some guys jacked money out of my dads car, and their was a dog outside. naturally i responded with "those fucking amatuers. You left your dog, idiots!"
I've searched through every single comment attached to this video, and not once have I come across a satisfactory explanation for why this scene should be considered funny. Then people wonder why as Wes Anderson fans they're called 'pretentious jerks'.
For almost everything I've ever found funny I can articulate the mechanism of the joke, and explain the reasoning behind it - something which a great many Wes Anderson fans seem to be unable to do when talking about parts of his films.
@sameel3 Fine. First of all, Zizzou made up the dog's name on the spot. Then, there was the way that Hennessey whacked another person's dog out of nowhere -- it was unexpected, and the way he deadpans this exchange further makes it funny. Also, there is the fact that he is striking a whimpering, three-legged dog with a newspaper -- Hennessey's character is that he is a smug asshole (maybe he likes Wes Anderson movies?) and this scene feeds into that.
@spidergoose yeah I was making fun of him, not you. Your breakdown of why this is funny made me like it even more, what gets me is the pure brutality of the smack, it sound like he's trying to kill it, and then the way Bill Murray glances up at him right after is too funny for words.
You're underlying implication must be right. We must just have different criteria for humour. All of those things are appreciably present, without need for explanation, they just aren't a cause for laughter with me.
I laughed so fucking hard when i first saw this. It was unexpected. Clever, too. This is how i tell it to my friends who have not seen this movie, "Okay, so the scene is with Jeff Goldblum, and he folds a news paper and smacks a whining, 3-legged dog in the side of the face to shut him up." Everybody starts laughing.
The definition of a cutaway from Webster and in film terminology is-In film, a cutaway is the interruption of a continuously filmed action by inserting a view of something else. It is usually, although not always, followed by a cutback to the first shot. Cut on Action usually refers to cutting to the other side of the 180 degree rule, Such as running off to open a door, and then cutting on to another shot of the door opening and the character entering.
@filmguy531 What's happening in this scene isn't what is being defined in your definition. They cut from a shot of Goldblum to a tighter shot of the same thing. If it was a cutaway, they would be cutting from the shot of Goldblum to something else happening in the scene, for example, Murray's facial reaction, or someone else in the same space as the scene. In this case, they cut from a wide shot of Goldblum to a tighter shot of the same thing and they cut on the action of Goldblum swinging.
@RobertGoulet298 Yes, it does, it does cut to Murray's facial reaction. A cutaway many times can be a wide shot to an extreme closeup. What you are referring to is ironically "A Dog Cut" which is when an editor is missing film or the shot is incomplete so they cut to a random object to avoid a jump cut. Its not a typical cutaway because its a Wes Anderson film, but it is still a cutaway.
@filmguy531 Okay. You're probably right. But what I was describing can be a cutaway too, can't it? It doesn't have to be a "dog cut" as you called it. If the editor cuts to a reaction of another character in the scene for emotional effect or something like that, and then back to the original shot, that's a cutaway, no?
@filmguy531 This isn't a dog cut. There is continuous movement which is shown through the two cuts, and therefore is not a cut to an inanimate object. Robert Goulet was a bit closer than you, as it is a 'match on action'. That's film art 101, you arrogant douche-nozzle.
(if you want a citation--->Film Art, 8th Ed., Bordwell and Thompsen, pp.236-237.)
Maybe its a continuous cut to someone who knows nothing about film, but that is a cut, and in the absolute case is still a cutaway. Match on Action is the same thing as cutting on action, which in can also be called the Dog Cut. Go Back to film school, then again they dont teach the Dog Cut there.
Mmmm, so your argument is "you're wrong because they don't teach my made up film term at university". Bravo. You are correct in arguing that this is a cut, clearly it is. However, Goulet is right. What is happening in this scene is a match on action, an action is begun before the cut, in shot A, and is shown through B. There is no "missing film" and the shot is not "incomplete". If I had to guess, they just didn't want to actually hit the dog.
@filmguy531 filmguy, you probably know all the theory but can't do anything good in practice. the problem with film school is that they teach all the rules and students feel that if they break them they're bad directors or editors, etc. well, this movie is just a HUGE MIDDLE FINGER to all of you, good for nothing filmmakers.
having watched the film..it´s entirely in Goldblums character to smack the dog, as he wants an attentive audience. And it is a funny scene, but the bond company stooge " we f***ing stole it man" is better. Mmmm.
smacking a dog with a newspaper is a common trick to make sure he stops doing something annoying / something that he's not supposed to do. This scene also displays (once again) Goldblum's superior knowledge of the animal kingdom.
That's fucking funny shit, but I would kick his ass if it were real. The best part is when he sees the bond company stooge drinking from his espresso machine...."We fucking stole it man."
Yeah that's a hilarious part too. One of the funniest parts was when he found out his cat died he's like "How did it happen?" his friends like "A rattlesnake bit it in the throat!" LMAO
hahahhah this scene cracks me lol. I love this movie. I guess it is this kind of subtle jokes that people find it hard to understand in Wes's movies. Having said this, even myself get to appreciate it in second view,ng of the movie!
amazing.
