigger bottle too. It also comes in 1 pint bottles.

how long will it take to get a reddish brown color?
CSXPapp 2 years ago
It takes about 2 - 5 minutes.
thebige61 2 years ago
is that with your mixture, 1:1?
CSXPapp 2 years ago
Yeah. you can slow the blackening process down if you dilute the solution even more. It all depends on how blackened you want your rail.
thebige61 2 years ago
ok. thank you.
