I don't understand the strange dialectic between Zizek and Schirmacher. The later does try amend critique just for the sake of it or the acquisition is inconsistency "You did not talk about what you were saying you were going to talk about" (whine)
It is almost like Schirmacher is posing to be posing to be ignorant, that is to signal to fight only at half strength and thereby implying Zizek is not man enough to take a real blow, which of course is bullshit and Schirmacher has no real argument.
I like the humanity of this fellow...who I do not know. I'd love to be in a place where these issues where discussed all the time. But in regard to the comments on Iraq: Saddam never posed a threat to the USA. The American neo-cons, just as they do in domestic politics..set up a STRAW MAN..and then attacked it. Saddam was the straw man.
In regard to pop culture: I think Ginger and Fred..far from being escapist or sentimental..hit at the center of the human heart. Hitler banned them.
Saddam was the wrong man living in the wrong country with te wrong resources at the wrong time. It really never was about Saddam, but most people know that.
There was a Zizek lecture titled "Why only atheists can truly believe" (or something analogous to it). I saw it on youtube a while ago, and it appears to have been deleted. Does anyone know where I can view this lecture? ...thank you
thank you for the comment. the situation of many other lectures in that balance of open ideas and copyright/copyleft is rather delicate. the lecture you are referring to can be found at Sewanee. media (dot) sewanee (dot) edu/htswl/zizek/default.html

on the innocence of patriotism..
'iraq has weapons of mass destruction' 'they are imminently poised to attack the US'
and at a theoretical level..
the balance of power in the middle east is being threatened..
because iraq has the biggest army in the middle east.. 'we (the US) are outgunned'
(this was a strategic lie/iraq has less than half the firepower/ tanks only fired at half the distance of american ones/etc)
but we find ourselves batting for the underdog
