Some people choose to believe in a God. I'm not one of them, but I think that a person's religion shouldn't be on the resume as pertains to any subject. It's obvious that the lecture isn't tainted with God over biology, so it should have no effect. Plus, he might just be saying that. You'll never know, which is a good thing.
@CortexEffect94 He was using it as a saying, not literally. You'll notice he says "a blink in the eye of the lord as one says." It is simply meant as, yeah 150,000 years sounds like a long time but compared to how the earth has existed it really is not that long. He wasn't implying that there is a God, but if there were an eternal God, 150,000 years would not be a long period of time.

Watson and Crick owe a good amount of their discovery to Rosalind Franklin, who took the first good picture of DNA, which led to the discovery of the structure of DNA. In fact, it was a great picture, done by X-ray crystallography. She was a pioneer, and she hardly gets any recognition.

I'm sorry, but this looks like a miserable education. Look how all the students are crammed together like cattle. They are practically on top of each other.
Miserable.
At my community college, we have state of the art projectors (with touch screens), and there are only 20 or so students in a class (a lot of individual instruction). My biology professors were just as good as this guy (if not better). My tuition: $2.5K
These fancy schools are a scam. The product of brilliant marketing.
Also, another fun statistic: The average median starting pay for a student who did 2 years at a community college then transferred to a different in state public school is 49,000 a year. Average median pay rate for an MIT grad? 57,000. My tuition per semester? 2.5 grand. Yours? 50.
In a cheap community college I've been to, I could literally smell marijuana just walking to class and hear gangster-like people listening to rap music. I could hear them yelling and laughing like little kids. (tuition ~ $2.5 K)
In USC (University of Southern California) it is a lot different. People are quieter and the place is more serene. (tuition ~50k)
It's not just the instructors, the students matter too. In top universities, you are less likely to get bad influences.
@taarec10 Rap music tends to contain lots of profanity and the contents in rap music are very often related to "low-life" things --like pimps, gangsters, and prostitutes.
Besides when I mentioned ganster-like people. In my mind I thought of something like this " 5 black people, 2 Mexican, less than 1 white or Asian."
@taarec10 Maybe in your mind gangster-like people are a bunch of black people, but not to me. Anybody wearing baggy pants and jerseys are considered gangster-like to me.
In top universities, you are less likely to get bad influenced cause most idiots and crackheads are filtered out by community colleges. And you are less likely to get disturbed by people who don't care about studying.
If you let a "gangster-like idiot crackhead" influence you, then I would say you're not too bright.
With the assclowns aside, which are in the minority at my school, the actual education quality is just as good as anywhere else. But every school is different.
@ZamatoElite They don't necessarily have to influence you, but something more subtle could just be as bothersome. Maybe you just want to avoid talking to such people, but you are surrounded by them. Or they try to be friends with you and you are really thinking "no way." Or you want to avoid hearing their conversations. These get in the way with studies too don't you think?
Maybe your college contains less assclowns that's why you are not complaining.
@ZamatoElite If you were to go to Cambridge University, Harvard, Cal Tech, and other top universities you'll run into less of such people. That could increase your quality of life.
this video is interesting, however, the profesor mix the facts with the teory of evolution rather than describe the facts about the cells and them explain his personal conception about how life originated.
this video is interesting, however, the profesor mix the facts with the teory of evolution rather than describe the facts about the cells and them explain his personal conception about how life originated.
Evolution is a FACT, And as Guitariffz83 said.. If you think he was mixing his personal conceptions into his lecture your wrong, that is like saying he mixed his personal conceptions into his lecture because he said Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic are 2 types of cells... its a FACT. For more information i suggest the book "The Greatest Show on Earth" by richard Dawkins
@NexXTDoor keep saying things like that. they really dont have to be doing this for those of us that cant afford a high quality education. so go ahead and encourage mit to stop investing hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide education to us for free.
i know. i am just very pissed off at the school i am attending right now. i am frustrated that they charge an arm and a leg to give a very unimpressive education and here we have MIT, every science major's wet dream, giving lessons for free. sorry if i took it out on you. but this is the first lecture of the class, after all.
