  • i kinda hear the laughs of strains of insanity

  • Why does it seem that characters whose theme is also the battle theme are the most epic ever?

  • This music is even better when you're listening to it while fighting Magus. It's the first piece of music (in the games I've played) that fits flawlessly with the sound effects (the wind) and the speech that leads up to the fight.

  • Piccolo + Hair = epic

now add a scythe and you've got the fricken reaper

  • 0 dislikes. that is all

  • Magus was such an awesome villain. I could compare him to Vegeta from DBZ, which would be appropriate for obvious reasons.

    Toriyama-san is awesome.

  • @QuartrGuy

I highly agree. Magus is DEFINITELY a Vegeta-type character. His more-powerful-than-thou attitude, the fact that he is not as evil as you think after reaching a certain point, and that he is simply badass. He is also a very serious and deliberate character, like Vegeta. Many parallels can be drawn between them.

  • i also love akira toriyama doing the artwork

  • You can hear Strands of Insanity in the background.

  • Chrono Trigger is an epic underground game. If only it Square paid more attention to it besides Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts :|

Both FF and KH are going too far. Chrono series is fucking BEAST!!!

  • @ForgetTheEnd

You dare say KH is going too far to a major KH fan?!?!?! I think KH should NEVER end. Sure, I'm not about to say anything bad about Chrono (since to be quite honest I don't know much about it), but dude, saying KH is going too far is just WRONG. (Although I do agree about FF going a tad far. Like, seriously, if SE wants to do more FF, they should expand on some of the titles that are already out, right?) So, could you take back the part about KH going too far please?

  • @Orangeodude Alright, sorry. But I must say, KH fans seems to be more pleased with it than FF fans, since FF is garbage past 10. Never played a lot of KH's

  • @ForgetTheEnd

Apology accepted. So, anyways, you've never played any KH games? I remember I discovered KH when I was listening to a bunch of video game OSTs when I noticed all the best ones were from KH. So I looked into KH a little more... got the games, became a fan in a blink. The only things I don't like are some of the mini-games and certain hard bosses. Other than that, EVERYTHING else about it is epic. Some people can't get past the fact that there's Disney characters in it, unfortunately

  • @ForgetTheEnd

Sure, but many fans really don't want Squeenix messing up the Chrono series like FF was screwed with. Catch-22 there.

  • @MagicantNess Guess so, but it'd still be nice to have a sequel, or a remake since this game was rather short.

  • @ForgetTheEnd

There is a sequel, actually, called Chrono Cross.

    It has mixed reviews though...

  • Looks more like a DBZ game if you ask me.

  • @TheMenas123 that's cause the character designer is the same as the mangaka of dragonball

  • game far ahead of its time.

  • Great game, but: crono=goku, marle=launch, lucca=bulma, and muuuuch more.

  • @ShamanTheHedgehog

Uhh.... dude, Akira Tokiyama drew for Dragonball Z and Sqaresoft... not only Chrono Trigger. Have u ever played Dragon Quest???

  • @peanut3423 ur right! This theme IS awesome!

  • does anybody else notice that chrono trigger characters are drawn in the same art style as the Dragonball Z anime? This guy looks like Kibito-shin.

  • @AnimaMandala well, the same guy drew them both.

  • @AnimaMandala The same artist is also of Dragon Quest 8, Check out doulmagus from that game. they look exactly the same, both magus and doulmagus. Threw me for a loop definitely when i played both games, i thought it was the same guy o.O

  • Admittedly I prefer the beginning over the rest of the song, I love those pipes.

  • Comment removed

  • You didn't uploaded Black Omen?! It's one of my favourite songs of this game!

  • @Star00X It is? I didn't really found it climatic enough for the ship of Queen Zeal, which is pretty much the portal to the fight with Lavos. I prefer Undersea Palace by miles.

  • @Oudaen Yeah, me too, i prefer Underseal Palace, but you got to admit, Black Omen isn't THAT bad. Actually, i think it's overrated.

