you are THE MAN Vesper ive been trying to find videos to understand what the pros talk about and how to improve my game and you are it my friend thank you for taking the time and patience to put these up much obliged my friend
This game is ridiculous in the amount of thinking you have to do in a fraction of a second. Maybe its just me being new to the games and the controls are not yet second nature to me but I'm very impressed non the less.
these videos have helped me a lot in completing the trials. which is good since thats what i am watching for. and shortcuts are helping until i can get an arcade stick or fight pad. its hard to do hcb with an analog stick but easy and fast to do df+b. helps my ibuki game a lot
Shortcuts are pretty lame. The only characters who really need them are Circle motion characters like Zangief and charge characters like my main Vega as well as Guile and Dee Jay. And yes that motion with Guile demonstrated in this video also work on dpads atleast on the ps3.
In an earlier video you said that you do not recommend using shortcuts, but in this video you seem to be advocating them. Just curious do you yourself use them, and do you recommend their use. If not what are the disadvantages of using shortcuts? I mainly play with ryu btw.
with negative edge, can you input a HP for example while your in a block stun or in the recoiling animation frames of something you've just done? so you press it down with out it comming out essentially?
omgah hhah i dint kno u could hold down the button and do the motion + release then do it will come out..thats gunna be really helpfull!! thanks for making this vid!

