European don't intervene because in many cases they don't have military power to intervene. it is dressed up as "antiwar" but western europe is simply not a major player. its been occupied by the US for 50 years, kicked out of its colonies, and demographically is dying. The EU still is the largest single market in the world, uses over twice of what China uses on defense (or roughly half of what the States use), is the largest exporter of goods in the world. The reason you want to now ask why the EU doesn't intervene (even with talks of a rapid deployment army for the EU) is that 27 states usually never have the same opinion about something and because politicians are afraid of the large anti war crowd in their electorate.

Hi holzpusher, I worry that our politcal class is constantanly searching for enemies and problems. I also worry that they say we won't get into a war and then get into one. I found the balkins during the 90's very dangerous for example.
There is a really good book by Charlmers Johnsen called blowback. America's political class did not demliterize at the end of the cold war. I guess I look at American history and I see the political/financial elite constantly trying to get the US public into wars the public does not want to be involved in. An example is WW1. The fact that the Americans had to be lied to in order to do what I think should have been done a long time ago given the weight of previous mistakes committed by the U.S in the region, is not a compliment to the people or the State. We Europeans on the other hand are even harder to persuade to start an intervention so I guess I shouldn't complain.
The bigger problem than lying I think was the incompetent way in which the post war Iraq was and is being managed.

European don't intervene because in many cases they don't have military power to intervene. it is dressed up as "antiwar" but western europe is simply not a major player. its been occupied by the US for 50 years, kicked out of its colonies, and demographically is dying. The EU still is the largest single market in the world, uses over twice of what China uses on defense (or roughly half of what the States use), is the largest exporter of goods in the world. The reason you want to now ask why the EU doesn't intervene (even with talks of a rapid deployment army for the EU) is that 27 states usually never have the same opinion about something and because politicians are afraid of the large anti war crowd in their electorate.

So you agree to my initial explanation that the Europeans lack the political will to intervene which is made worse by the amount of problems in decision making within the Union. Much of it has to do with the wars we have brought on the world and another great deal of it comes from a semi pacifistic electorate that likes war about as much as a polar bear likes the Caribbean.
The French are the exception. They intervene all the time in former colonies of theirs but they do it on their own.

First the Germanic and Gallic tribes against the Romans, the Greeks did more damage in the Middle East and Balkan, the Crusades, the Catholics vs the Protestants, the Inquisition, the Napoleontic wars, the First and Second World War, the 30 Years war, colonial wars, slave trade....
2000 Years of incessant violence may have taught us to be less cocky and gung-ho than the US. Look at Iraq. Great Job!

that implies that the "herd" can know that population has increased too much, or that it has evolved to create people with homicidal tendencies on purpose. if the latter was correct then the hypothesis that 'homicide is a population regulating mechanism in society' would require that society (with a collective consciousness) knows when population is too high (how does society decide such limits?) and how much homicide is required to reduce population levels. not likely.

There is a really good book by Charlmers Johnsen called blowback. America's political class did not demliterize at the end of the cold war. I guess I look at American history and I see the political/financial elite constantly trying to get the US public into wars the public does not want to be involved in. An example is WW1. Wilson campiagned on the slogan "he kept us out of the war" but then promptly got us into the war.

Hey we're not as far apart on this topic as I thought! Personally I think the US should have reduced the military after WWII, let alone after the cold war. Clever trick to change the name from War Dept to Defense Dept, because a country always needs defense, right? Guarantees multi billions in income indefinitely. I live in Europe at the moment and whenever anyone asks me to explain the US for them, I simply say we ALWAYS need an enemy. I one disappears, watch out ... we might choose you next!

Fellow Americans we did not get into WW2 on the basis that Jews in Europe were being persecuted. That had sadly being going on for quite a few years before Hitler. It is very unfortunate that a minority is persecuted, but we should not go to war because other societies engage in wrong behavior. Instead we should try and better our own society and be an example.

I wanted to point out that people do not choose where they are born, and that government's often act against the will of the people. I feel that it is a mistake to assume that citizens and governments are the same thing.

All countries do these things (relief work, etc.) to the extent of their abilities. Actually, US foreign aid is, per capita, not larger than most other industrialized nations.
It is, however, only the US that has brought death upon millions. Yes, millions were killed in Asia and Africa, and smaller numbers in South & Central America, as a result of American military intervention and support for brutal dictators.

Is the US not the biggest cause of suffering in the world? What about the Nazis? Well, the Nazis, the Soviets, & Genghis Khan are not existing polities.
Yet, the number of people killed abroad due to US policies rivals the numbers killed by the Soviets. Domestically, the US had a more humane system than the Soviets (even despite segregation of blacks, etc). But outside its borders, it acted just as brutally & cruelly as the Soviets, and created just as much death & suffering, if not more.