  • @Star00X What is overrated? Sorry, but now it sounds like you think Black Omen is overrated, that sounds kinda weird to me as you just praised it.

  • @Oudaen Actually, i'm from Argentina, so it kinda confuses me. I'm not totally sure of what IS overrated.

  • Behold! Our fiendlord!

  • Oh. F*ck. Yeah.

  • wow this looks just like doulmagus off of the game dragon quest 8 O.o

  • @master0fgaming Not surprising since both have the same artists..

  • The black wind howls...

  • Bad memories of this boss come haunt me to this day...

  • I always saw Magus as more of a Anti-Hero as opposed to villain, he's just out to kill Lavos by any means necessary, anyone who gets in his way have only themselves to blame.

  • *insert comment about dragonball z*

    Awesome music.

  • I know what' I'm getting with my birthday money.

  • @Alcathr F you Hater

  • I like this theme, although I think there are better in the game as well.

  • Looks like Vegeta, kind of. The face, I mean.

  • Chrono Trigger, the game that got me into RPGs. I thank my cousins for showing me this when I was a kid!

  • @muronomu This game also introduced me to RPG's, But why rank it 38? should at least be in the top 20. This game is still, to this day, my favorite game of all time. This game was released in 1995, re-released again in 2001 in a two game pack (Only bought it for this game) and re-released AGAIN in 2008 for the Nintendo DS, Clearly, this game has a loyal and devoted fan-base that still loves it over a decade later. I also have the OST that still makes me giddy as a schoolgirl.

  • @Nihontopride This is not a ranking.

  • has anyone noticed that he looks like somethin' from DBZ?

  • @leathehedgehog104Q That's because the concept art of Chrono Trigger was done by Akira Toriyama himself.

  • @muronomu

    oooooohhhhhh...

  • @leathehedgehog104Q really? I didn't notice that! *sarcasm*

  • @metakracko929

meh...at least I know why it looks like that now. :/

  • sounds like a bullfight...in the sky.

  • id like to see FFVII try to beat this

  • Is it me,or do i hear Strains of Insanity?

  • Magus > Sephiroth

  • @ShinigamiTony plz gtfo

  • Fighting Magus was long, but easy. You just needed lots of eithers, mid potions, and arura heal or heal beam.

  • Am I the only person who likes this more than all of Lavos themes?

  • Magus' theme is just beast. 'Nuff said.

  • Lmao I still play this on my SNES.

  • he looks like kibitoshin from DBZ

  • akira toriyama best artist ever

  • I seriously cannot get over how much the character designs are identical to the Dragon Ball Trilogy!!!! I can't believe I only played this game a little while back yet I am still a strong Final Fantasy Fan...this game is awesome but I'm punching both sides of my creative part of my brain (51%) to find a clear answer as to which is better! Retro RPG style FF or Chrono Trigger & Cross...

  • buoy base is also an awesome theme, i dont know or it is on this list but it is definitly worth it

  • i hope i get this on my ds

  • Magus was a pain in the ass. I personally thought he was harder to kill than Lavos. Can you hear the wind blowing at the beginning of the track?

  • @StrangeClams

the wind blowing is my favorite part. It really helps set up the mood.

  • @trademark091 Again, the dark winds begin to howl...

  • Chrono Trigger is pretty much the greatest RPG ever made. Also, I personally don't care what other people think, but Chrono Cross was also really good, despite the fact that it had hardly any connections to Trigger.

  • @JToad27

Not the greatest but pretty good compared to... well, anything with Final Craptasy attached to it.

  • MAGUS IS BADASS

  • That dude looks like he's from Dragon Ball Z

  • oh... yeah... 10/10...

  • i'm surprised that nobody said that almost all the characters look like they're from dragon ball series... seriously

  • That's because Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball, did the character design in the PS1 and DS versions of Chrono Trigger.

  • Thats because, like in Dragon Quest, the people who designed Chrono Trigger also made Dragonball.

  • great song from one of my all time favorite rpg's. 5/5

  • I got this game yesterday and it is already my 3rd favorite game of all time.

