Well the camps were mostly run by the SS and any German person that hadn't been living under a rock knew about the all the persecution and large scale detention of political dissenters and various minority groups. Even the most apolitical and apthetic German must have had some idea about what was going down even if he didn't know exactly what was happening in the camps.
The Nuremberg trials also made it pretty clear that "just following orders" isn't any defense at all.
