i think jimmy could be a girl but her voice is just too...sweet...its gotta have emotion and passion and some kind of actual ANGER. not the right girl if it were to be a girl. but no one beats billie

I just....I can see why they did it....for the shock value....and to do something different....and draw in ticket sales.....but in context of the play as I have come to know and love it....it just doesn't make sense. :o/

St. Jimmy isn't even a real character, so it's not really outlandish that a woman could take over. She sounds decent.

And I think she just kept her shirt on for the shirtless part. Same otherwise.

@TheSimpsonsFanGirl I saw Davey on his first night. I honestly thought he did really great in the role. I am already a AFI fan so naturally I have a liking to Davey's vocals, but with all that aside, I love Broadway, and even if I had not known who Davey was, I would have still walked out of that theatre impressed. The one and only, lol......In addition to my last post, I think every actor brings a little something different to their roles, I thought she did a good job as St. Jimmy, I got use to her vocals, at first it kind of threw me off, but I think a female could play the role just as well as a guy, just the vocals need to be strong enough. Tonys "st jimmy" was excellent, and of course Billie Joe's was awesome, but I still enjoyed Davey in the role the most. :)

Tony Vincent was the best St. Jimmy. sorry, even Billie Joe wasn't better than Tony. Tony rocks... he's the only one right actor for St. Jimmy's part.

After seeing Tony Vincent on Broadway (who is just FANTASTIC at the role), and some having the nostalgia of seeing Billie Joe (which would be awesome, but TV is just better at the role on Broadway) - Ethridge as St. Jimmy is just a rip off to those seeing the show.

Personally I'm not a fan of this version. I have always been a huge Green Day fan and was skeptical when I heard St. Jimmy was going to be played by a woman. I don't think its so much her gender that is throwing me off here, but more the lack of energy and intensity that she is bringing to the song. St Jimmy needs to be loud, angry, and crazy. I think Tony Vincent and, of course, Billie Joe do great with that but I don't hear it here. She has a great voice, but just doesn't fit the character.

I need a video of this and to see how the other songs that are mainly St. Jimmy's went to make a final judgement, but the way I see it is - Melissa Etheridge has a great voice, that's undeniable. However, she just doesn't fit correctly. BJA and Tony Vincent both had a dark, demonic, crazy aspect to their voices where it made the audience believe that they believed in the character/that they are the character. I feel like this is just Melissa singing the song. But I'll be sure once there's video.

@xstrwbryflds4 She took of her leather jacket and had on a black shirt which already had the heart on it. So when Johnny was makeing his heart she was just mimiking Johnny. She was great last night, but I felt like she wasn't right for St. Jimmy. Maybe Whatsername but she isn't in her 20's I believe. She was still good anyway.

Her voice is ok, but it doesn't fit, she sounds like an old opera singer in here, not a tortured soul giving up on existence... Billie plays this role better than anyone, he sounds tortured, he sounds crazy, dark, like when he sings "Jimmy died today, he blew his brains out into the bay" he almost sounds like he's just gonna fall on his knees and bust out crying, he's almost living the role when he plays it, from this it just sounds like she's singing...

@dieintradegy billie joe created the st. jimmy character as an anti-johnny. evil and full of bad influences. gender not implied. so if you're bad ass, you can play st. jimmy. the only part that doesn't work for when a woman plays st. jimmy is when johnny and st. jimmy are drawing the upside down cross and heart on their chest. billie obviously approved melissa's involvement because apparently she's a huge fan of the show.