@SheisseFicken i think, his comment is right hahas.. about mit not chipping in a bit more to show the clips that the professor is teaching. but thats opinion and shouldn't be held against anyone.
if you dont see the slides on any lecture, open wikipedia, type in the names. and keep this page on to hear his voice. so now ya can see and hear the class
VimisiDigitalMedia - Your response consisting of derisive ridicule is typical of somebody whose religion has just been challenged. Never the less, I find your $1,000,000 argument to be rather weak. Ideally, no professor would offer false evidence no matter how much he was paid because it would contradict his guiding principles. Furthermore, most professors lack the skills of industrial scientist anyway - the only thing they can provide proof of is their lack of common sense.
SMNCHris I was reading what you said and the statement that no professor would offer false evidence no matter how much he was paid, is itself weak. The fact is many proffessors work for pay and that in itself is a form of prositution. Proffesors are humans and Proffessors teach. Many people teach things and do things for money and will atler there teachings for pay. Example you had teachers teaching Evolution even though they personally believe in Creationism.
Why do I feel like I still have single cell ancestors living along side me EVERYDAY? - LOL - Could it be that "so-called psychics" are still able to convince dolts, uh, I mean people, that they have some sort of gift? Some "supernatural" power? - And even when offered $1,000,000.00, can't produce a SINGLE demonstration of ANYTHING supernatural under proper scientific observing conditions? Is that why? Are some of our fellow multi-cell humanoids THAT fucked up in the head, Professor? If so, WHY?!
Oh my goodness MIT and other Ivy League schools are so over rated "we want the top students of the classes" when the true genius is the one who is making a D+ because he is not properly challenge. While they are teaching basic biology and anatomy im on the brink of discovering and new way to classify the brain and exploiting basic flaws in Newtons laws of motion.....oh but im just average person. Class rots the mind and its creativity the best way to learn is to teach your self.
"im on the brink of discovering and new way to classify the brain and exploiting basic flaws in Newtons laws of motion....."
It's easy for you to make outrageous claims with no supporting evidence on the internet.
It's too bad that actual scientific advancement takes more than jackasses saying "I'm on the brink of discovering new things or revolutionizing the way things work"
I hope this helps me a lot, i'm going to watch the whole playlist and take notes, I leave for college in August to major in biology, my first two classes are chem I and BIO I, I never took either in High school. I picked this major so I can learn something new but iv'e been told with out the HS courses i'm sure to fail. I hope these help. This one got me feeling a little more upbeat about going through with it
depends where you're going to school. biology and chemistry in general aren't inherently interesting, and general college courses in those subjects can be painfully boring if you try to understand why it matters. but with faith that fundamentals are, well, fundamental and if you truly hunger for knowledge then you'll most likely excel and go far with it
"...biology and chemistry aren't inherently interesting..." ?!?!?
Granted, some teachers and profs seem to be able to drain every drop of interest from a topic, but what could possibly be more interesting than the study of life?
If you are not interested, no prob, but don't blame it on the subject(s).
Well I hope that's not true because I'm in the exact same boat as you. I actually took chem and bio in HS but the teachers were totally inept and I could have done a better job teaching the class with my limited knowledge from middle school. The school basically hired one of the subs, handed him a book he didn't understand, and told him to teach it. What a joke. Looking forward to competent teachers in college.
watson and crick took others ideas and used little of their own to formulate the idea of the double helixial DNA (they mostly used others) FUCK WATSON AND CRICK
you are a moron. thats what some people do, they come along, see what others cannot see and make it all work together, what do you think Crick died doing? meta analysis of consciousness studies. dude calm the fuck down and read when ever you feel like spewing waste from your .... well what ever you call that thing on your shoulders... a second asshole?
I presume you are refering to Rosalind Franklin? And their collegues inc. Maurice Wilkins at Kings. Research is never conducted in a vacuum and these people were recognised for their imput (albeit posthumously in Franklins case).
P.S. Your style of delivery leads alot to be desired. Are you simply striving for a reaction? Did you not get regonition for your own achievements?
I learn by asking questions. A lecture is 100% useless to me. It's just a professor showing off. Congratulations, you've mastered the subject. Good for you.

