WOOOOWWWW!!! You just blew my mind today! That's incredible, I thought it was just John K exploiting his crazy mind but now I learn that he just put together non related things that Burl Ives said in the past to make it sound neurotic and insane.
Wow. This whole time I thought Stinky was supposed to be a nightmare version of Raffi, folksy childrens' artist extraordinaire, but with extra creepy lines.
@DinosaurCop: According to the DVD commentary of "Stimpy's Invention," John K. stated that they tried to get Burl Ives himself to perform the Happy Happy Joy song, but somehow no one could track him down. Too bad!
great video! I don;t know if anyone mentioned this, but in the original script for the episode, it actually mentioned Burl Ives by name. John K just improvised the name Stinky Whizzleteats during recording. Or so the story goes, anyways
@DinosaurCop Eh.. Ives actually lived the last few months of his live in my hometown... My mother's friend was actually his nurse.. You learn something new every day.
Pay attention to scenes where the sun itself has a face. Seems to have a similarity to Burl Ives, both in that bright grin and Van Dyke-inspired beard.
This can be observed at the best of similarity in the episode "Rubber Nipple Salesmen" where Stimpy orates his speech on distributing rubber nipples to everyone, the sun shining down on him with a winking grin.
I guess Kricfalusi and the crew at Spümco had a liking for the guy...!
According to the commentary, they actually tried to get Ives himself, but the one phone number they keep using to call him never picked up, so it's John K. as Stinky to make that up (and I think it's John as Stinky too in "Son and Stimpy"). Once John was gone, Bob Camp took over as the voice, eventually doing his own version.
Really when I think of the name Burl Ives, I'll always first remember a snowman wearing a mustache and a plaid vest! Excellent memory from childhood but once I saw the real Burl a few years after the snowman I couldn't help but wonder why they made the snowman look so specifically Asian. It was his eyes that did it, they were always on a slant and like slivers. Hey AdamLore you know anywhere on the 'net to find the R & S episode "Pixie King"? Top 10 R & S and I don't know where to find it.
Thanks, AdamLore . @ 2:41 Burl Ives does a script reading for the next "Ace Ventura" movie for a recurring-role cameo appearance as a UPS man. ( I know he's deceased, just thinking about a humorous 'what if'.) Ok love ya' buh-bye!
@AdamLore There is none. Cobain wrote lyrics for a song, but never discussed recording because whoever was in charge thought he was just another fan who watched the show, and threw the lyrics out! Nothing was said about wether or not they were recovered, but no, there is no actual song.

i loved ren and stimpy, still do. wasn`t it stinky weasel-teats though? i always thought it was. weasels` having teats, that stink. speaking of which, son of stimpy is my fave episode.
And you even have the original where Ren hitting his head with the hammer, all the sound effects in there! Well done, tyvm! I remember renting Burl Ives movies looking for some of the quotes,. ><
I love how they took the most RANDOM person they could, then took RANDOM lines from the most RANDOM person's work, then compiled it into the best song of all time, Happy Happy Joy Joy.
@terorvlad actually cartoons like looney Tunes Tex Avery and other MGM gems were initially intended for adults. ( watch some of the old WWII propaganda films from that studio and you'll see what I mean. They didn't become a kid's thing until the late 50s. And Ren and Stimpy is hardly a kid's cartoon. Just watch APC and you'll get it.
