From Little Things Big Things Grow - Make Poverty History

    05 February 2007

  • I don't know about that other philanthropy

  • Great thoughts. Great ending.

  • Interesting, but most of other TED "talkers" can manage being passionate without crying. I think it kind of breaks the TED spirit and makes this talk poorer.

  • perhaps you're just uncomfortable with a deep emotions that rarely surface around you

  • I guess I've no problems with deep emotions, but I may be wrong, who knows.

Anyway, as I said before, there are many TED talks about much more important topics. These other talkers are also much more passionate - without crying.

When comparing philantropy with the ultimate effects of global climate disruption, I must say this woman is crying for petty bussiness. Philantropy is an important matter nonetheless, but is not as far reaching as the death of millions.

  • Oh, and by the way, as you meant to get personal: I'm an actor, musician and writer, so (if I've any talent at all) I'd say deep emotions are pretty much around me all the time.

Thumbs down for your comment. = P

  • Soros a philanthropist? What a crock!

  • It's funny how people all throughout history, including Katherine Fulton in this video, think that the present is unprecedented and unique, that it is a time in history like no other, that so many things are happening that never happened before. What we see is just another, different aspect of democracy that is being realized: democratic philanthropy. If there were ever going to be any "social singularity", it would be the French Revolution.

  • I think it'd be better to avoid words like philantrophy in the title... it results in 2k views over 3 days. Just a thought.

  • it's talks like this that make me optimistic about the future

  • aw bless her she was breaking up at the end.

  • she knows whats cumming and it aint good

  • Oh when its cumming its all good

  • xD.

  • Only 4 stars, 6:35-7:10 barely touched on the part I was most interested in :( Then some emotional crap at the end about how I can be like her grandfather or something.

Still, I'll check out xigi and xprize.

  • Great talk. Really inspirational at the end there :)

We are bringing about a new Zeitgeist. Check out the Zeitgeist movement, and the Venus Project. We are awake...

  • Seamus is pronounced SAAAMUS

  • shay-mis

  • Seamus is an Irish name and pronounced by Mr Heaney and many others ˈʃeɪməs (in the International Phonetic Alphabet) which approximates to shaymus

  • I've been introduced and have introduced shaymus. That is how he says his name -- indeed.

and Vernor Vinge pronounces his name Vin-gee

But the bigger story that Fulton tells is a good and true one.

  • We should end poverty.

  • Be the change you want to see in the world. -Mahatma Gandhi

It may be the only option.

  • The only person you can change is yourself, rest is bonus.

  • I like that one, thanks for sharing.

  • Definitely.

Discovering one's own mind, finding a state you're content with. Otherwise even philanthropy is a running away from present misery.

I believe that if people dare to stop swimming for a moment, they'll discover there's ground to stand on. From there on we can spread our contentment, not our despair for a better world.

The struggle keeps the struggle alive, but it can stop when it reaches you.

  • its very saddening that these videos see so few hits.

  • I tried to talk about this in my Univercity with my collegues but they simply dont care, they nod and agree but never go for it...

I believe its like that in most of cases

  • The up side is that the people who care enough to watch... care enough to do....

  • Especially considering the people who are watching this are probably the last who need to see this.

  • @branboom

Imagine the future where only half of the viewers would share something that they liked.. (You are the future of philanthropy ) share it.. and share it..

on fb. profile... on.. and on..

Be the change you want to see in the world. -Mahatma Gandhi

  • @branboom I think the same thing about many great videos with inspirational content... its often the frivolous and trivial that goes viral and gains a great audience... the great tragedy of our times, and a reflection of the current state of the human condition, towards its lower end of aspiration, and most base desires and ambition.

  • Good talk.