It is a joke:
they overwhelm students so much that they have no time for extra circulars. So come graduate school admission time, they are pretty much at a disadvantage than others like from Princeton and other good schools where the work load is much more sensible.
MIT should revise their "vicious" approach to education.
if you knew anything about MIT you only have about 48 hours of a week devoted to class homewok etc. leaving 120 hours, plenty of time for "extra circulars"and other activities
They have an education policy, an educational philosophy, and an educational method. If that doesn't work for you, don't go! MIT is not a joke, if you think it is, you are closed minded in your interpretation of higher education. There are different universities with different strengths, if MIT's do not apply to you, then it is simply incompatible with your learning style. It doesn't make it a joke; such an assumption makes you a joke.
What you say is rather accurate, at least in part. MIT, like most universities, have their curriculum set up by their faculty, they are the masters of the campus, at least in most universities. They more or less aprove eachothers existance, at least mutally, so you tend to have different environments in different universities. MIT is known to be a technical institute, and thus their strengths lie in that.
This is an intro. Obviously they aren't going to deal with serious stuff until later, so the comment about it being basically a junior high school level bio class is China is stupid. I'm sorry but American biologists have contributed far more to the sciences than Chinese ones have. Educate yourself.
Actually, there are many geniuses in China, but they can not become great scientists you said because of the education rules...We are so tired but we have to do something we don't like, for the competition is so fierce...So more and more students here want to study in US & UK.They can do something they like absorbedly.
Yeah? How would the UK and US be today if it where not for the arabic numbersystem, the roman and greek engingeering, the chinese invention of gunpowder and the first compass, the german rockets engineers and phycisists, etc...? There arent only the UK and US that have improved technology and explored our existence, the whole of humanity have. Dont fool yourself.
I been to China quite regularly , please try stating something to someone who has no idea how your country works. It is advanced biology in your country. I know you would like to try to impress people but honestly you don't. You have something in America we like to call B.S. syndrome however with something called reality it goes away. So go away.
I think thats terrible. Lecturers shouldn't have to change their syllabus for some religious crackpots. Why the hell would people who dont believe in evolution be taking biology anyway? life only makes sense in light of evolution.
They don't care for how rational evolution is to life. They're more concerned over where they're going to go when they die, as if it's of any matter when you do in fact pass away. You cease to fucking exist. Now, get over it and do something for yourself, plz. But, eh. We're slowly moving into a much more Satanic era. Soon we'll see the end of all this ridiculous discretion.

It's not as bad as you think. I was in Bio classes in undergrad and heard the theories on evolution without any hush. I would have also liked to hear some competing arguments, if only for half-a-lecture.
I lived in California for most of my life, and received a fairly thorough education (in the 7th grade no less!) on evolution. It was an essential part of the curriculum.
However, when I moved to Texas and talked to my girlfriend about it (she had gone to school here,) she said that it was taught to her as just some idea, but didn't have any factual footing.
Needless to say, I told her that it was the other way around, and she knows it now. Still sucks though.
Yeah, all the conservative states are full of a large number of stupid people, and the schools are state-funded, meaning they have to teach what the stupid people want them to teach.
Texas schools would still be teaching that the world was flat if it wasn't so easy to see it's round using satellite cameras or high-flying airplanes.

MrZhuKeeper 2 years ago
How is rap in any way related to bad behavior. And we all know you are trying to say black people when you say "ganster like"
taarec10 2 years ago
@taarec10 Rap music tends to contain lots of profanity and the contents in rap music are very often related to "low-life" things --like pimps, gangsters, and prostitutes.
Besides when I mentioned ganster-like people. In my mind I thought of something like this " 5 black people, 2 Mexican, less than 1 white or Asian."
MrZhuKeeper 2 years ago
Death Metal relates to death, gothic, Satan, and evil
taarec10 2 years ago
@taarec10 Maybe in your mind gangster-like people are a bunch of black people, but not to me. Anybody wearing baggy pants and jerseys are considered gangster-like to me.
MrZhuKeeper 2 years ago

