@pavankat ... I would love to know what you are smoking ... you can't be serious. While the football team isn't great now I need you to remind me of something ... when the Cuse played Rutgers last year who won? Yeah ... that is what I thought ... Rutgirls is the biproduct of a bad schedule. Don't worry your glory days of going 6-6 will be over real soon ...
That was my freshman year at Cuse - I was at every home game including this one and that slaughter of Penn State! Glory days for SU football, and the hoops team too with Seikaly, Coleman, Douglas and the rest.
Rutgers is getting better this season. If we played like we did against UCONN, we would have beaten UNC and Tulane - but that's not important. Syracuse is currently not a great team. Presently, Rutgers is much better than Syracuse. How many bowl games has Syracuse been to in the last 5 years? How about Rutgers? How many top recruits has Syracuse gotten in the past 5 years? How many has Rutgers gotten?
You HAD a good football team and HAVE a good basketball team. That's it though. Nothing more.
@pavankat Syracuse has beaten Rutgers 2 years in a row. Syracuse went to a bowl and won 8 games, Rutgers came in last place in the Big East. Your "glory days" of 2006 are long over. Get over it, suck it up and deal with it. We're back and you're back to sucking.
You know what's funny? Auburn and Syracuse are my favorite programs, and will most likely choose between one of them later on in life, and the first major football game between the two programs is a tie. lol
I was up to the left of the Canadian flag and had inhaled many Dome Foams. Best college football moment I was ever part of by a mile. Pat Dye still pisses me off to this day. Great way to end a bowl game with a 1 point XP to tie the Sugar Bowl on the last play of that game.
At the end of 2008, WVU currently has a seven-game winning streak against Syracuse. In spite of that, WVU still has a losing record in the series. It's 26-30. Ultimately, the decline of Syracuse football has been the worst thing that has ever happened to the Big East.
@sageofsuccess if the cuse can come back wvu and pitt stay where they are historically uconn and usf stay decent the big east would become a hell of a deep conference cause well u know louisville aint gonna be down forever the only "weak" teams left (historically speaking) would be rutgers and cinncy
It was explained as a way to save money and build brand awareness by having all the athletic teams use one name and one logo by former AD Jake Crouthhamel.
One of the many missteps he made at the end of his tenure, which included trying to replace Otto as the school mascot, the uniform deal with Nike to give us some of the ugliest uniforms in college sports, and rewarding the 2003 NCAA Champion basketball team with a banner that looked like a big orange garbage bag.
In 1987 my parents bought WVU HeadCoach Don Neilans house in Morgantown, we lived there for 2 years.Jeff Hostetler, who married Neilan's daughter, showed up on our doorstep looking for Don the day after we moved in.Depending upon the outcome of the game, we found either giftbaskets of food or piles of trash strewn around the front lawn by rabid WVU fans on Sunday mornings during the fall.
I met Major Harris and Reggie Rembert, and we had season tickets to the undefeated 88 season.
Well, folks! I don't know if Syracuse will be the #1 team in the land anytime soon, but glory days in the Dome will be back. Doug Marrone, a 'Cuse grad, has put together an awesome staff and is going to work his tail off with coaching and recruiting.
A long time season ticket holder at SU, I was at this game, and next to the Va Tech game in 98 where McNabb hit Brominski, this was the most electricity I have ever felt in the Dome.
i'm an eagles fan who's seen 2 su qbs come to philly (3 if you count perry patterson's short stint in training camp). i was upset in 91 when kotite kept brad goebel instead of mcpherson. i don't think goebel won one game.
Well, folks, there will DEFINITELY be a new coach for 2009. And, I would bet that this will be the most thorough and important coaching search in school history. Donovan McNabb is going to be one of the main people on the search committee, which should help a lot. I am interested to see who they will bring in. I like that guy, Turner Gill, at Buffalo:
What a great season that was! I remember nearly breaking my leg rushing the field after that one. Does anyone remember the Penn State game that year? Amazing! Good times and bad-can't help but love the cuse and the Big East. (But enough of the bad times already Dr. Gross and Mr. Robinson)
Some great battles over the years. I am a WVU fan who has a ton of respect for the Syracuse program. I think they will get back in the mix in a couple of years. No matter what the record of the Orangeman may be or how bad of a season they may be having, when they play my boys from WVU..I always get nervous. You can never overlook the Orangemen. Of course we are rivals but I always cheer for the Big East teams unless they are playing WVU. I want the Big East to remain a top conference. Peace.
