Not sure, but i think coz styrofoam, as the name suggests, was actually foam before it was formed into a cup n stiffened, the little bit of water in the cooker is just not to burn the pot, also create steam, and as the pressure increases, the cup gets compressed evenly from all sides, expelling the all the air from the cup.

So the cut section of the cup should be a bit harder, thinner and dense. ^^

The pressure inside the pot compressed the styrofoam. It seems there is a lot of air inside styrofoam, sort of like white bread. Gee, since styrofoam normally floats, after it's compressed does it mean you CAN take this cup scuba diving?

The water turned into vapor, which makes it expand about 17 000 times, which in turn causes the pressure inside the cooker to rise. That's the reason why the cup shrunk; you can obtain the same effect by lowering it about 600 meters under water ;D