this intro is a lot better. no offense but your trials intro reminds me of the golden girls or something like that. but then again, I've never really been around a "community" of fighting game fans or more than 2 people for that matter. none of my friends appreciate fighting games so i only play online. :( anyway, how do you guys know all this? do you figure it out on your own by a lot of practice/research? :( i'd do anything for a fight stick. sadly i can't afford one.
@acidglow It's just another euphamism the scrubs use to make shit sound more palatable, like tick throws = 'meta game' or fireball spamming = 'zoning'.
I can't believe I never thought of negative-edging to counter fbs...thanks! This'll help a lot with Rufus' and Adon's second Ultras. Beats constantly buffering d,d/b,b in anticipation of fireballs.
I always thought that the ultra command for Flash Explosion DID end on up back!
so I've been doing it "wrong" for ages! good thing it workes, too bad ppl can do SRK's from crouch -_-
will we get tutorials on super canceling with charge characters? I can't Flashkick xx double flash... don't have a clue! Sonic boom xx double flash is easy *good thing I main Dudley!*
Ah now I remember why I remembered (charge) db, uf, db, uf +3K as an alternative input, you can use that to cancel flash kick into super, you just wedge a kick button in after the first uf.
For other charge characters (Boxer, Honda, Blanka, Chun, etc) the same theory applies. You do the super motion with an extra attack button wedged in after the first forward input for the normal. The charge will stick with the remaining inputs as long as you input the rest fast enough.
Good stuff, I didn't realize negative edge went that far. I hate the shortcuts though, you do a crouching move and get a super with certain characters.
Street fighter has a nasty learning curve. Until you can do special moves with a descent success rate, the game IS NO FUN. Once you can do that you get hooked, so capcom lowered that initial bar with shortcuts. Same reason street fighter 4 has no parrys. More players is better
DF,DF doesn't work on its own, its DF,D,DF for the crouched shortcut. A shortcut SRK is any combination of 3 inputs that include F,D,F. You can do DF, DB, UF for fun, hell you can even do HCB, UF and you'll get SRK.
@DaDoppen Yeah I was waiting for someone to mention that, which is correct. However it is not possible to hit the solid 3-3 anyways so no point of explaining that.
@VesperArcade What do you mean by "3-3"? You can see in the inputs that you didn't hit df, df anyway. You could've used df, d, df as the example, which I think is easier than df, N, df even if it was possible. Anyway, you need to have 3 different inputs for a SRK, so df, df could never work. It would be nice if you didn't perpetuate this "shortcut" even though you said you know it's incorrect.
@Maccam16 It is the correct shortcut, because no matter how you do it, df, df will come out as at least 3 inputs and whatever they are, will result in a dp.. As an explanation to this, Capcom said: MOAR SHORYUKEN!
@ragger lol, that isn't true though. You can do df, df + p and not get an SRK, especially if you're using a joystick like the one in the video. I've tested it before because this debate forever refuses to end.
@ragger No exactly. Crapcom actually said "MOAR SALES!!", thus they made the game appeal to the Gen Wii and Halotard demographics by simplifying it to the point where the game is a joke fighter full of face-palm characters wearing clownfits, spamming one or two moves ad nauseum.
@Sablicious lol you, sir, are a hategod. lol. If you can't beat someone spamming one or two moves, and that someone usually plays either ryu or ken, i suggest you block and learn your anti-airs.
@ragger Who said I "can't beat" anyone, let alone today's Gen Wii Kentards?! o_0
What I said WAS the game is kiddified beyond the pale for anyone old enough to have played the franchise in its heyday & the core play mechanic is banal & consists of nothing but characters spamming rote-repettive patterns.
S/SF4 is for the fanboy/graphics whore/casual generation of gamers. If the Wii-ification of the already easy command inputs isn't confirmation enough then u should try some SNK games circa '95.
@Sablicious Sorry, ST ended up as Super Sagat Fireball Fighters-can-try-going-around-but-end-up-getting-standing-roundhouse'd. It's all love, but if that's not spamming, I dont even. I'll admit I've started playing 2d fighters with SF4, and I don't mind that much, because days of netplay help me improve much quicker than I would ever have in months of arcade dwelling.
I also have Garou: Mark Of The Wolves, NeoGeo Battle Colliseum, KOF '99, I know what you mean..
You have to be really careful about negative edge sometimes, because well, sometimes a move you DON'T want to come out will.
Example: Sakura hit confirm into DP is c.lk, c.lp, c.mk, DP. If you negative edge the mk as you buffer in the DP for cancel, otoshi will come out, which is probably very very bad in most cases.
Also, too lazy to confirm this atm, but Guile's Ultra can also be shortcutted with (charge) db, uf, db uf + 3K afaik, which may be easier for some people.
@tehcatakai yeah i second that mate, a zoning tutorial would be fab as it would help everyone. Daigo's zoning game is the best i have seen its almost like he controls the whole match just by awesome zoning. He punishes missed pokes and is always anti airing but i know zoning is more than punishing pokes and anti airing.
@sngoku The majority of street fighter games are all arcade ports onto console. The arcade was around a long time before Super Nintendo. Street Fighter 4 came out in the arcade first.
@VesperArcade U said, Street Fighter 4 came out in the arcade first. Which it did. Which is no different than the way it was done for the Super Nintendo release. Arcade into SNES. Thus there is STILL no REAL reason why Shortcuts were NEEDED! TvC did NOT have shortcuts and look at all of the control schemes for that system!
@sngoku No different... except that fact that arcade is joystick. Not pad. TvC was also made for pad in mind, by reducing the classic 6 attack scheme. Because of the Wii controller scheme.
@DaDoppen THAT sounds like a guess! Considering that they didnt CARE about the many playing TvC on the Wii with its ton of control-schemes with no shortcuts! No response?
@sngoku They didn't care about it in TvC cuz TvC was originally not intended for the US. I don't think they worry about new people to an SF game too much in Japan. And there may not be shortcuts in the game, but there is definitely leniency.
@sngoku 1 more, they wanted to attract a lot of new fans to SFIV and by making the controls easier they succeeded. The game runs way better on a controller than any fighter I've played, trying to get moves to come out on a controller in KoF98 is a huge pain in the ass. TvC on the other hand is (obviously) a game that was more for the people that are already into SF games so they know how the moves are done.
@VesperArcade ZUP DUDE! i sniff hot chiks used dirty panties from brazil japan puertorico australia england italy and of course spain... thanks nice tutorial
@sngoku Previously games were not optimized to play well on a console and were made to be played on a stick. They ported the games to consoles which worked but not as well. With SFIV they were worried about losing money and there has been a huge 'casual gaming' movement since the current gen consoles. They optimized not just cuz of controllers but because they wanted new players. For a person that has no idea how to do a DP, asking them to do one in SF3 or god forbid MvC2 simply wouldn't happen.
@sngoku There is a "REAL" reason why shortcuts are needed in S/SF4 - the game is now geared towards casuals, not the hardcore.
Once this fact is accepted and digested, every retarded direction the franchise has taken since 'IV' and wil take in the future will be quite understandable.
you dont seem to understand the difference between todays controllers and gamepads. todays games (since ps1, n64, and saturn) are based around analog sticks. which is what shortcuts are for. dpads today tend to be leaning toward floating disc style dpads. old controllers came in 2 varieties 4way(nes) and 8way(genesis). new 360 controllers can switch from disc to 4way. and you can buy 30$ fightpads(madkatz) that can use all 3 via a locking switch.
youll occasionally see controllers (such as the wii classic controller and 3rd party controllers) that mimic the 8way dpad by puting an octagon on the analog stick rather than the 360/ps3 analog.
I learned about negative edge on my own by accident. Going through Cody's trials where you'd need to in order to get off certain moves. never knew it had a name --_-- Also, since i am a Claw user, these shortcuts are always there...i didn't realize I have been using shortcuts. I play on a controller.
just read about negative edge yesterday in the SF4 Prima Guide. good stuff Vesper. Although the SRK shortcut also messes up my Ryu's Super/Ultra motion sometimes....any suggestion on how to fix my movement inputs?
Vesper, thanks for these videos. They've helped me out a lot. I've been saving for a tournament fight stick. I have a question though:
Will this fight stick be compatible with other fighting games? I'm a fighting game junkie, so I tend to play many of them at once, for instance, Tekken 6 and Blazblue atm. Thanks :D
@SealsAndLions Well excuse me, princess. I only watched what I felt I needed work on. I watched the first parts about the fight stick, only enough to know I wanted one. No need to be a jerk about it.
@goldraine If you don't even know if a joystick can be used to play multiple fighting games then you should watch the entire tutorial. I mean, seriously, it's like asking if a limited edition halo controller works for call of duty, it's common sense.