  • epic... nuf said

  • i started a walktrough of chrono trigger it would be cool if more ppl could go check it :P

  • i still perfer snes version over ds xP orginality ftw :D

  • 1:02 I hear that Strain of Insanity laugh

  • 50000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars

  • magus is a epic character

  • why does the guy look like someone from dbz

  • because he was drawn by the same guy.

  • because it was draw from dbz guys :P

  • Its characters are drawn anime-style

  • @guyman34728 its because the one who designed chrono trigger was the same guy who made dragon ball

  • I know

  • 8/10

    Ill get it for DS

  • 9/10 best part 0:50-1:00

  • The distant laughs are just... creepy. lol I hated fighting Magus. He's awesome, but his barriers are annoying. BARRIER BARRIER BARRIER.

  • the best part is when you fight him, because the creepy distant laughs are still there. it adds to an already awesome battle. easily the best, imo.

  • 7/10 not THAT epic but just good

  • Comment removed

  • It took me many tries until I could beat magus the first time. I have the DS version not the original, so I remember the demonic laughs that were here.

  • Wait, they are there. They are just really faint.

  • Hey, now I hear it!

  • get a horny dragonballZ and a horny final fantasy in a motel room for 2 days ...in 9 months the result will be chrono triger

  • @ingram878 Hey,i've always thought about Chrono Trigger similarities to DBZ. Especially in art.

  • @Murdearaa its story and design was made by the same person. chrono appears in one DBZ movie if am not wrong.

  • @ingram878 Are you saying chrono trigger sucks?

  • @mariofreak955 lol of course not, even dragon ball Z is preety awesome

  • @ingram878 good,I love chrono trigger,so does my friend Emi3280.I dont know what, but when i first played the game i got hooked, considering that i dont like RPG,s that much. But Chrono trigger started my love for RPG,s.Dragonball Z Budokai 2=Best 2D DBZ game, but Tenkaichi 3 is kinda better.

  • @ingram878 Dude, you just Ninja'd my thought, how dare you.

  • @ingram878 thats not true.. chrono trigger is the younger brother of FF and DB, doomed to always stand in the shadow of both.

  • @Alcathr Well cmon, the game itself is rather good, isn't it?

    It can't be overshadowed forever.

  • @ingram878 ?

  • very cool! maybe will go out and get Chrono Trigger :/...

  • I can't decide on what's my favorite song in Chrono Trigger. It's either the Main Theme, this, World Revolution, Epilouge to Good Friends or Outskirts of Time. I can't decide. Too many good songs. XD

  • Barrier Change. Barrier Change. Barrier Change.

  • so...

    many...

    barriers...

    *curls up into fetal position*

  • @TheTyrantDragon what's the current barrier count?

    IT'S OVER 9000!!!!

  • im sad, after i beat this game i accidently saved over my old file :( now im too upset to even play it, in my new file i got up to the part with Ayla then i just quit, But i save my file in all 3 spots now so i dun save over it XD

  • This isn't a list... I just put random video game music up whenever I feel like it. >_>

  • Magus <3<3<3 Just beat the game with only him XD Love his music though.

  • They aren't in order of quality-best to worst

  • !!!!!!!!!

  • I have never played past the opening carnival.

  • I've got Chrono Trigger for the SNES... and I have to say, good pick! When I first went through Magus's castle, it freaked me out... it's just so creepy. But Magus is by far my favorite character in the game. :3

  • Haven't gotten far, stuck in that dumbass sewer place

  • you mean in the future?

    thats an optional place

you should go to the site 32

  • I pretty much figured that thanks to a friend

  • man this game is awesome

I still have two endings to go and I have cleared this game

  • I fought him with Frog. It just goes along with the story. Frog gets his revenge for Cyrus. Frog is my favorite character though, maybe thats why I feel this way.

  • when you choose if you want to fight him with frog i chose yes and killed him man i was stupid!! :(

  • So did i...

...Then i just reset the game without saving and chose not to fight him and he joined me X)

  • great game ! great music !

  • (Magus casting a spell) "You can dance if you want to..."

