one im a diver and i will say this to 123johnson we do train that is so bogus to even say we dont okay its made up of conditioning also know as dry land practices board work, strong mental build and the ability to keep tight and perfect through the dive and in order to do that we work out lower and upper body abs to keep straight legs for board and arms for twist and as well as flexability we need gymnastics and ballet training
Grew up diving. LOVED IT! LOVED the 3 meter. I miss it so. Lived at the pool all summer. Was in the AAU. But was too tall for olympic trials. :( Don't care. still can at least do a front 1 and a half and not kill myself. :) Thanks for that. (Btw, I can do it free, pike or tuck)
i remember when i used to do it. i had sessions every day 4hours after schoold then at least one day during the weekend if it was saturday then 7hrs if sunday then 8hrs. at young age it was all building the body shape perfect for diving. you still got to have plenty of strenght to perform half of the dives and then there is acrobatics and gimnastics to help with the actual evolutions. it was hard but i loved every single second of it!!!
Ya we work out everyother day on legs with weights and do alot of abs that means hundreds of pike and tuck ups a day. along with tons of wall sits and hollow holds =(
@Trashjack101 Yes they do! Divers train mostly on their abs and lower body, unless you're a platform diver (which requires upperbody for handstand positions). Divers also use trampoline for their air sense as well as ballet (as an option). I can not believe that 123johnston said something like this.
im not an olympic diver, so i don't have the same training as they do. ive never had that type of training. i do gymnastics to help my air sense, but here in florida, we don't have much diving (except in larger cities such as ft. lauderdale, orlando, etc) so we don't have the facilities to do such training. im sorry to misinform you
So if you're a gymnast, doesn't that involve working out too? I believe so. You are working out your legs, your hands, basically every part of your body. Alongside that, if you were to devote yourself into working out your abs and quads mostly (if you are a springboard diver), those will benefit. At least you were honest and I can give you props for that part.
I would not say that Floridians "don't have much diving". If I recall correctly, you got a powerhouse in Jevon Tarantino that just recently pulled off a Forward 4 1/2 Pike Dive in jest. AND, you have a Coral Springs cutie that now resides in The Woodlands named Kassidy Cook that is really rippin. So I would not say that there is not much diving in Florida. Perhaps not where you live, but it's around there.
@Trashjack101 We always workout!!!! we are power machines and diving is a sport we rock and nothiung will change that...... try living like a diver for one day.... its hell but i love it:)
My dive team just has a normal hurdle but we see those hurdles a lot and we just call them skippy hurdles :) Probably not the correct name for them but it works
in all of my career as being a diver, i have never been able to find any information (in detail) that could help me with my hurdles online (reading, video, demonstrations, ie youtube, blog, or whatever) i just think its the way i cut the hurdle to the music. sorry i couldn't help you more.
All different groups are using them, men women, jr, sr. I've seen kids in as young as C and D learning them.
I think it's pretty easy to see why- when they're done right they're amazingly effective. I'm not teaching them because none of my athletes are strong enough, but i played around with it on the board and it's tough (i'm not really strong enough for it either).
Usually if someone trains a hop hurdle and it's good they'll use it on any forward/reverse instead of switching hurdles
I've tried doing them and I don't think you need to be strong to do them.
I think you need to be coordinated and your timing has to be perfect. If you continue to practice them, and are doing them properly, you will get better. Repetition, when done properly, is the key to success,
Strength is measured in how much you could lift in one attempt, like bench press, squats...
Springboard divers don't have to be excessively strong, they need to be coordinated and brave.
I still think alot of strength is needed because of how much harder the hop-press is. Watch the initial press at 1:03, it takes increadible amounts of strength to move the board that far back and get it going (which is pressing the board as hard as you can in one attempt)
It's not strength that makes a "Hop Hurdle" difficult. It's more of a coordinated effort to quicky load then unload the board that gets the board moving, then time it perfectly so your hurdle is timed with the boards rocking.
A 50 pound, 5-10 year old could easily do it with practice.
Springboard divers are not known for their strength. They are known for their coordination, timing, kinesthetic awareness, risk taking...
Again, just my opinion based on decades of experience.
I absolutely agree that it takes alot of coordination and timing, but i still think strength is an important part of the equation. We'll just have to agree to disagree:) I do really enjoy discussing diving theory and biomechanics though, so i feel like we could keep this going through messages instrad of endlessly commenting on this montage.
I've also spent time on trampolines. Which are a great practicing tool for diving.
When jumping up and down and trying to get higher and higher and stay in balance, it's not strength that makes you go high in the air, it's a coordinated effort of perfect timing which sends you airborne.
yes, it has to do with mechanical resonance... perfect timing of something to get more and more reaction out of something. like the earthquake machine in mythbusters.
As I was practicing my "Hop Hurdle" on the 1 meter board, I stepped with my left foot, hopped to depress the board with my right foot, and fell off the board, into the water to my left, pushing off the concrete pool wall so I would not make contact with it.
With my head near the concrete edge of the pool, it felt like a near death experience or one of those, "Why did I hve to do that?" moments.
Haha something happened to me like that. Coach told me "Keep your head up in your hurdle" meaning right before I left the board, but I thought it was throughout the whole hurdle so I brought my leg up and shifted to the left, landed on my butt on the board, scraped my foot on the way down, and fell off sideways into the water. Still have a scar on my foot too! :) haha
No i haven't been able to find any, are you training or coaching currently?I could probably find someone who might be able to expalin them to you better and give you leadups/progresssions.
I'm in a Springboard Diving class and have taken diving classes and jumped off boards since a young child. On and off for 45 years or so.
I'm terrified of diving. Scares the living heck out of me. I know my limits and stay within them. I can't afford to injure myself. Healing takes too long.
I enjoy the hurdle, blasting off the 1 & 3 meter, hitting the water, watching the other divers and feet first entries. I know I won't sprain, dislocate my arthritic shoulders by going in feet first.
no, i just did that for the music. i don't know what a flying approach is. nobody could ever explain it to me, or show me what it was during my time in diving (over the three years i did it)
thank you, i made another one two weeks ago. the timing is pretty good and it flows perfectly with the music (I think), but the lyrics don't go with it. ill send it to you when i upload it if you want. tell me what you think. do you make videos? i checked out your page... are you in your videos?

Is that considered a legal hurdle?
And who's doing them? Men, women, younger, high school, college...? On certain types of dives and not on others...?
She's really cranking up her height. Wish I was could hurdle like that.

It's called a skip or hop hurdle, they're getting pretty popular. They take mad strength and balance though. It's very popular at CAMO

Here are a couple of defintions of strength from the interenet. There are many more.
1. Muscular Strength is defined by the ability of your body's muscle to generate force in a short period of time.
2. To define Strength in layman's terms, it would go like this: The ability to exert Maximum Force contraction of your working muscles.
