The movie didn't really scare me - I found it hilarious. (In a good way - they really seemed to push the 'satire' side of things.) The book seemed to be more terrifying because it was like being inside the mind of an insane person, even though it was a huge twisted satire of yuppie culture.

Whether Bateman was really a killer or not is beyond the point. The "Bateman" we see in the film is the Bateman that committed the killings. You could say that there is also a Bateman that imagined them.
