Slaughter houses are different, why? because then you are talking about people's freedom to choose what they should eat therefore you are getting human rights in it, which would take longer and cost more. I've cut up rats for uni before, we were told that they were humanly killed thou.. not sure if that is any better than cutting up live rabbits, but at least it's dead i guess. However i think i learnt heaps in that lab, i think the best way for a student to learn anatomy is by doing the experiment, in this case, you need to see the effects on the heart, i guess you have to perfome this act on a live body then.

Also, if one says to find alternate ways of testing or learning about the systems in the body, all this requires time. And this is unfortunately not always a luxury we have. People die everyday of some disease or another, and we need to find cures for them, fast. So doing such experiments is what gets answers unfortunately. And I believe as long as the rules and ethical practices are carried out, we have to be understanding to these practices. Again, I'm saying the protesters are wrong.

i did this practical today because like to find drugs to treat syptoms of cardiovascular diseases. can you honestly tell me that no one you know has ever had to use medication?all medication is tested on animals before it goes to market.were all at uni to go on to become doctors, researchers ect. i dont beleive in cruelty to animals and it was a hard decision for me to take part in the prac.

I am a science student and I agree, this teaching is absolutely unecessary. It' not research. It's teaching kids how to be callous and cruel. The students can watch a video instead.

As a scientist I think the problem lies in the University's poor communication in that the DVD is NOT the same as doing the prac. I have Honours & PhD students coming in to my lab having never done animal handling and they are the ones who end up stressing the animals because the animals can sense their lack of confidence. They are the ones who end up having to repeat experiments (and killing more animals as a result). I say train them well the first time around & save more animals that way.

Of course I wouldn't do it on myself, I am not a rabbit in that situation. I wouldn't eat myself, milk myself and lay eggs in factory farms either. But the rabbits can't think about these sorts of things (which require awareness of self in the past, present and future) so it would not suffer as much as a human would in the same situation.

BUT the degree of suffering is not equal. A plant is not sentient, so it can't feel that pain, like a rabbit might. A rabbit does not suffer as much as a human would while living in a lab, because the human is sapient, and has sapient loved ones who also suffer, but the rabbit has no idea he is being exploited.
