  • Wow that's a wonderful thing to have a legend like bob babbitt to be your mentor. sounding good. i play bass also, and i would love to study under bob. thanks for posting.

  • I'd like to play together. With my fretless.

  • Bob Babbitt is not under rated! Maybe for your generation? BB is very unique in a world of mostly black musicians doing this kind of music, plus he is world renowned for his playing ability.

I can't say enough good things about this very talented Bassist.

Long live "Funk Brother" Bob Babbitt ...

  • I'm always blown away by the way Bob lets those long notes hang until EXACTLY the right moment, then cuts them off! Sooo good.

  • LOVE THOSE OLD MOTOWN BASS LINES, GREAT JOB !!!!!!!

  • JAMERSON, DUNN, BABBITT THE 3 GREATEST BASS PLAYERS EVER

  • I don't know who is luckier Bob or Jonette!!! :) You are both awesome! it was a joy to watch this!

  • Babbit, love your work on Alice Cooper's record! Jonette, that bass you're playin is SWEEEEET! thanks for sharing your music

  • What amp are you using?

  • EXCELLENT!

  • It's been a while since I tuned in to watch.

I still cannot get over the groove on this spot.

Anyone who wonders if she can play needs to determine what they know first. If she couldn't, do you think the King would be wasting his time?

She is awesome. Understated and on the mark.

I don't care if she plays 1 finger, ala jamerson, or with a pick like McCartney and others, or two fingers or more. Close your eyes, and there's no way to tell.

Now where can I see you live.

    That would be a treat.

  • What a great lesson in groove and sound. This video says it all. Bob, you're such an inspiration!

  • hey peeps, i'm a total jamerson fanatic & disciple, but bob babbit played bass on this and several other of stevie's tunes. ask stevie, and he'll tell you.

  • and bob played bass on a lot of gladys knight songs and marvin gaye songs.

  • Funk Brother James Jamerson is #1 without any doubt. Ask any Bass player they'll tell ya.

  • but funk brother bob babbitt is a close second.

  • Jaco Pastorius is the god of bass, and if you don't agreee listen one song. or see a clip...

  • Excellent, Bob is the master on the bass. 5 BY 5

  • no james jamerson was

  • my son actually had the nerve to ask me who the old white guy was. after i threatened to kill him, i explained....

  • Wow! That is mind-blowing to see that. I am glad to see all the detail and how it is played. This may one of the most importartant music history videos ever,

  • Bob is an INCREDIBLE guy, let alone bassist.

    Lucky lady!!!

  • I want this woman

    hot on all counts!

    call me!

  • 5 stars. You go girl!

  • try to get bob to show you midnight train......its a great line and a classic song.....

  • it is such a shame how berry gordy treated the funk brothers. he wouldn't have been a millionaire without them.

  • I was invited by Fender next week for Fender Bash tour in CA and Mexico and they told me today that Bob Babbitt will be part of that week with us!!! a very underated legend on bass.

  • Somewhere above...James Jamerson smiles. Great work and tell Bob we love him.

  • Hell yeah she can play her ass off, who is she?

  • it doesn't get much better than playing WITH BOB BABBITT!!! long live the Funk Brothers

  • Superb bass playing....Jonette's the best, her grooves swing. Methinks we're looking at the next Carol Kaye. Nice fat sound, deep pocket, really moves the song along. She has learned probably the most important lesson of bass playing - that the best grooves aren't overplayed...that by a series or broken notes and rests, the groove breathes. These days, this is a lost art in bass playing, but thanks be, Jonette has it. Don't stop! Every drummer will be standing in line to play with you.

  • Let's not forget Wilton Felder, who played on so many sessions in Mo-West.

  • absolutely amazing!!! legendary!!! and inspirational!!

  • Bob's basslines are immortal! :P

  • Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great video!

Jonette you are a great player but I love when Bob comes in because you can really tell a master is playing. He really has an amazing touch on the instrument.

  • Yeaaaaaa!!

  • This is for all you supremist Bob listened to Paul Chambers he was the original inspiration for him and Jamerson. The so call pop thing was created out of necessity to compensate for a lack of drums for the back beat. My point is that it all comes from us as a people there is no separation in music it is expression that comes from the soul.

  • paul chambers heavy duty bass player

  • Jamerson would listen constantly to Oscar Peterson (with Ray Brown) at home too.

  • lol.

  • didnt know the Pop Slap thing was a "black thing" no wonder I sound bland, I am not using my blackness yet... lol I understand what you mean, I just picked up a bass and find that the FUNK and GROOVE comes not from what you play but HOW you play it. keep playing, sounds good. Its hard not to want to get a little funky when playing a bass, I had assumed ;)

  • what's with the black bit ? colour has nothing to do with it.

  • white les claypool slaps it "like a black man" hahaha

  • My father was a bass player from that era....Played with some of the samepeople as Bob did, awesome to see him teaching, I may have to get in touch with him for some lessons....

  • ...bob babbitt.....oh my!!! learn from this cat as much as you can...he is a legend!!!

  • thats my grandpa! no joke.

i love him so much and hes such an inspiration to me. my mom told me to youtube him and i had no idea he would even know what youtube was haha.

  • Hey Jonette you went straight to the top, good work! You have a good future in bass playing and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as the rest of us but keep at it not like me and let life get in the way and then go back after 34 years.

  • OH jeezzz!!! iTS BABBIT!!!!! One of the funkiest borthers alive black or white

  • Fantastic !!!!!

  • Good playing especially since you seem to use your THUMB for RH execution. Interesting! You are NO Carol Kaye (and that is a GOOD thing)...

  • I geddit...is Bob your dad? or dare I say it...grandad?

  • That is *so* cool! Can anyone get a Babbitt to come round their house and teach them genuine motown bass grooves? If so, can I have one?

  • Could not have a better teacher.Listen to what the old man says! Just kidding Bob.

  • that was a treat seeing Bob and to know he was the one playing the Bass line in Scorpio with the detroit Horns is a double treat. scorpio was played at every party in detroit. detroit love bob

  • cool

  • Wow! That's awesome. I can't believe you are playing with Babbitt! I'd love to do that! Great work on the song, too.

  • very nice playing!

What kinda bass is this? I know it's a Fender, but what one? I love the maple neck with black blocks!

  • Thanks shanmag! It's an American Jazz bass.

  • @shanmag The bass is a 1975 Fender Jazz Bass, with a maple fingerboad. The 75 Jazz came with either maple or rosewood board. Fender do a nice re-isssue so check out the Fender website.

  • @shanmag Ham fisted must have rich parents to get Bob Babbit lessons

  • Want more about Bob? then go to edu-cyberpg dot com and do a search for his name and lots will come up including a personal message to his students!!

or edu-cyberpg dot com [slash[ culdesac [slash] Stars [slash]funkbrothers dot html

    hope you enjoy it.

    Karen

  • Jonette- You are so fortunate to be learning from such a master of the bass. Savor every minute.

Bob - Byrd from Rare Earth says "hello" from Lansing. Stop on through some time if your ever in Michigan again.

  • Bob's basslines are immortal!

  • FAB!!

...hey Babbitt - keep on passin' on the passion

    much love,

    Elliott

  • Great video. Bob's an amazing player and a great guy. It's wonderful to see him passing it on.

  • Very nicely done!

  • Great video Bob & Jonette!