  • Magus was in fact janus. well thats what i understood of the dream devourer ending : )

  • We knew Magus was Janus even before that. You find out he was Janus right before you either fight him or have him join you.

  • Comment removed

  • You would get the dream Devourer ending better if you played Chrono Cross

  • Really... you honestly can't follow the ending well at all otherwise.

  • @warfallen yeah.. and why the spoiler? i already knew it, but there are still people who come here just to listen a glimpse from the music.

  • @mirrorpiece wow chill nobody cares about spoilers anymore plus that comment was from a year ago -_-

  • Magus is a badass, both as a playable and as a boss.

  • amen to that! plus his shadow magic and awesome damage output with both magic and melee moves are some of the many reasons why he's my favorite character

  • Which spell was it...?

    Eternal Dark or Dark Eternal...

Either way, that spell made me keep him well after I got Crono back!

(Still waiting for a great 3rd part to the series!)

  • Say, Peanut. Have you played Dragon Ball Origins?

  • Interesting fact I found out while looking in the DS bestiary: Magus has 6666 hp.

  • well, he IS the fiendlord, is he not?

  • highway to he... what there is one more 6....

  • @Ultracoder2005 even worse than satan

  • amen to that. chrono trigger is FANTASTIC. and the music is awesome too. this is my favourite track in the whole game. have you checked out lavos' themes yet? it's my latest avgm ;)

  • meh. i cant even get to magus...stupid slash keeps killing me!! >:O

  • i know what you mean, man. slash was pretty hard. that friggin wind slash always kills me... but ozzie was pathetic. absolutely pathetic. hell, i didnt break a sweat when fighting magus, either.

  • Wow. You know, you have great taste in music, Peanut. By the way, at what point of the game do you fight Ozzie? Oh, and who is the very last boss of Chrono Trigger?

  • u fight ozzie (well his dead/zombie minions) the second time you go to 1000 ad (after you have robo and have beat heckran) and the last boss (im not sure if it is always lavos) but it might (i dunno, i beat lavos at the first time u go to end of time)

  • whistle...

    Definitely Akira Toriyama.

  • If I get a DS for my birthday I hope I get Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4 & another decent game with it.

  • His face looks alot like Kibito Kai from DBZ.

  • funny you say that. the guy who did dbz, akira toriyama, also designed the characters in chrono trigger.

  • Yeah, I know that.

    I love his art style.

    It's so unique and detailed.

  • i have the version for the playstation 1 and snes but im stuck on lavos final battle.....so hard at the end

  • isthe ds version the sameas the snes version? i have it but ive never played the ds version

  • it's pretty much the same, but there's a few added features. i'm loving it so far.

  • Chrono trigger ds... what will they come up with next; mario & wario ds? It's an awesome game, but they could make a slightly bigger effort... like a good sequel.

  • the ds version isn't bad at all! all the series needs is a direct sequel to chrono trigger, or something along the lines of that.

  • im pretty sure that the sequel is chrono cross is it not?

  • yeah, but kind of like final fantasy its an entirely new cast. unrelated stories, too.

  • scratch that. i just read a lot about chrono cross. it IS (sort of) a sequel. a lot of the characters are present in it that are in the original though they have minor roles. and lavos is (sort of) the final boss. he gets fused with schala or something like that.

  • Yes, what I meant is that they should try to not re-release old hits with some improvements, but make something completely new. An idea is, if they managed to adapt CT's game engine from SNES, they could make an entirely new game with a similar style. That'd be awesome.

And, chrono cross doesn't count as a sequel? I've never had the chance to play it, so I'd like to know...

  • I can't decide, should i wait for the cheap $8 virtual console version or get the $30+ DS one.

  • When do you fight him in the game?

  • you fight him at his fortress after defeating all three of his minions. then you can later choose to kill him as frog. (magus turned him into a frog and killed his brother so he wants revenge)

  • Awesome! By the way, Chrono Trigger DS sounds cool. I might get that game sometime.

  • yes! buy it whenever you get your next chance. it is awesome.