@ZamatoElite
In top universities, you are less likely to get bad influenced cause most idiots and crackheads are filtered out by community colleges. And you are less likely to get disturbed by people who don't care about studying.
MrZhuKeeper 2 years ago
If you let a "gangster-like idiot crackhead" influence you, then I would say you're not too bright.
With the assclowns aside, which are in the minority at my school, the actual education quality is just as good as anywhere else. But every school is different.
ZamatoElite 2 years ago
@ZamatoElite They don't necessarily have to influence you, but something more subtle could just be as bothersome. Maybe you just want to avoid talking to such people, but you are surrounded by them. Or they try to be friends with you and you are really thinking "no way." Or you want to avoid hearing their conversations. These get in the way with studies too don't you think?
Maybe your college contains less assclowns that's why you are not complaining.
MrZhuKeeper 2 years ago
@ZamatoElite If you were to go to Cambridge University, Harvard, Cal Tech, and other top universities you'll run into less of such people. That could increase your quality of life.
MrZhuKeeper 2 years ago

VimisiDigitalMedia - Your response consisting of derisive ridicule is typical of somebody whose religion has just been challenged. Never the less, I find your $1,000,000 argument to be rather weak. Ideally, no professor would offer false evidence no matter how much he was paid because it would contradict his guiding principles. Furthermore, most professors lack the skills of industrial scientist anyway - the only thing they can provide proof of is their lack of common sense.
smnchris 2 years ago

Class rots the mind and its creativity the best way to learn is to teach your self.
kingmasterwill 2 years ago

This one got me feeling a little more upbeat about going through with it
DoritosOFdeath 2 years ago
depends where you're going to school. biology and chemistry in general aren't inherently interesting, and general college courses in those subjects can be painfully boring if you try to understand why it matters. but with faith that fundamentals are, well, fundamental and if you truly hunger for knowledge then you'll most likely excel and go far with it
cotay15 2 years ago
"...biology and chemistry aren't inherently interesting..." ?!?!?
Granted, some teachers and profs seem to be able to drain every drop of interest from a topic, but what could possibly be more interesting than the study of life?
If you are not interested, no prob, but don't blame it on the subject(s).
Jefferdaughter 2 years ago 3
Well I hope that's not true because I'm in the exact same boat as you. I actually took chem and bio in HS but the teachers were totally inept and I could have done a better job teaching the class with my limited knowledge from middle school. The school basically hired one of the subs, handed him a book he didn't understand, and told him to teach it. What a joke. Looking forward to competent teachers in college.

It is a joke:
they overwhelm students so much that they have no time for extra circulars. So come graduate school admission time, they are pretty much at a disadvantage than others like from Princeton and other good schools where the work load is much more sensible.
MIT should revise their "vicious" approach to education.
sjerads 2 years ago
if you knew anything about MIT you only have about 48 hours of a week devoted to class homewok etc. leaving 120 hours, plenty of time for "extra circulars"and other activities

eggotproductions 2 years ago
They have an education policy, an educational philosophy, and an educational method. If that doesn't work for you, don't go! MIT is not a joke, if you think it is, you are closed minded in your interpretation of higher education. There are different universities with different strengths, if MIT's do not apply to you, then it is simply incompatible with your learning style. It doesn't make it a joke; such an assumption makes you a joke.
Xenophanes21 2 years ago 2
What you say is rather accurate, at least in part. MIT, like most universities, have their curriculum set up by their faculty, they are the masters of the campus, at least in most universities. They more or less aprove eachothers existance, at least mutally, so you tend to have different environments in different universities. MIT is known to be a technical institute, and thus their strengths lie in that.

I think thats terrible. Lecturers shouldn't have to change their syllabus for some religious crackpots. Why the hell would people who dont believe in evolution be taking biology anyway? life only makes sense in light of evolution.
dicktothedawk 3 years ago 8
They don't care for how rational evolution is to life. They're more concerned over where they're going to go when they die, as if it's of any matter when you do in fact pass away. You cease to fucking exist. Now, get over it and do something for yourself, plz. But, eh. We're slowly moving into a much more Satanic era. Soon we'll see the end of all this ridiculous discretion.

It's not as bad as you think. I was in Bio classes in undergrad and heard the theories on evolution without any hush. I would have also liked to hear some competing arguments, if only for half-a-lecture.
Maxfli82 2 years ago
Depends on where you are, really.
Still sucks though.
sirkamon 2 years ago
Yeah, all the conservative states are full of a large number of stupid people, and the schools are state-funded, meaning they have to teach what the stupid people want them to teach.
Texas schools would still be teaching that the world was flat if it wasn't so easy to see it's round using satellite cameras or high-flying airplanes.