that was the best game of 1987 for college football, and one of the best in the 1980"s and if auburn would had missed that last minute tieing fieldgoal, the cuse probably would have been national champs that year. and we all remember the following year 88" WVU blasted syracuse on their way to an undefeated season and played for the national title against notre dame. the cuse was tuff stuff during the late 80"s and most of the 90"s they were respected by most and feared by some. WVU#1
back when Syracuse was actually good in football :( hopefully they can bounce back soon. Also look how old the dome looks even though it was practically brand new lol, the lighting looked horrible back then.
Congrats to Syracuse QB Don McPherson, who was the QB in this game, was runner-up to Tim Brown in the Heisman Trophy race, and who led Syracuse to a 11-0-1 record in this 1987 season. It was announced that he will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December of 2008!
Who is going to be your teams Quarterback next fall? I was at the Cuse - Wash game(Husky fan) I didn't think much of that Robinson kid but he may mature.
BTW Your fans all class by the way....one of the more pleasent experiences i've had going to an away game
It was announced on 11/28/07 that Coach Greg Robinson will be back at Syracuse in 2008. However, don't worry. The AD made it clear that, if Syracuse isn't much improved next season, there will be a new coach for 2009.
Of course! Ernie Davis! That movie sounds great, and hopefully, it will help remind Syracuse how awesome they once were and make them work even harder!
For Syracuse to become a bowl bound team every year the following things will need to happen:
1. Syracuse needs to get a coach who can both COACH and RECRUIT very well.
2. Syracuse needs to get money and build a 50,000-60,000 outside football stadium. This would help so much with recruiting and gameday atmosphere. Most players would prefer to get fresh air in their lungs on a crisp, fall day.
And, I am a Syracuse fan, and I will admit it will take loads of effort with money, getting a good coach, and recruiting. However, if Syracuse takes the extra mile, I know that it can be done! One must remember that, in this day and age, the term "easy sell" when recruiting for college sports is more in effect than ever, and Syracuse is definitely not one of the easiest sells for top football talent right now for several reasons.
gymman1031 i think the cuse will be back some day, but it will be a slow process. and i agree with a lot of SU fans syracuse needs an outdoor stadium, thats the college football atmosphere. and although i am a fanatic WVU fan, i really respect the way syracuse did their non-confrence football scheduling over the last 6 years. they took on the heavy weights, and played alot of the top teams in the nation the past 6 years. and i have always respected that. WVU#1
Thanks for your positive comments, tauras88d. I think that Syracuse has too much tradition to be down forever. And, if Syracuse doesn't go at least 6-6(or possibly 5-7) in 2008, there will definitely be a coaching change. Although Pitt has been WVU's biggest rival over the years, Syracuse and WVU had a rivalry of their own. They certainly had some great battles. I hope that Syracuse gets good so we can see them again! Good luck to WVU! They are going to be great in 2008.
gymman1031 thanks for replying yeah the cuse and wvu really had some monumental battles over the years, and most of the time there were high stakes involved, and no 2 teams in the east had national title asperations like wvu and the cuse did in the late 80"s so it was a heated rivalry. and i remember some big orange games, like how they stuck it to michigan and had tennesse beat during their national title year but lost it in the last minute. the cuse will be strong again someday. WVU#1
Thanks again, tauras88d. I think that 'Cuse will be back in time. However, it will take a new and good coach to get it done. In addition, the coach will have to be a good recruiter, too. In this day and age, 'Cuse is not one of the easiest sells for top talent:
1. Syracuse is not one of the top college towns.
2. The winters are cold.
3. The team plays indoors.
4. The State of New York is not a high school football factory. Lacrosse and hockey are much bigger.
God, I miss those great Syracuse years! This may have been 'Cuse's best team ever. It seems like the program hasn't had much swagger since Donovan McNabb graduated. Syracuse needs a new coach to bring back that swagger. Skip Holtz, who has done a great job at UCONN and ECU, would do a great job, IMHO. Does anyone agree?
Probably the two best programs in Big East football in the late 80s

also part of the big easts decline overall was when miami, va tech and boston college left the conference
