Wow that's a wonderful thing to have a legend like bob babbitt to be your mentor. sounding good. i play bass also, and i would love to study under bob. thanks for posting.
Bob Babbitt is not under rated! Maybe for your generation? BB is very unique in a world of mostly black musicians doing this kind of music, plus he is world renowned for his playing ability.
I can't say enough good things about this very talented Bassist.
Anyone who wonders if she can play needs to determine what they know first. If she couldn't, do you think the King would be wasting his time?
She is awesome. Understated and on the mark.
I don't care if she plays 1 finger, ala jamerson, or with a pick like McCartney and others, or two fingers or more. Close your eyes, and there's no way to tell.
hey peeps, i'm a total jamerson fanatic & disciple, but bob babbit played bass on this and several other of stevie's tunes. ask stevie, and he'll tell you.
Wow! That is mind-blowing to see that. I am glad to see all the detail and how it is played. This may one of the most importartant music history videos ever,
I was invited by Fender next week for Fender Bash tour in CA and Mexico and they told me today that Bob Babbitt will be part of that week with us!!! a very underated legend on bass.
Superb bass playing....Jonette's the best, her grooves swing. Methinks we're looking at the next Carol Kaye. Nice fat sound, deep pocket, really moves the song along. She has learned probably the most important lesson of bass playing - that the best grooves aren't overplayed...that by a series or broken notes and rests, the groove breathes. These days, this is a lost art in bass playing, but thanks be, Jonette has it. Don't stop! Every drummer will be standing in line to play with you.
Jonette you are a great player but I love when Bob comes in because you can really tell a master is playing. He really has an amazing touch on the instrument.
This is for all you supremist Bob listened to Paul Chambers he was the original inspiration for him and Jamerson. The so call pop thing was created out of necessity to compensate for a lack of drums for the back beat. My point is that it all comes from us as a people there is no separation in music it is expression that comes from the soul.
didnt know the Pop Slap thing was a "black thing" no wonder I sound bland, I am not using my blackness yet... lol I understand what you mean, I just picked up a bass and find that the FUNK and GROOVE comes not from what you play but HOW you play it. keep playing, sounds good. Its hard not to want to get a little funky when playing a bass, I had assumed ;)
My father was a bass player from that era....Played with some of the samepeople as Bob did, awesome to see him teaching, I may have to get in touch with him for some lessons....
Hey Jonette you went straight to the top, good work! You have a good future in bass playing and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as the rest of us but keep at it not like me and let life get in the way and then go back after 34 years.
that was a treat seeing Bob and to know he was the one playing the Bass line in Scorpio with the detroit Horns is a double treat. scorpio was played at every party in detroit. detroit love bob
@shanmag The bass is a 1975 Fender Jazz Bass, with a maple fingerboad. The 75 Jazz came with either maple or rosewood board. Fender do a nice re-isssue so check out the Fender website.
Fantastic that you identify and pursue this groove.
