The sound quality is so much richer in this older version of the fanfare that the newer ones I see in theaters. What is the difference, is it the orchestration or what?
"The King & I", while shot in 55mm, was reduction printed to standard 35mm CinemaScope and released that way. They could say 55, but it was 35. So was "Carousel." No film was ever released by 20th Century Fox in the 55mm format and no commercial prints exist. Grandeur 70 was actually used by Fox for a few films and newsreels in the 1930's. Back then, it was actually shot and released on 70mm. 55mm to 70mm is actually an optical reduction and the quality suffers.
Alfred Newman's "Fox Fanfare" was initially extended to include the CinemaScope title card in 1954. "CinemaScope 55" was a short-lived process that allowed a slightly wider image to be printed and shown on 55mm film.

"The King and I" was also presented in GRANDEUR 70, which was basically "blowing-up" a CinemaScope 55 negative onto a 70mm print.

Early 80's to early 90's: SF Giants home runs hit at Candlestick Park were accompanied by this fanfare. :D

@fromthesidelines The 'extended' theme would return in 1977 for 'Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope'. The fanfare is also found in the soundtrack.
