haha, when the ball goes to Stallone on the penalty the trajectory is ascending, on the close up as he grabs it it's descending, like they gently dropped it on his hands lol
the team line-ups like an acid trip lol "yeh man like ozzy ardiles, john wark and russell osman hooked up with bobby moore, pele and michael caine, it was like wow man" "oh and who was in goal?" "rocky man rocky was in goal maann" haha too surreal but great stuff
sorry my bad were actually re enacting it to raise funds for the poppy appeal :D all public welcome. its at colchesterunited stadium on the 5th or 6th june.
Something similar actually happened in Berlin 1936 Olympic games.
Peru beat Austria 4-2, 3 Peruvian goals were already nullified. Hours later Hitler demanded a rematch because of the bad conditions of the field (???) and because Peruvian fans stormed the field (yeah, how many Peruvians could you find in Nazi Germany at that time?). Peru decided to retire from the Games after the IOC accepted to hold a rematch.
I saw this movie when it came out in 1981 but haven't seen it since. I did not remember at the time that the German captain, the one who took the penalty kick was in fact Pele's former Cosmos teammate Werner Roth
@pbrick6301 oh c'mon you jackass, are you really talking about what happened in a movie???? Come on!! You must be the guy who didn't see Lampard's gol against Gemany in South Africa 2010....
@pbrick6301 Considering the absolute disgraceful performance of the referees in the last couple of soccer world cups that aint something to be proud of, if its true. Graduate from the Graham Poll school for soccer umpires did we ?
This was the greatest football movies back in the 80s. As little kids we were absolutely inspired by this movie to play football at the highest level.
It's actually not that bad of a film; although, have you ever noticed that Colby and the prisoners make a big deal of having the Eastern Europeans on the team and playing for them, but they're in about three nano-seconds of the film?
@Eyegore560 it was probably used as historical filler to keep the audience's attention.Of course there were great Eastern European players around and maybe they faced a horrible fate in the Nazi camps. I guess the filmakers wanted to focus on that fact as well.
I think the idea of the Nazi applauding Pele's goal is basically to show that even if the opposing team do something quite incredible and brilliant, any fan of football can appreciate it.
If you look at any player who has an awesome game or scores a hat-trick or something, the opposition will more often than not, applaud that p[layer.
Blocking a penalty is always worth merit. Look at Iker Casillas save against Getafe in the 2008/2009 season, prolly the easiest penalty Ive ever seen saved and yet Real Madrid fans exploded. Why? Because no matter how easy, 90% of penalties go in and saving one is saving the game
I would love to see a remake of this movie with Oliver Kahn and Michael Ballack on the German side, Romario/or Ronaldo, Riquelme, Zidane, Shearer, and Shay Given on the Allied side with Stallone making some form of a Cameo, maybe as someone in the stands or the prisoner who gets shot in the opening scene.....
Does it really matter how hard it was to save the goal? It was an entertaining movie and nobody cares about your comments. In 30 years this movie will still be a classic and in 30 seconds no one will give a crap about your criticism. It's rather apparent that you're wanting the world to be aware that when you were 8 years old you played goalie once.
This film gets alot of stick critically but I love it a good feelgood film. It is basically a footy version of the great escape. I never thought I ever see a Geraman missing a penalty lol
what brought goospimples to my skin , instead, was the german nazist kapo standing up to applaude to Allie's last bycicle kick goal, among all other nazists staring at him, lutonmale :))...it's a great shot
lol- he looks like a real fooball conniseur. I have to admit it was fantastic to see his delight and marvel at great football and visible escaping of the allies as he chortles to himself. In a way it humanises some of those who were forced to serve under the Nazis.
It was a collective voice of defiance against the tyranny of the Nazi regime. However, saying that half of that crowd were probably Vichy collaberators!!
Of course not. But in 1981 nobody knew who Beckam actually was, and as you'll probably know, we didn't have the tecnology we have nowadays. Got what I mean ?
this is actually based on a true story, what happens is that the guy who sylvester plays finds a bazooka under the turf and blows all the nazis away, something that you wont find in most history books, but completly true folks.
Responding to Leprechaunsquad, this is only a movie, but we have to say that the creators of this movie were very clever to put everything according with that time, and here is a question,What is an american footbal player doing here?but, exceptional role made by stallone just doing like a goaly and yes..Brasil participated in ww2 even Mexico andmore countries that I can mentioned but you only asked for Brasil and don't forget Ardiles He is originaly from Argentina acting maybe as europeanprisioner.
A lot of Americans came over, joined the British forces, and fought for us before the USA officially came into the war. They would normally have a patch on their uniform showing the stars and stripes. I hope this helps.
decide ah no lads we can win this score 4 goals miracleously then a german yes a german in a german warfilm so is of course stereotypically hard, confident, efficient but no they decide to let the babyface messy haired shit in the pants player hit the deciding penalty which turns out to be the worst penalty of all time in fact is so bad that the worst dive of all time is good enough to comfortably CATCH the ball a german penalty taker oh lord everything right yeah
right i havent seen this movie in years so someone correct me if i get any of this wrong
the german national side decide to play a team of players made up of concentration camp or pow camps Somthing like that they get some polish lads who are so unfit they can barely stand they get a brazillian??? dont remember them being in a war then its hosted in an allie venue with what looks like average security for any game go 4-0 down at half-time against a match fixing ref have a chance of escaping