Chowdizzle 1 year ago
@sngoku 1 more, they wanted to attract a lot of new fans to SFIV and by making the controls easier they succeeded. The game runs way better on a controller than any fighter I've played, trying to get moves to come out on a controller in KoF98 is a huge pain in the ass. TvC on the other hand is (obviously) a game that was more for the people that are already into SF games so they know how the moves are done.

@sngoku Eh, you think someone have an answer that isn't a guess? If you want a definite answer, you have to ask capcom...

Chowdizzle 1 year ago
@sngoku There is a "REAL" reason why shortcuts are needed in S/SF4 - the game is now geared towards casuals, not the hardcore.
Once this fact is accepted and digested, every retarded direction the franchise has taken since 'IV' and wil take in the future will be quite understandable.

@VesperArcade i love it when people try to get a point across when they don't have the facts down.

@sngoku
you dont seem to understand the difference between todays controllers and gamepads. todays games (since ps1, n64, and saturn) are based around analog sticks. which is what shortcuts are for. dpads today tend to be leaning toward floating disc style dpads. old controllers came in 2 varieties 4way(nes) and 8way(genesis). new 360 controllers can switch from disc to 4way. and you can buy 30$ fightpads(madkatz) that can use all 3 via a locking switch.
aloehart199 1 year ago
@sngoku
youll occasionally see controllers (such as the wii classic controller and 3rd party controllers) that mimic the 8way dpad by puting an octagon on the analog stick rather than the 360/ps3 analog.

Delc0 1 year ago
Wow, I had no idea you could do any of that. These tutorials are awesome Vesper. Thanks.

Thanks :D
goldraine 1 year ago
@goldraine If you would have watched his entire tutorial you would know the answer to that question.
SealsAndLions 1 year ago
@SealsAndLions Well excuse me, princess. I only watched what I felt I needed work on. I watched the first parts about the fight stick, only enough to know I wanted one. No need to be a jerk about it.
goldraine 1 year ago
@goldraine If you don't even know if a joystick can be used to play multiple fighting games then you should watch the entire tutorial. I mean, seriously, it's like asking if a limited edition halo controller works for call of duty, it's common sense.

Vesper do you use shortcuts while playing?
firetrainer 1 year ago
@firetrainer No I don't. I get too mixed up with all the fighting games because these only work with ssf4.
