WHO KNEW? According to Keith Richards' book "Life", Bill Wyman was just in the band at first for his amp; Charlie Watts was the drummer they couldn’t afford because he was making real money at paying gigs; after awhile Brian Jones was a starstruck, whining, pain-in-the-ass; Mick Taylor was an enigma; and Ron Woods has a rehab habit, Mick Jagger is an insecure, power hungry frontman who also solely wrote some of the Stones’ best songs e.g., ‘Brown Sugar’ and ‘When The Whip Comes Down’.
Germain Greer, writing for Oz way back yon, said that while The Deviants had a revolutionary message, Mick Jagger was far more capable than Mick Farren of motivating young people to get up and do something. It's all in the hip movement. Still, Mick Farren did a much better cover of Summertime Blues, so I guess that makes them even.
Their music started as a gruffer, faster version of Chicago blues, but eventually the Stones pioneered British rock's tone of ironic detachment and wrote about offhand brutality, sex as power, and other taboos..
After the Seventies, the Stones lost their dangerous aura, but it didn't hurt their popularity: They've become icons of an elegantly debauched, world-weary decadence, elder statesmen..
Shit I was a dj in Helsinki Running the no1 night club that time and this is the sound I like because its real from the heart like honky tonk women, brown sugar and so on.Todays shit never reaches these champions, because you need heart.heart.heart..and these boys got it,my group g-stones revival has heart but not like these boys..keep on rocking guys.
Cool died with the 1970's. Stones are incredible. Check out the backward moves of the window washer who displays early inspiration for the moonwalk. I miss the character U.S. cars had in the 60's/70's before all cars looked alike. Shooting in black & white works well here. Awesomeness of music speaks for itself.
Those windshield washers are annoying, ain't they? David Letterman joked recently that he removed his windscreen to solve the problem. Mick Jagger has the best HELMET hair ever, bar none! hahaha
To me you can rename Exile to The Stones greatest hits. I can't get no satisfaction till Rocks off, Lovin Cup, Torn n frayed, Sweet Virginia. Almost 40 years later and still blows the heck out of anything that would be on mtv if it was relevant anymore.
Rock 'n' Roll as God intended it to be played- just get a hot chick dancing with/for you, a fat joint, a cold beer & you're in God's rock 'n' roll Heaven (or at least Heaven as created by Mick & Keef!)
Never knew the song was about shooting dope, plug in flush out and fire the fuckin feed ? What does that mean.Ha ! 1,34 into the song. One of my favorites, anybody else?
Anytime I hear Chawlie (aka "The Basher) setting the timing with his beat to a heart pumping Rolling Stones song like this one it just knocks me out every fuckin time. I never tire of listening to him bash on his kit. The most stoic faced drummer in the business.
pure dirty rock n roll.all the boys on top form here and criminally underplayed on corporate fm radio."exile...." should be on the curriculum of every school on the planet.
@Apanzon no doubt a great song but thr best cut on this album is let it loose...but anyway exile is not a song album...the whole is greater than its parts, a true masterpiece the greatest rock album of all time
This song THRILLS me EVERY TIME. I've heard it thousands of times now...thousands of GOOD TIMES. THRILLED. Every time. It RISES AND SUBSIDES, AND RISES AND SUBSIDES. Well...I'm drinking, ha, ha. Check my channel for some good raw blues btw...
I had backstage passes at Madison Square Garden for this tour, and Mick's 30th Birthday. (My girlfriend was the EventsVP Asst.) and it was a hell of a show. The horns, the horns... This song and Sweet Virginia were made for that concert.
Had a great Stones year in Ottawa and Toronto 2008. In Ottawa, my girlfriend insisted we wait outside the fair ground...low and behold, after the show the limos started roll right beside us. Missed Mick and Keith rolled past in thier tank Escalade but Ronnie in standard Cad had the window open so did high fives. Followed the show to Toronto, people singing in the streets. Also saw the filming of Streets of Love vid..what a year!
Today is Mick Jaggers birthday and because of that we’re marking the DVD set, “Ladies and Gentlemen… The Rolling Stones” 58% off! The offer is only good for today at dailydeals.target dot com/?ref=tgt_email_rdad2010. Brought to you by Eagle Rock Entertainment. Happy 68th Mick.
