  • Very cooooooooooool lesson!

  • Alan Myers, DEVO's original drummer, often used the open-handed style.

  • @reichmarshall Alan Myers was a machine !!

  • @reichmarshall Well, he was awesome for a reason.

  • I found this not as a drummer but as a DEVO fan. It's still cool!

  • I tried to use my left hand on my hi hat & my brain exploded

  • @boogerbenson its called "open handed"

  • oh now i know^^

  • very nice why do you play the hi hat with the left hand?

  • @1995pg Because if he uses his right hand, he will have to do some crazy maneuvers for those tom parts if he crosses his arms over. He explains this at 1:45

  • @1995pg This is called open-hand playing and is the way of the future. I started out cross-handed like everyone else, but it's one of the worst things we as drummers came up with. Playing open-hand gets rid of the concept of a weak hand, and to quote Dom Famularo, "it's like having two right hands!". It *does* take a lot practice and re-wiring in your brain however. But for those that stick with it, it's like having twice as much kit, and on most kits you can hit any drum or cymbal at any time.
