This version and Dame Janet's are excellent, however all these and similar have been completely eclipsed by the Live recordings in the 2008 season of Vivica Genaux....her general interpretation and off the earthly scale of her daCapo simply put the Transcendent Joy of Handel at a wholly different level...probably the best with an actually bad recording is here: /watch?v=BRk-TbaXTQA from 4:30 is beyond any existing recording : even Joyce DiDonato's red dress recording...the current best...
@bf2019 That depends on how you perceive Baroque music. I much prefer von Otter's interpretation exactly because it lacks the transcendental element in it. Baroque music is not about showing off but subjecting oneself completely to a universal communicative language (doctrine of affections) so that the emotions are conveyed to the listener in their purest form and stripped from any subjective colouring.
......no words......The best studio version I know, by a contemporary singer. I like DI DONATO and GRAHAM too, but this terrific duo, VON OTTER - MINKOWSKI, is really wonderful. All is perfect !
I absolutely agree. Listening to Christofellis was unbearable. But this version revives the beauty of the aria. A.S. von Otter did Ariodante in Paris, is there anybody who has the live recording? I would pay any price to have it.
I am sorry, I did not express myself correctly: when I said that the Christofellis version had "ruined" my ears for others, I meant it in praise; Christofellis delivers this aria with such a clean voice, effortlessly, wonderfully; so I have it as a standard for comparison. But Von Otter is wonderful singer.
Madam, I apologize for my comment. It was impulsive on my part. Now I realize the underlying meaning of your statement, a very subtle way to put it. I stand corrected. Indeed Christofellis' rendition is crystal clear, however, for an aria like Dopo Notte, I prefer more colour and emotion when singing it.
A very dynamic and exciting aria, a favorite of mine. To the educated ear, however, it is peculiar to hear a 20th-century-style voice and technique singing an 18th-century aria that demands a totally different sound and technique.
I made a miscellaneous CD a couple years ago, and it started with this aria; try driving your car on the highway with Von Otter singing: forget Meatloaf, Anne Sofie is the real thing. The ornamentation, as I had understood it, was suggested by Minkowski. Anybody know better?

Unfortunately Ariodante is not often performed. You have to do some travelling. Since I bought Ariodante I am a real Händel addict

very good... she does not make the breaks so evident, like others... I think that shows all the respect she has for the aria.
Then again, Christofellis version "ruined" my ears for others.. but this is very good indeed.

You have my FULL support Elizabethvonlussen, Chr.'s version IS unbearable, I cannot even imagine somebody not being shocked by it.
Whereas Anne Sofie does a great job here.

Anne Sophie's coloratura is very good. I have not heard A. S. von Otter singing this kind of aria yet. Excelent.
