I thought I was watching something special when I saw it, then came the second half. Don't get me wrong, it completely blew me away. His bureaucratic co-workers realizing with each sip of saki at his wake, the impossible task he achieved of getting a swingset to be built in a park. It was so freaking sublime. When the Japanese housewives came to pay him tribute, I lost it. The lowest of the low in the cuture shaming all the others there for the only person that gave a fuck about them.
This movie has some great scenes including where Watanabe walks down the stairs clutching the toy while the girls sing Happy Birthday and the last scene where his work mate trudges sadly along the overpass.
I saw this movie for the first time a couple of days ago, and I cannot believe it was made in '52. It feels more "contemporary" than the movies coming out today.
The short scene here in the beginning with the old man on the street (in the original film without sound!) and almost hit by a loud big truck is copied in Darren Aronofsky's film "The Fountain". Grandmaster Akira Kurosawa influenced many important filmers...
This is my favorite movie of all time. Kurosawa truly is a master-- watching him sob into his pillow in despair and loneliness as the film pans to the shot of a certificate from his employer congratulating him on his decades of service... it makes you realize, there's more to life than mediocrity and mindless labor. You have to do something. And that a film can make you think that? It's truly beautiful.
I had told myself "I have to remember the flame flicker inside my heart" after watching this film. Its ashame. I cannot feel that anymore after that day...
It is touching the heart. And the song that he used to sing that played at 2:05 ..it is so meaningful. It says ..."the life is short .....Girls.. fall in love ...before your flowers die...the life is short ...there is no tomorrow". He is so sad to sings it this way !
This film has touch my heart. It brings to light questions about life and death. In this life that is being dominated by burearcrats its becoming easy to lead a meaningless life. Mediocracy is also becoming the norm. Relativism creeps into our lifes. Our politicians have become rationalist, bent on using reason to justify their ideals and their greed.(Look at the city of Bell)
I recently discovered this film and I've fallen in love with it. I adore the acting. The main character's pathetic, lonely expressions throughout the film are brilliant
Takashi Shimura plays a middle aged bureaucrat who is diagnosed with inoperable bowel cancer. He has only 6 months left to live, the movie follows his struggle to derive meaning from a wasted life.
Kurosawa's cinema speaks on so many levels of depth....Socially, Morally, and even just the majestic nature of purity. He is the end-all best director of all time.
@BeatenAndTortured I guess you like prefer lifeless movies that have shitty generalizations about mankind's fate over, you know, movies worth watching more than once. Hey, it's your life
allgoo19, the song is 'The Song of the Gondola (Gondola No Uta) '. There are in youtube posted lots plays of this song including Miku Hatsune version.
please excuse my memory but I believe an earlier Kurosawa film Drunken Angel? was similar in ways to ikiru, amazing final scene, heck... just watch any Kurosawa film there all beautiful!
I'm lucky I saw this on premium channels, I subsequently could not find a way to order it afterwards. Hope you have better luck! I thought this movie was better than "It's a Wonderful Life,' if only for the reason I first saw this round X-mas time and was of course, considerably moved. It was Beautiful, but his song at the club makes me weep like a baby...
