  • I had read the articles, but just now found this video! Really neat. I used to pull 45 car trains with the Mikado and the GHQ conversion. I would never have dared go to 95!

  • How did you do it? What did you start with for this hippo?

  • @xxxIronHeadxxx There is a complete 3-part article on the project in the Dec, 2007, Jan, 2008, Feb, 2008 issues of Railroad Model Craftsman. It is a Kato Mikado with a 5th set of drivers added to the frame, extended rods, a scratchbuilt tender, and a modified GHQ L1s conversion kit boiler. Thanks!

  • @mmagliaro aww I cant do any of that!!!

  • Luv them Hippos

    great looking layout

    enjoyed the video

  • Thanks! The secret to the pulling power is in the massive heavy pewter boiler from a GHQ L1s conversion kit. That kit will make a Kato Mikado pull a ton too (not 90 cars, but a lot).

  • Max,

Nice I1s ya got there. The Pulling power is amazing in itself. I just finished building one of these from a Minitrix Decapod, A Line #1225 Motor, and a NWSL #115 Timewell flywheel, and replacement pilot from a small switcher with footboard pilots. Highly impressive model.
