this was absolutely barbaric...can't believe a university will condone this rubbish. i thought there were laws against using live animals for tests. certainly, illegal to sell live fish at the market or half-alive turtles, etc. animal cruelty is outlawed for everyone else, why are quasi-scientific experiments immune... this video just makes me sick. monash should be absolutely horrified at what passes for science on their campus. the VC should resign.

ok so if today I told you that you were born to be killed by having someone rip out you throte then pour painful chemicals in you open wound and finnaly kill you, you would be ok with that? I am not trying to be mean but just look at it from the rabiits point of view ok. :)
@HorseBunny2606 wow so clueless. these rabbits are obviously anesthetized beforehand cuz u dont see them wriggling around or struggling do u?
on another note, i dont know why these people arent at farms/slaughterhouses protesting. they breed and kill animals on a much larger scale. these are just bored people who have nothing better to do with their lives than seek attention/publicity.
@yumyumintumtum Seriously though there are other methods to study animals without having to go through this. Slaughter houses are different, why? because then you are talking about people's freedom to choose what they should eat therefore you are getting human rights in it, which would take longer and cost more. They are already protesting against that though mind you, but it's an ongoing thing.
Humans like to believe we're 'sapient' and above other creatures, but we've demonstrated we're the lowest form of life. Animals mourn the loss of one of their own, making it inexcusable to use them for our own needs. Time to do a mass cull of the human species.
i cant believe you people. its not right to kill animals for human use or consumption at all. animals are being killed just for research and you think that's right? you're pathetic and heartless
People pay a lot of money to study at uni, to learn, and shouldn't have to put up with this type of shit! The girl at the start of the video looked shit scarred when you all started screaming into those microphones. again INNOCENT. You "do good" people make me sick! You've obviously never been on a farm before?? Seen an animal have its throat cut, or a chicken's head cut off. You need to get out more! Travel the world and look at the bigger picture!
I've cut up rats for uni before, we were told that they were humanly killed thou.. not sure if that is any better than cutting up live rabbits, but at least it's dead i guess. However i think i learnt heaps in that lab, i think the best way for a student to learn anatomy is by doing the experiment, in this case, you need to see the effects on the heart, i guess you have to perfome this act on a live body then.

Its not senseless - All medicine that you've taken for granted has been used on animals and performed on animals to see if humans can use it.
for instance 'panadol' - paracetamol. Was invented prior to these activists' opinions...so if you really feel so strongly then... i suggest that you dont use their products, seeing as animals were probably 'HARMED' in its making...pfft
Haha. Gosh, makes me want to go to Monash that much more. Tis fun observing deluded do gooders do good while everyone else cutting out rabbit guts do better.
All animals suffer and feel pain. I don't think you'd like to take the place of this rabbit. There's no need to do animal testing when so many other alternatives are available.
These all require(d) the use of animals. For example, computer modelling uses animal data, and cell cultures also use animal products. Human cells live in animal mediums, like bovine serum. Immunohistochemistry, for example, uses animal antibodies.
You can find animals used in most 'human' research, only they are not the subjects.
Thats Bullshit. There are no other alternatives. These idiot protesters only say shit like that in a stupid attempt to justify their little whinging session
Sorry I'm saying the protesters aren't wrong, but just to think as well, like how the Physiology department at this university will think for a brief moment and to see what they are trying to achieve.
Also, if one says to find alternate ways of testing or learning about the systems in the body, all this requires time. And this is unfortunately not always a luxury we have. People die everyday of some disease or another, and we need to find cures for them, fast. So doing such experiments is what gets answers unfortunately. And I believe as long as the rules and ethical practices are carried out, we have to be understanding to these practices. Again, I'm saying the protesters are wrong.
I understand the reasons for peoples protest, but as a Physiology student myself, the information we have gained from such experiments is what has brought us many different fascinating new advancement in the field of science and medicine. Without experiments like this (as sad as it may be), sometimes the good outweighs the bad. I adore animals, but its not like we can get anywhere in medicine without having them tested? Think about that, the next time you buy medicines.

But no, they were put under deep anesthesia, never to wake up again, much like a dissection. Read: No suffering. At least with the vivisection, the students can appreciate that what they are using is a living thing.
Though props to whoever put that pamphlet in Lot's Wife (student magazine) and all over uni about humane education alternatives. It was informative and the people who I talked to liked it, and thought it was good to let everyone know about the alternatives.
Of course I wouldn't do it on myself, I am not a rabbit in that situation. I wouldn't eat myself, milk myself and lay eggs in factory farms either. But the rabbits can't think about these sorts of things (which require awareness of self in the past, present and future) so it would not suffer as much as a human would in the same situation.
IN SUFFERING WE ARE ALL EQUAL!!! Does the fact that you cannot comprehend the suffering of others outside the confines of your own existence mean that you would suffer less than me in such a situation?
"less than me" do you think your the rabbit? and no i dont think that noone but myself suffers, hence why im going into the medical field.cant you read? but i can assure you the rabbit didn't suffer, i was watching it the whole time.
think outside the confines of your own selfish existance and consider all the people who we hope to helpin thefuture. did you know that heart attack is the biggest killer ofaustralian people each year? i hope to reduce those statistics in my life time using what im learning at uni.
In making a moral decision, an organism's interest to avoid suffering is equal, be it a plant avoiding noxious stimuli, to a human screaming in pain.
BUT the degree of suffering is not equal. A plant is not sentient, so it can't feel that pain, like a rabbit might. A rabbit does not suffer as much as a human would while living in a lab, because the human is sapient, and has sapient loved ones who also suffer, but the rabbit has no idea he is being exploited.
Though not denying the rabbits suffer (not in the context of feeling pain), it is not in their interest to die, even though they don't know about it.
The suffering is supposed to be outweighed by the benefit of teaching future researchers in the area of cardiovascular physiology, as so many humans suffer from diseases like heart attacks like Emma said. (though I don't 100% believe this class is *needed* either, which is why I said 'supposed to be')
